My wife and I stayed 7 nights at Greenwood Mar 4 - 11. We loved Cat Island and Greenwood. However, it is NOT for everyone. If you are looking for casinos, nightlife, excitement, and partying GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. You will not find it at Greenwood. If you prefer tranquility, serenity, and the sound of the surf you will like it here.
Greenwood is a 20 room resort on the south end of Cat Island. At most, there were 2 other couples there while we stayed. The rooms were simple but sufficient and included a bed, dresser, and bathroom. Rooms have either a ceiling fan or a/c neither of which we needed in March. There are no TV's or phones in the rooms. There is a TV in the lounge area. This isn't what I would call upscale but it is definitely serviceable and clean. There were some cracked tiles in the bathroom and the grounds aren't as picturesque as an expensive all-inclusive. There is a fresh water pool but it was a little chilly. It is supposed to be much warmer in the summer.
Greenwood is quite isolated from the usual touristy type activities. We rented a car for 1 day ($75 us) and headed north. We drove for a couple of hours and there really wasn't much to do and we will likely pass on the car if we return. There are some nice beaches around the island but no need to leave the 8 mile stretch the resort is on. If you do venture out, try lunch at the Bluebird. Quite reasonably priced and delicious. Don't expect shopping areas like Front St in St Maarten or elsewhere. You won't find much beyond a few shacks selling straw baskets. Bring a few novels or read some of the ones in the library to help you wind down.
The meal plan was $48 (us) per person per day. This included breakfast and dinner. We made PBnJ sandwiches with the delicious Bahamian bread leftover at breakfast and had that for lunch which saved a few dollars. I tend to lean toward 'picky' eater status but found the food surprisingly good. The food was certainly better than any of the all-inclusives we have stayed at. We had fresh (off the boat !) grouper and lobster twice. We found that the staff would pretty much cater to whatever we asked for. If you have a taste for something and it can be found on the island, you will probably get it. Dinner was the event of the day and all the guests and sometimes a few visiting ex-pats or locals would gather before dinner for appetizers (conch fritters, cheese and crackers, or whatever is on hand) and a drink or two from the honor bar to solve the world's problems.
The diving on Cat Island is fantastic. There is a dive shop on site. I dove 4 days and it was just me and the dive master. Cat Island is located near the Tounge of the Ocean and there are amazing wall dives here. The view is majestic at most of the sites with swim throughs that open into the abyss. Imagine being at the top of a 3000 foot building and looking down. That's what the wall dives are like. There were no limits on the diving other than diving within your skill level. I have some experience diving but the only thing that comes close to this is Saba.
I don't have all my pictures handy but here are some of the sunrise and beach.
