On a three week trip throughout Ireland, Scotland and England, Northfield was by far the most comfortable B&B we stayed in. It is a newly built house with huge bedrooms, wonderfully comfortable beds, modern bathrooms (the floor in ours was heated) and incredible views from any of the windows. Hugh and Susan were welcoming and helpful, more than ready to take time out from their own busy schedules to chat about life in the Orkneys. Breakfast was excellent with fresh eggs from their own hens and there were ducks in the front and sheep and horses in the back for the kids to visit. The B&B might appear on the map to be out of the way from the bulk of the attractions on the Mainland, but the distances on the Mainland are actually not that great, and the views from the house and solitude in the evenings made it well worth being a bit off the beaten path. It was perfectly located for spending an evening at the Gloup and Mull Head or driving to the south to see the Churchill barriers after dinner. It is also very close to Kirkwall with it's wonderful shops and sightseeing. This was our second, and hopefully not our last trip to the Orkneys, and when we return, it will definitely be to stay at Northfield again. Cannot recommend it enough!!
