We were scared of the reviews for this hotel. I am happy to report that it was not as bad as people have suggested - at least not for us!! That is why I am taking the time to write this. I consider myself to be a person with a certain level of high expectations but I still found that the place was acceptable (even with its flaws). The reviews here seem to be old/out-dated and mostly negative so I wanted to share my humble opinion.

First of all... we were lucky to have gotten an upgrade at check-in to a Jr. Suite facing the front/beach (thanks Mauricio!!). There are only 2 on each floor!! However, all rooms seem to have a great view, so I wouldn't worry. This gave our trip a nice start!

Here are my only complaints. We checked in at 10pm, so by then the dinner buffet was sketchy and over-cooked from being heated for so many hours (since 6pm or 7). I wouldn't recommend getting to the buffet too late.

The pool is small, so it gets full quickly. There were a lot of locals from Mexico City who brought their kids there and they didn't get out of the pool until 8pm. The same went for the hot tub - too busy. However, they looked like they were all having fun! This lasted until Jan.1-Jan.6.09; after that the hotel was very quiet and not over-crowded. My BF and I weren't interested in the pool anyways, so it didn't bother us much (HOWEVER, the guy hosting games in Spanish all day by the pool was loud. It sucked that we could hear him on the beach as well - which was a little annoying).

The beach sand was hot. You need to run into the water at times (bring flip-flops!). We were lucky with the weather being 32-39C during the day, 26-28C at night with no clouds!! There were a lot of vendors trying to sell you massages, jewellery, pottery, water sports etc. The water was the perfect temp, however there was some plastic & various garbage floating around from the tourists at times, which was maddening )= Also, sometimes the water was rough so everyone would have to stay out it for a bit.

I liked the all-inclusive food. Breakfast and lunch offered a lot of options that were tasty and even made to order!! I recommend trying the mexican dishes. The breakfast included fresh fruit, juices, omelettes, waffles, pancakes, cereals, mexican fare, hash browns, cactus, etc.The lunches were great, especially inside the air conditioned dining room where the buffet had many options like made to order quesadillas!! yum!! Or you can eat burgers/fries by the pool which were 'ok'. I was disappointed by all of the 'American' fast food type options (which seemed to be geared towards pleasing kids/teens with choices like spaghetti, chicken fingers, hot dogs, grilled cheeses). The buffet dinners weren't amazing but you can always find something you'll like. I recommend eating a la carte if you can swing it. The waiters aren't really that service oriented.. so don't expect to be pampered. All though a steady stream of tips keeps them interested in getting you a drink.

Overall, I wouldn't panic/worry about coming here for a fair price (under $1000) IF it isn't TOO busy. It was at full capacity when we were there during the first week of Jan 2009, but not at the end of our stay. Also, I wouldn't come here during Reading week or March break when American teens are supposedly puking in the pool and acting debaucherous! The hotel is clean, but not 5 star. I'd call it a decent 3.5 star because of the lack of great service and extraordinary food. The rooms are closer to a 4 star. The bar on the beach is a 3 star hole in the wall. But when you tip well the drinks keep flowing!! LOL However, A.I is only until 10pm which sucked!!! We had to buy beer at the convenience store out front for $1.50 a king can when we would come back from going out. They won't allow you to take bottles from the bar to your room, just foam cups so you can't stock up on the all-inclusive drinks (no room service for all-inclusives either). But none of this was the end of the world for us anyways. We were ok with buying a few beers. After all, we'd been drinking all day on the beach!

So...If you are not high maintenance and used to being overly pampered, you will enjoy it here. It's nice and pleasant. But not a 5 star as suggested! Also, not that romantic, but we still enjoyed our time there together (=

Where to go:

We ate out at Beto's which was AMAZING down the strip by the Bungy place (which offers an interesting bungy jump/beach view). It served the best lobster I've ever had.

We also took the Sunquest La Perla tour at $69 CDN each for dinner/show/transport. They have Cliff divers there jumping 100+feet. I recommend it!! It's really pretty and well lit. The food there was awesome too - they offered a fixed menu, which was nice and simple.

Don't eat at Tacos and Beer on the strip. The beef is chewy. Yuk.

Acapulco is a busy, vibrant city so if you are looking for quiet, peaceful and secluded, look elsewhere. It's a great place for action, music, shopping and excitement (not to mention crazy cool clubs), the smell of diesel, crazy cabs and over the top tourist attractions.

Wasn't the best, yet not the worst

12 Jul 2008 | Trip type: Family

We just got back from a six day trip and stayed at the Copa. We've never been toAcapulco so this was a shot in the dark. I've read all the reviews and figured what the heck!

The hotel is clean. We had jr suites and they were nice b/c not only did we have a balcony but we had a beach front view. It was nice waking up to the sound of the ocean each morning.

I had read reviews about people complaining about their elevators & thought they were being snooty. They weren't. There are almost 300 rooms in this place & 18 floors that have only 3 elevators to service them all. It took FOREVER to get an elevator, especially when it was time to go down in the morning or in the evening when the guests were all coming out of the pool.

Housekeeping cleaned our room one day & took the dirty towels & only left us 1 clean towel. My husband called for more towels but they were never brought up.

We ate a few meals there b/c we were on the all inclusive plan and I have to say the food was good (although not once did they set out tortillas to acompany their Mexican food) but it was the same meals daily. Hardly a variety. We mostly had breakfast there and ate out in the city the rest of the time. Found a good restaurant a few blocks from the hotel.

