My husband and I just returned from the Westin in Freeport and I must say first off that it does not compare to other Westin properties that I have stayed at.

The grounds are nice and spread out so it does not feel crowded and the beach is nice. That is about the only thing I can say that warrants the 300 a night price.

As others have posted, the staff is less than friendly and have no incentive to provide good service since 15% is already added to everything. Food is expensive and the quality is hit or miss. The only exception we found was the Ferry House for dinner. Although it is pricey, the food, presentation, and service are very good. (We ate there twice)

As for the casino, we encountered some of the unfriendliest dealers ever and dont even think about trying to order a drink from the tables. Your money will be gone long before your drink arrives!
All in all, I think this could be a much nicer resort if Westin ended its 15% policy and made these people work on tips. Maybe then they would at least pretend to care about the job they do!

This was our first trip to the Bahamas and we visited this resort on Easter Weekend. There were many groups visiting, wedding parties, seders, etc... The resort was full and felt that way. It was difficult to find pool loungers, etc... Kids were running up and down the halls, etc... I don't know if we just picked a bad weekend, but quite honestly, I would not return and spend the money we did, if it was this crowded again. It does not make for a pleasant experience, although the resort itself was nice.

The rooms were up-to-date, clean and the view from our balcony was amazing. The Bahamian water was beautiful, clear and such a pretty blue-green color. Even the sand on the beach was a light powdery texture. I enjoyed my beach walks. That was my favorite part!

I had to give the resort an "AVERAGE" grade due to the RUDE STAFF. I know they are of a different culture, but they responded rudely, took their sweet time in serving and basically didn't seem to care. I expected this type of service away from the hotel property, across the street at the Market Place, but not at the hotel.

There were some nica couple of attentive staff members, such as a very friendly gentleman who managed the fitness center. The fitness center is large and has many classes. I did not use the spa, so I can not comment, but it looks as though they do only treatments, as there was no private pool to relax.

I don't know if I would return to the Bahamas, quite honestly for the level of service and for the money we paid, I would probably prefer to return to the Cayman Islands.

We (a group of 3 women) spent 5 nights at the Westin. I was a bit leary due to mixed reviews, but can honestly say we found nothing to complain about. Our room was on the 8th floor of the Breakers Cay building and had a marina/island view. I had the choice of stayng in either the Breakers Cay building or a 1st floor room in Lighthouse Pointe. I found the room at Lighthouse Pointe to be a little musty, so that was out since I have bad allergies. Our room was immaculate and the bed was soooo comfortable. People complain about the drawer space, but it wasn't that bad for besides the 2 drawers, there is storage space underneath the tv.

We never ate at the resort except for coffee at the Starbucks in the lobby. My sister in law raved about Stoned Crab restaurant and we were very dissapointed with the food.

I truly cannot understand how people can complain about the attitude of the Bahamian people. We found them to be very friendly and polite. I think some tourists expect to be catered to and have an attitude. All it took was a hello and a smile. If you treat others the way you want to be treated, you'll never have a problem.

One day we ventured to Gold Rock beach and it was amazing, very secluded and natural. Otherwise our days were spent at the beach by the hotel and lunch at Billy Joes. They have the best, I mean the best fried snapper.

At night we went to the marketplace for dinner and hung out and danced to the music. We had a ball. Wednesday we went to the fish fry and really enjoyed it.

I can't wait to go back with my husband and son.

“Dont bother - more value for your money ANYWHERE else in the Carribbean...”

The Westin Grand Bahama Island Our Lucaya Resort

To sum it up quickly - one of the worst resorts I have ever stayed at, from start to finish. My wife and I had gone on an all-inclusive package, of which part was offset as part of a sales contest I had won with my company. I am VERY glad that it was set up as an all-inclusive, because having to pay for any more of this vacation than i did would have set me off.

The rooms were overpriced from what I had heard - we considered extending our stay, but didn't want to pay $300+/night for a hotel with questionable reviews - thankfully we didn't. Upon check-in, we went to our room on the Lighthouse side of the Westin on the first floor, only to find that the tile floor was wet, and the moisture level in the room was rediculous. Walking on the carpeting was like stepping on a sponge. We had also requested a king-size bed prior to check-in, but received two double beds instead. I called the front desk, and had our room switched - still no king-sized bed, even though others in our travel group had called about the same thing after checking in and were given the king size beds. Front desk staff did move us to another room on the second floor - still very damp, and had to have the staff bring us a dehumidifier (which is never good when your wife has asthma).

Service at the hotel in general was THE WORST I have ever experienced during travel. The 15% gratuity is built into everything you purchase, including the bottles of water. The staff at every restuarant or bar doesn't care about taking care of you or even listening to your requests (we sat at the breakfast buffet for 45 mintues waiting for 2 bottles of water and our check). The staff has no incentive whatsoever to take care of you, and it shows.

