We stayed at Fernandez Bay Village for a week in November. The resort's location is beautiful, with the white sand and the blue-green water. The main attraction for us was the beachfront cottages. All of their amenities are on the beach and you literally walk out your front door and you are on the beach and less than 50 feet from the water. It was so calming to sit on the beach in the morning and have our tea or sit on our front porch at night and read while watching the sunset.
Whether you are going here to relax or to explore the island there is plenty to do of either. We happened to go during the American Thanksgiving, which turned out to be a regular family/friend reunion, and the place was full. If you are looking for a quiet, romantic excursion perhaps bypasses this weekend. We took the opportunity to escape and rented bikes from Fernandez Bay. We rode to Old Bight, which is quite close, and then up to the Hermitage which is an old monastery built in the late 1800's. It is a short/easy hike to the Hermitage and well worth it. It is built on the highest point in the Bahamas and the Hermitage and the view of the island are remarkable. Since the ride into Old Bight and the hike only took a couple hours we rode the bikes to the other side of the island to the Atlantic Ocean. (Fernandez Bay is on the Exuma Sound side of the island). This road was rough in some parts but I would recommend doing this. There are miles and miles of beach without a soul in sight. It is a panorama that wont be forgotten. The island is very rustic and remote.
There is plenty to do around the resort and there are kayaks available to take out anytime. There is good snorkeling all around the bay. The best is at the point to the south. It is also worth checking out the rocks to the north and at the 2 rocks that can be accessed by kayak or swam to.
We only attended a few meals, as we found them a bit expensive. The food was good for the most part. Trying to get fresh fruit and veggies on the island is a bit of a challenge and a lot more expensive than what we are used to since it is imported. If you don’t want to pay the high prices for the meals there is a market, which the guests are invited to use. It isn’t well advertised since they want you to eat their meals but if you ask at the front desk they will give you a key to get in and tell you where it is. This is where the kitchen gets all of their supplies. You can also get beer, Perrier, pop, etc. here for 1/2 of the price you pay at the bar.
The staff was all very friendly and helpful as were the owners.
With so many other places to go in the world we most likely won’t be back but would absolutely recommend it to anybody.
