“Loved it!”

Hotel Acamar Acapulco

We just returned from a week at the Acamar Beach Hotel in Caleta. We chose this location because we didn't want to stay on the Bay strip with the towering hotels, noisy bars and clubs, which is more reminiscent of Miami Beach.

Caleta is gorgeous and the hotel was very clean and the staff were friendly and spoke enough fractured English to make themselves understood. We didn't stay in the famous room 507 but we did have a beautiful ocean view, large terrace with kitchenette and a 20-litre bottle of purified water, fruit and a bottle of wine compliments of the hotel, which was a very nice touch. Incidentally, all the "07" rooms are large.

Caleta is very close to the cliff divers (a show well worth seeing) and only a short bus ride from The Zoccalo -- a great place to eat and wander around in the evening. And, yes, you can flag down the buses right outside the hotel -- or anywhere -- just hold on to your spine and neck as these "buses" are more like tin cans on wheels and the drivers are crazy!

We have been to Playa Del Carmen and Puerto Vallarta but Acapulco is by far the most picturesque. And Caleta is "real" Acapulco. If you want to see Acapulco in all its splendour, take "The Acaray" boat cruise. We took the 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. cruise which included the magnificent sunset.

The weekends are busy with noisy Mexican tourists and the hotel could use a bar but there is La Cabana right next door, which serves decent food and drinks.

It was scorching hot and very humid every day but was very pleasant when the fierce sun went down. We didn't see our Sunquest rep the entire trip and did feel somewhat stranded.

An all-inclusive would do well in Caleta as there isn't too much to do after 9 p.m. We took the bus several times to Zoccalo or to the Strip.

Quite a few of the Torontonians in our hotel stayed for 2-4 weeks. For us, 1 week was just right.

“A No Star Hotel”

Hotel Acamar Acapulco

We just returned from a vacation in Acapulco. We loved Acapulco, the people, the buses, and the weather. However the Acamar was a huge disappointment and anyone who would rate it as a 31/2 star hotel has never stayed there. It was shabby at best and actually in our opinion it was a dump. I almost cried when the tour bus dropped us off. There was no hot water, at best there was lukewarm water dribbling from the taps a few times, but mostly there was nothing coming out of the tap at all. It was cold showers for the duration of our trip. We were provided with two threadbare towels and only after tipping were three fluffy towels provided. The staff was very friendly but no-one spoke nor understood English so communicating needs was difficult. The pool was very small and did not look clean enough to use and good luck trying to find a piece of beach to sit on. If you expect absolutely nothing from a hotel then you will be satisfied but in our opinion it does not even come close to meeting acceptable standards.

“Gem of Western Acapulco (Playa Caleta)”

Hotel Acamar Acapulco

28 Apr 2006
11/12 found this review helpful

Hotel Caleta is on the Western Edge of Acapulco, away from the main strip of discos and bars (though cabfare to the main strip is only 20-30 pesos), on a family-friendly pointe called Playa Caleta. Beautiful beach on an inlet between main Acapulco Bay and Isla. Easy to take boats to Isla for better, less-populated beaches. Boats leave from less than 1/4 mile from the hotel, cost about 50 pesos-- or get a fisherman to take you across for closer to 10.

Hotel itself was breathtaking. Gives a feel of "old mexico" and does not resemble tradional Los Cabos resorts, for example. Room was very comfortable, though sparsely decorated. Balcony was a huge shaded terace overlooking the ocean that was larger than my entire hotel room. The showers are wonderful, and there is cable TV with a good selection of channels in English.

Restaurant was very tasty, offered reasonably priced fare throughout the day. Breakfast should not be skipped-- it was my favorite meal while eating at the hotel.

Two swimming pools, one fresh water and one salt water, with very nice decks for laying out, and bars next to each of the pools.

Front desk staff was the best I could have ever imagined. Some do not speak the best English, but there is a fluent English-speaker present at each shift. Very good for helping with finding things to do around Acapulco, and suggesting discos and restaurants.

All in all, this hotel was the best part of my stay in Acapulco!! It provided a beautiful, quiet, and relaxing place from which to explore the city. Staying in the hotel provided me with beautiful beaches nearby and breathtaking pools stacked at the edge of the Pacific. Going out was easy, as cabs are plentiful and cheap-- less than $4 to get to the main Costera. Hotel Caleta provided the perfect relaxing place to be in Acapulco!!

We stayed at the Acamar in 2002. We were the only gringos in the hotel and we LOVED it. OK its not 4 star but we only paid $40.00 US per night so what do you expect to get for that. In Australia you would only get a backpacker room.