The pool area is a MAD HOUSE! Its full ALL THE TIME and not just by hotel guests but by locals who bring their whole family in and grocery bags w/food & drinks for the day! They've got an event staff to entertain the pool guests, but not once did they say/do anything in English. Ok, I know we're in Mexico but really you'd think they'd try to aim to please the American tourist who are spending lots of money to stay there. Nope.

The staff was friendly and spoke English, those that I spoke to at least. There are gift shops in the hotel but they're more costly than the price of the street shops so save your $$ & get it for less on the street.

The all inclusive bar rocked! We made friends w/Reyes, one of the bartenders, and he'd hook us up. Each time we got a round we'd tip the waiter or the bartender. Its appreciated both ways, you know.

The sand on the beach was course and hurt! It looks so soft and invitine but its composed of tiny rocks so watch yourself. Speaking of the beach, as soon as we stepped out of the hotel onto the beach we're bombarded w/more vendors! They're selling everything from fake henna tattoo's to tequila shots, cheap jewlery & food that's not been on ice in who knows how long! So watch what you decide to buy while on the beach.

We said we'd go back to Acapulco again b/c we enjoy the culture, but we'd never stay here again. Next time we're going to look into renting a condo or time share so we don't have to deal with all the above.

We were in Acapulco in Jan 2008, I read the reviews on the Cocabana Hotel and they were not real great I was worried but the price we recieved for all inclusive was worth the try. We had a wonderful time, the food was better than some places I have been in Mexico on the all inclusive. our room was nothing spectacular but clean. The waiters on the beach were wonderful to us. The hotel does cater to the locals on the weekends so there is no chance at getting in the pool but it was clean. I came down with Pnemonia while there and the staff was very helpful with medical information. An american women at the airport saw that we stayed at the Cocabana and she too had read the reviews and was worried so booked somewhere else. Her beach was closed the whole week and ours was not. Overall we had a wonderful vacation and I would stay there again for the price

Copa fun for spring breakers

Our group of eleven was moved to Copa after the fire in Playa Suites Best Western. The administrative staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Everyday in the afternoon they had what we called "crazy/sexy pool games" for the spring breakers. They were a lot of fun and attracted a few hundred of the college age hotel guests to the pool. I WOULD NOT stay at Copa during spring break unless you are of college age. Like most hotels in Acapulco during spring break time, Copa is not a good place to bring a family. The beach in front of Copa is a little nasty. The water is brown , murky, and the bottom drops off quickly. I read another review that said the brown water was because the sewage dumps into the ocean nearby, which makes a lot of sense now. Several of my friends were almost hurt by the waves. The all inclusive food is pretty decent, but is nearly the same everyday and gets old after a few days. If you get a chance, watch the night show in the El Agave Bar which takes place 2-3 nights a week. My major is Fire Protection Engineering, so I am very keen on the fire safety of buildings. First, neither Copa nor any other hotels that I saw in Acapulco had fire sprinklers. Copa has two open stairwells, which is a major concern. The hotels in Mexico (including Copa) don't seem to understand that if there is a fire on a lower floor, the smoke and heat will travel up the stairwells if the fire doors are open. This would prevent you escape out of your only exit. All of our rooms had working smoke detectors. I became sick on the day before we checked out and i finally opted to see the private medical service in the Copa lobby. There was a slight language barrier between the doctor and I, but we were able to effectively communicate. The initial consult was $50 and they gave me a shot in the butt of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory. I felt a little better in about 3 hours. They also tried to give me half of a mystery tablet to let me relax and fall asleep (which I did not end up taking). I consulted my primary doctor when I returned and he said that what they gave me was necessary. I was a little cautious about trusting the medical people there, but I would trust them if I had a problem in Mexico again. I would go back and stay there as a spring breaker.

I must say after reading some of the reviews of other travellers, i was quite afraid of what i encounter upon my arrival, however it was not bad at all. I will give you a run down of my experience.Basically, when travelling to different countries don't expect the same standard of things(not in a bad way) as you would in Canada or the USA as its not the same. THE STAFF: is very helpful even though you sometimes experience a language barrier if you don't speak Spanish but nothing to worry about you can get by. ACCOMADATIONS: The rooms have a plantation home feeling to them if you are accustomed to the Hilton or if you are snobby then it may not be the place for you. Just remember when taking a shower C is for hot (Caliente ) and F is for cold (frio). FOOD: The food at the buffet was ok. They tried to make North American foods(ie pasta&meatballs) but really i think they should have had more mexican foods to help out the experience. THE BEACH: Prepare to be annoyed, there are people trying to sell you everything (sunglasses, jewellery, food, massages, hair braiding etc.). the police do ask them to leave however but they just walk down the beach so u will experience it at all the beach hotels. Just say no if ur not interested and not trying to get hustled for certain items. I think you should judge the water and sand according to your own travels. (I been to nicer in the Carribbean) THE POOL: I personal found it was reeking of sunblocks, So i personally didnt use it that often and when i did it was really early in the morning. If you go around Spring Break you should have fun with all the activities,(sexercise) depending on your crowd and what your purpose is there. (im urban they definitely were not my crowd)TOURS: You can get some really nice pictures if interested in that stuff, but dont let them take you to the Market/Flea Market, you will get hustled if you dont shop around and bargain. so just aheads up on that.
On that note the rest is yours to discover. Dont drink the water you can go to Walmart which is walking distance and buy evain or nestle (its walmart you can find whatever you want and its 24hrs) There is also a Baskin Robbins (Canadians you know what that is and also Scotia Bank) Haagen Daz, Pizza Hut, Domino Pizza Just go and enjoy the scenery and the night life and thats it.

  • Liked — its convience...it was walking distance to everything
  • Disliked — all inclusive is 10am-10pm