The food was average - it's what you would expect from an island resort. As I mentioned, even though we had been set-up with all-inclusive, we still had to sign for the bills everywhere we went - so we were able to see how much it would have cost if we were to pay for our food and drinks. I can tell you that it would not be worth the money at all. The food at the Prop Club was decent for a quick bite or lunch, China Beach and China Grill were also decent options. The food at Churchill's was fantastic, but they tend to run out of many options, so try to get there early.

I did also want to mention that the power did go out one night on half of the resort during our stay, which caused many of the restuarants to shut down. Although it didnt affect our room (which was on the other side of the resort), it did slow things down for our group a little bit.

Overall, there are many places that you can go in the Carribbean for the same price, and get a great value. For the money, this is just not worth it...

First off, let me say I do like the ground settings and the hotel. Front desk staff are very professional and helpful. But I found this hotel and the island itself is over hyped and not what they claim to be, and I'm not likely to return. This place is not up to par, or worth $200 a night. There isn't much to do on the island other than golf & beach. However, service-wise, it's WAY worse than Hawaii, Orlando or even Jersey.

Pros -
Got upgraded to Lanai Suite due to Platinium status, need to ask for amentity points. No free water. No vending machines in Suite area.
Beautiful ground, right by beach. Can open door and hear the waves.
Helpful front desk staff. Weekdays are not as busy.
Right by Market Place. No need for a car.
Very nice workout room.
Free internet.

Cons -
Really bad food everywhere. NYC price tag, fast food quality.
15% charge already added, so some staff just don't care. They seem to be more relaxed than the guests. E.g. wait by the beach stand for 10 mins to get 2 towels. Instead of serving guests first, the guy was fussing over his belongings / phone and make us wait. No big deal. But when everybody on the ground is like that, it started to get annoying.
Mainly conference + wedding going on. Feel like I"m stepping into someone's meeting ground.
Have to look out for scam constantly. I travel extensively globally, and never felt like this before. Taxi has no meters, or driver won't turn it on. Prices are at will in some stores. Went to get soda (btw, how can Westin have no sundries store? Have to walk all the way to Sheraton). Rum costs $1.50 a bottle, they charged us $9 for a 6-pack diet coke, and it's priced differently every time we go. Again, it just kept building up.
Spa was very disappointed. This is my first time walking into a cold steam room. Steam wasn't turned on, and took 15 min to warm up. Jacuzzi (really just a bath tub) has no water in it. Had to fill myself (of course nobody did). Dark and small. My observation is that the spa was overbooked with customers, so why not let the steam room on, at least at the hour when everyone is checking in / out?

In short, I don't feel very welcomed on the island / hotel. 3 days is almost enough.

Rooms -
Lanai Suite has 2 bathrooms, living room, sleeping room. Bed is very high, maybe difficult for elders to climb up and down. No hot water 2nd day we're there. No notice, no appology.
Nice turn down service.
Master bathroom very small and dark, compared to rest of the room.
Carpet was sticky and I couldn't figure out why. It seems clean, maybe just from the moisture.
Room has extra fridge for guests to put their water / soda.

Restaurants reviews -
Prop Club @ Westin - Bad bad bad. Ordered blackened snapper for dinner. Got fried one instead. Water tastes funny. No service to speak of. This place makes TGIF look like gourmet food.

Willy Broadleaf @ Westin - Breakfast buffet. Overpriced. Long omelet line. Not much selection. You have to ask to be sat down, ask to get juice, ask for attention. Annoying.

Hammerhead poolbar - No real pool service, order yourself, so why am I charged 15% tip? Use flimsy plastic cup, which got blown away when it's half empty. Saw that happened over and over.

Bar at Churchhill @ Westin - Excellent. Only drank there. Great bartendar, he's unusually busy, but very accomodating. Top glasses off once in a while. The best service I got on the island.

Pub at Marketplace - Great food. Best cracked conch. Even the pull pork is outstanding. Nice vibe and very good service.

Stoned Crab - probably the biggest disappointment ever. Had crab platter + peeled shrimp appertizer. Shrimp was already peeled, looks like they were defrosted recently. No snowcrab, substitute with warm stoned crab which were very chewy. Maybe I should have gotten the cold ones. Stuffed crab shell was an overcooked, overly breaded thing that are straight from supermarket frozen isle. It's not even real crab meat. Crab cake is exactly the same thing. I cannot believe how bad the food was. I want to say I just ordered the wrong thing, but people
around the table also were very disppointed.

Carribean Cafe at Marketplace - Just ok. Not bad, but I could have the same thing at dorm cafe. Nice host though, attentive.

Billy Joe's - Another thumb's up. Grilled lobster tail is the best. Not to be missed.

Conch stand at the Marketplace - $8 for a conch salad. Takes 20 min for him to make one, but it's very very good. More like a ceviche. Highly recommended.
