I found this hotel very relaxing, the amenties endless, and the service very good. The fitness center is very nice!! The pools and beach are awesome! I loved the pool bar. The Cigar bar is also very nice! The grounds of the Westin and Sheraton are large, well kept and beautiful. I went with my wife and two teenage daughters, with one goal in mind (this was the anti-Disney vacation): Relaxtion and we certainly did this! We all read two books, got plenty of sun, enjoyed the banana boats (stay off the front seat!), para sailing, jet skis and the pool bar (oh yeah, I already said that!) No cell phones, newspapers are all two to three days old (so we did not keep with up the outside world for one whole week!) The temps were in the 80's and so was the water in the pool and the ocean.

The Market across the street was great for eating (most breakfasts were under $7), nice seafood at night (under $20) and subway for lunch if you have to eat 3X a day. We didn't.

The rooms were pretty good size, clean, bathrooms very nice, someone always there to help out. We aren't very needy people though.

There was some nightlife across the street in the marketplace (bands, dance contests, kareoke) Don't go for the nightlife. There is none after 9pm. The gambling is nice but smokey.

The rest of the isalnd? Not much to see....yet. Still rebuilding after the hurricane of 2004. We drove around one day in a convertible but were not impressed. The best of the island is right around Lucaya Beach.

My wife and I intend to come back and just relax (again).

Won't go back to the Sheraton or to Grand Bahama Island. The majority of the employees in and around the hotels were RUDE. I have never felt like such an intruder on vacation before. We went on an all-inclusive. 15% gratuity is already added to all meals at restaurants, etc. There is no incentive to give good service. The food choices were nil. You can eat at the sugar mill pool bar, (min. menu) the Prop Club, the coffee bar (coffee, pastries, fruits, or the restaurant inside of the hotel which is ONLY OPEN FOR BREAKFAST. The pool attendant Yelled at my husband. The sugar mill pool slide was only open for 2 hours a day MAX. If you have kids they may be disappointed. There is no concierge. The room smelled like mold and the bathroom floor was continuously wet. Why? We don't know. We asked housekeeping for several items and had to keep calling as they would not accomodate our requests. My Credit Card was charged several hundred dollars for incidentals that were never incurred. Luckily I had an adequate limit on it. If you don't, beware. After complaining at the front desk about the hotel charging up my credit card the hotel employee told me it would take several business days to credit my credit card. Always wanted to go to the Bahamas, spend your money elsewhere. Sad, since this is the primary economy for the country.

Hubby and I were there from 6/8-6/12. Let me start off by saying that this was suppose to be a relaxing vacation and it was. It wasn't a "luxury" and/or "nightlife" type of vacation nor was I expecting it which is why I booked here instead of the Cove at Atlantis.

Hotel grounds - very nice and rustic
Check In - in less that 5 minutes
Room - 10th floor ocean view corner suite. Beautiful view, kinda small, bathroom small, but clean and A/C worked great
Pool - hung out at the main infinity pool and it was nice. we did swing by the other pool by the suites but it was toooo quiet for us.
Loungers - we never did the towel game, didn't have to. there were great spots all day. we usually got out to the pool @ 11:00 and got our poolside loungers with umbrella
Beach - pretty nice beach, no umbrellas though. only pet peeve is that the beach staff stacked the loungers in the middle of the beach which kinda blocked the view of the ocean from the infinity pool. they need to stack those loungers off to the side.
Restaurants on site - didn't go because wayyyy overpriced. instead we went across the street to get our alcohol, mixers and sand buckets. The sandbuckets come in handy because you can't bring coolers to the pool so we used our sand buckets as ice buckets. A bottle of Belvedere vodka cost aprox $80 at the hotel, but across the street, the same bottle costs $32...doesn't take a brain scientist to figure that out...
Restaurants across the street we ate:
(Breakfasts) any across is cheap and good. Zorba's waffles are GREAT!
Cally's - beef filet and blackened grouper, good
Quizno - just like any other
East Asia - hamachi, spider rolls, miso soup, korean bbq..very very good.
Sabor - located at Pelican Bay, surf/turf and filet, both very good, lobster was like butter
Lucianos - THE BEST chateaubriand I have had!! WOW, must have.
Billy's conch bar - at Sheraton - so-so...I was pretty hammered and anything fried tasted good at the time.
Entertainment - did the square one night. it was fun but shuts down early.
Casino - everynight until they kicked us out...literally...

We had a pretty good time and we'll do it again but will bring our boat over. Nice marina there too.

Email me with any questions. Enjoy!

… you are doing… you know what.

I know sometimes people just want to write a long review to rant how poorly they were treated. I will try to keep it short and sweet.

