I recently returned (August 2007) from a weeklong Dolphin Expeditions trip and cannot wipe the smile from my face. Memories of the people and other creatures I met will remain with me for a long time. If you are thinking of joining the crew of Calypso Spirit--and have the right attitude--the adventure of a lifetime awaits you. However, in view of the negative reviews I’ve read here recently, I’d like to offer these thoughts: Prospective visitors need to remember that this is not Disneyland (thank goodness). The Bimini dolphins and other sea life are wild, and follow the rhythms of nature that we humans can only hope to understand. As the crew explains, every week is different in terms of weather, and number and quality of dolphin encounters. Leave your preconceptions at home, and be ready to absorb each experience as it presents itself. Regarding the accommodations, if you are seeking luxuriously appointed staterooms and pampering, save your money, as that is not what this trip is about. I spent several years living aboard a sailboat and have been on dozens of boats, and the accommodations on Calypso Spirit are quite typical (though roomier than I was used to on our 40 foot boat!) The food was abundant (I gained 4 pounds—my only complaint) and tasty. In response to the concerns someone raised about egg storage, my sailor husband taught me when we cruised Mexico on our boat that storing eggs at room temperature is acceptable and common practice as long as the shells remain intact. You will know immediately if an egg has gone bad when you crack it open. Furthermore, refrigeration does not kill Salmonella. Cooking does. As for the crew, I have nothing but admiration for them. Geoff’s intimate knowledge of Bimini, the surrounding waters, and local people enriches the experience for his guests, and his positive attitude and love of life is infectious. Crew member Mark, a marine biologist who ran the local shark research facility for several years, was always ready to answer our questions about the local marine life, and helped us to shed our fears of entering their strange underwater world. Tita, first mate and cook, was warm and welcoming, and was in tune with the needs of everyone in the group. If you love nature, are open to learning from others--and about yourself--and are comfortable rubbing elbows with like-minded people from all over the world, then don’t hesitate to book a trip with Dolphin Expeditions! You won’t be “disappointed.”
