We have stayed at Surfers Haven multiple times over the years, including the year we were lucky enough to escape to Eleuthera for 5 weeks. (We stayed for all 5 weeks at the Haven for less than it would have cost to stay a week at some resorts!)
There is so much to recommend this place, so I will try to list a few of the points, but really, the main thing that we always enjoy is simply that it feels like a family community. The other guests are usually a varied mix of surfers, young couples exploring the islands, backpackers making their way from wherever to wherever and the occasional 'hey I just wanted to get away and this place seemed cool'. Add to this the fact that Tom and Liz are just the most hospitable, helpful hosts and the end result is a relaxed, fun, easy going experience that has us return year after year.
We have rented pretty much every room that they have to offer as well as the small cottage that they manage over the years depending on our budget at the time and availability, and have stayed at every season Eleuthera has - so I think we can say that we have a pretty good idea of exactly what you can expect.
Firstly, the price cannot be beat. Nowhere on the island are you going to be able to wake up to views of the ocean and free morning yoga sessions for even double of what you will pay at the Haven. I can't put it simpler - if you are on a tight budget then this is THE place to stay, in fact even if you are not on a tight budget but would rather just get great value for money then the same still applies! No, it isnt The Ritz, it is a clean, well equipped, perfectly situated and for the price, absolutely unbeatable retreat.
Location is ideal. Yes if you want to surf, then this is without doubt the closest place to stay to Surfers Beach.. but there is much more than that and there is diving, snorkeling, kayaking, bonefishing and that classic Eleuthera pastime 'sploraging' to be had at every turn. OK, so my wife and I made up the word sploraging, but basically it means exploring the dozens of hidden gems that Eleuthera has to offer by going off the beaten path. Yes we are nerdy, so what?
Instant access to Eleuthera life. If you don't want to be a tourist, then Tom and Liz are the instant fast track to the 'real' Eleuthera. Before you know it you will be playing poker or bashing out a few chords at a local jam night, and made to feel like this is truly where you belong.
In fact, that really is the gist of the whole thing - being made to feel like you are a part of a wider Eleuthera family. And like any family, it has its responsibilities and this is, to us at least, only a perfectly natural and expected part of being welcomed into the fold. Don't show up and act like a prima donna, stamp your feet and think that people should be there to serve you. This isn't a Disney Cruise ship with minimum wage sycophants scrabbling for a 10% tip - The Haven is as genuine an experience as you will ever find, filled with people who epitomize the expression 'you get out what you put in'. Relax, be nice, and embrace a genuine community that welcomes you into its midst and you will have an amazing experience.
If Liz is cooking pizza be sure to ask her to put one in for you - she is an amazing pizza chef!!