I was there for the Memorial Day weekend with my girlfriend. Upon checking-in, I went into my room and got on with “things”.

Suddenly, someone tried to get into our room without knocking. We were both naked and where shocked someone would walk in on us and not giving us time to cover ourselves.

We complained to the hotel manager (her name is Anya). She was rude and didn’t seem to care. I threatened to write a bad review on Tripadvisor. Her response was “If that is what you have to do…”. But she did promise she would investigate.

The next day, I went back to talk to her. After waiting 30 minutes at the lobby, I told the front desk we were hungry and wanted to ask how much longer it is going to be. The staff at front desk said “you can go and eat now or you can wait. It is up to you” (How friendly is that?) When I finally get to talk to Anya, she maintained they did nothing wrong and there is nothing they can do. I told her that incident made my girlfriend really upset. I requested if she could treat her something nice to make her happy. She said she is not authorized to do that (You are the manager, aren’t you? I am not looking for an upgrade to the presidential suite. Just a dinner voucher would probably do the job.), and will call me and leave me a message. As expected, she didn’t even bother.

I also requested a letter of apology. It had been more than 2 weeks and I am done waiting.

It is too bad the hotel is so poorly managed. People are so unfriendly and the quality is somewhat lacking. This is also somewhat true for GBI in general even though they rely heavily on tourism. Maybe they are a little spoiled with too many American tourists.

Save your time, money (and a lot of anguish) and stay away rom GBI and Westin!!!

“Good hotel, bad country”

The Westin Grand Bahama Island Our Lucaya Resort

The problem is the Bahamas and the bad attitude everywhere – there are some good people but the vast majority are just rude with a bad, bordering on scary attitude. I gather the island has an ongoing education and advertising campaign to try and teach people not to be rude and show respect to tourists – its not working.

The hotel was good by comparison – in fact I found the staff pretty good.
I had been visiting the states for business and decided to go a long weekend to the Bahamas – I knew I had made a mistake when I was in Bahamas immigration – the immigration officer ask me where I had been and I told her “a business trip for my company to the states” and she said just wait there – 15 minutes later another immigration officer came and collected me and told me I was being refused entry and being sent back to Miami – I tried to ask what was the problem but got no response – he took me to US immigration and advised I had been working illegally in the state and this was when I said “hey hold a minute here” – thankfully the US immigration checked out my passport and asked a few questions and said I wasn’t doing anything wrong – then the Bahamas immigration guy told me lots of foreigner work illegally in the states and then come to the Bahamas for a few days to then return to the states and renew their visas – the immigration guy was a bit physically rough with me during this whole experience and it just freaked me out – I’m only about 140lb and this guy was about 260lb.
Then I waited an hour at the airport for the Avis courtesy bus – got my car from Avis and they gave me an old beat up Toyota Echo – same bad attitude. Then to the hotel and I was checked in by Wanita and she was really good so not the whole island is that bad. I initially had room that had a terrible whining noise from what I think was the air-conditioning and Wanita got me moved to a nice quiet room.

The room was fine. The number one annoyance were the jet skis as they made lots of noise and these young Bahamian kids just wiz around on the beach – I wasn’t going to swim on this beach, it just looked too dangerous. In addition to the Jet Skis there are big powerboat probably about 150m offshore and they only occasionally pass but they are real noisy, like a PT boat. All weekend it was real noisy. On Monday a could front arrived and it was very windy and cold so the jet skis went away and it wasn’t so bad.

My room was real cold so remember to bring some warm clothes. Also at night from 1.00am to 7.00am they have a golf cart security vehicle with a loud beeper to let you know its coming that zips around the complex waking everyone up. The guy with the leaf blower starts about 7.30am.

First two days there was no hot water in the shower. Third day no problems, plenty of hot water.

Room service was slow and there was limited options but the steak was ok. Room service usually arrive and shout “room service” outside your door so you get to hear “ROOM SERVICE” alot.

Internet connection was very fast.

I thought the food was expensive:
For eg room service.
Steak $32.00
Delivery charge $2.00
Service charge 19% $6.00
Total 40.00
And I haven’t included a tip, ordered desert, coffee or a drink which would probably take it to about $70.00

Room two double beds ocean view $250.00
Govt Tax $15.00
Tourism levy $15.00
Service Charge $8.00
Resort Fee $5.00
Total per night $293

When I included some restaurants, room service and some laundry the total for 4 nights came to $1,500.00

To summarize, the hotel was ok but the island’s people are just terrible – there is a bad attitude everywhere, restaurants, avis hire car, gas stations etc and you would not want to have to rely on them if say you had an emergency, medical problem, a problem with the law. I felt scared the time I was there – I’ve felt this in a few countries but I wasn’t expecting it here. A country to avoid.
