“Love Mexico, Especially the Pacific Coast”

Club Maeva Manzanillo

1 Apr 2008

Club Maeva, Manzanillo, Mexeco. February 26-March 11, 2008
We really enjoyed our 2 week vacation in the warm sunny pacific coast. There was lots to see and we were treated well. The food was not too bad as we were able to choose what we wanted to eat since the ela carte was not limited. The only thing that we think needed much improvement was the rooms service and hard beds.

“Surprsingly Good”

After reading many of the reviews I figure we'd just make the best of it since there was not much else available for travel during Easter week.

What a surprise at how nice and clean this resort turned out to be.

We had a room in the 600's with a great view and a deck to sit out on to enjoy the views. Clean, no bugs and all plumbing all worked fine. I brought air mattresses because of everyone complaining about the hard beds and never even had to use them.....The mattress on the sofa bed was very comfortable .Being Easter week we figured the rooms were going to be noisey but they were extremely quiet and seemed well insulated.

We are beach people and the playa did not dissappoint. The water was a lot colder than I was expecting but felt good once I got in. I love body surfing and the waves provided continuous good sets to ride. We walked as far as we could in both directions which took about an hour round trip each direction. Each day was clear and sunny with little humidity. Since we were higher up in the 600's I read about how tough a hike it was to go from the beach back to the room....Give me a break... I'm 63 and had triple by pass surgery and it was a piece of cake to go up to the room.

We also are tennis players and they have 10 outstanding conditioned courts to play on and 3 pro's. We ended up asking a Mexican couple from Guadalahara who did'nt even speak english to play doubles and we ended up having a great 2 hour 3 set match with a tie breaker going 9-7 in the final set.

We ate at Alfreado's every night and had no trouble signing up at the information tower each morning around 9 am. Breakfast with the great variety of fruit, the made to order omletts and fried eggs and fresh orange juice was a perfect way to start the day. We ate at the seaside retaurant each day and liked the views and the fact that it was open until 4pm.

We went on the hike and a bike ride guided by one of the Amigo's which you can sign up for at the information tower. We did take a bus on the main road right by the ocean to downtown Manzannillo for 5 pesos each way.....The bus is called Miramar and " directo" needs to be at the bottom of the sign in the front window of the bus.

“Great Holiday”

The accomodations were great. They are VERY SPACIOUS. We we are a family of 5 and find it very difficult to find places to stay. We were given 2 2 bdrm villas (same price as 1, and we had ample space. We would have been fine if we had only one 2 bdrm villa.

The water slides are a blast. The beach is beautifull. There are always umbrellas and lounge chairs available.

My only negative is the food. It is MEDIOCRE. There is always something that's edible, but not necessarily a lot. The breakfast is always good. Lunch and dinner are hit and miss. The restaurant by the beach seemed the worst and they should have always had burgers available there, but didn't. You had to go back to hotel (a bit of a walk), to get more selection. There also wasn't as much fruit as I expect in the tropics.

We had a great time. Staff is great and helpfull, shows are very good.

It is a budget trip, but well worth it.

Let me preface my comments by saying that I'm an experienced traveler, I speak Spanish fluently, and my husband is Mexican. Language and cultural differences were not a problem here....On the plus side, the property is big with several different pool, beach and restaurant options. In general, the staff was friendly. Unfortunately, there were lots of negatives, especially if you are traveling with small children or others who need special provisions. This hotel is poorly managed. 1) The rooms were marketed as having fridges and microwaves, but they were all removed for "updating". We were traveling with small children and needed to deal with storing and heating up milk for bottles. We did manage to get moved to a room with a fridge, but only after raising a stink and being told more than once that they did not having any rooms available. 2) The rooms are decent, but you need to walk down steps to get to the living area/kitchen. There is also a 3-foot drop off next to the step that isn't protected with a railing, so small children could very easily fall and get hurt. 3) Beautiful hills and landscape, however again, no railings. There are 10-12 feet drop-
offs on some of the roads in the villas that are on the hill. You need to be extra careful with small children and always hold their hand. 4) We called in advance to reserve a wheelchair and were told it wouldn't be a problem. When we got there, there were no wheelchairs available, and the hotel made no effort to find us one. We had to beg and offer to pay for a rental before they found us one. 5) First time in my life where a cash machine did not dispurse the correct funds (tried to take out $2000 pesos of a Banco Santander cash machine and only got $1600 pesos - though the receipt said $2000 pesos). The hotel called Banco Santander to let us talk with an agent, and they told us we needed to call our bank in the US. The hotel refused to cover the expense of the long-distance phone call back to our bank in the US, even though the cash machine is on their property. Some of the workers at the desk actually said that this isn't the first time this problem has happened. The manager was very rude and refused to help with this problem. Strongly recommend you do not use the cash machine on property. If you want pesos, get some before you get there. The airport only has one cash machine and it was out of service when we got there. The next closest cash machine is 20 minutes down the road from the resort in the opposite direction from the airport. 6) Forget trying to get decent towels in your rooms. Bring your own or use the ones from the pool. PS - if you're eating in the restaurant and the fans aren't turned on....don't look up...you might get really grossed out.

“Overall enjoyable, room problems”

Club Maeva Manzanillo

Thunder Bay, ON

We stayed at Club Maeva from March 8 - 15th and did enjoy the Club Maeva Resort even though we did have some room problems. Before we went on our journey we checked a lot of the reviews on Club Maeva and were quite nervous what to expect there. Overall (with some room problems) we were happy with the resort.

Room Problems at Club Maeva

We (family with 2 kids) arrived late on the 8th at 10:30 pm and got a room # 425 with only 2 single beds. Because it was late and we didn't want to go through all the hassle late at night, we slept in this villa for one night and arranged to get a different room with an extra queen bed + 2 single beds (incl. 2 bathrooms) the following day. The only room (apparently) they had left was room # 666 (it was fine) and seemed much cleaner than # 425. Two days later we got a note that we had to move into another room due to maintenance issues in the 600 villas. The front desk gave us another room # and keys to take a look at, but when my husband entered the room it was already occupied. Again we had to tell the front desk that it was already occupied and we decided that we wanted to stay in the room # section 5.. (Close to the beach and restaurants). So there we were again we had to pack our things and had to move again to room # 512. We found all the rooms had musty smell, now this one seemed like a smokers' room but it was ok clean and it had the extra bed in there. About a day later we had problems with our toilet in our downstairs bathroom and called for a maintenance person. They tried to fix it but it did not work. So on Thursday (2 days before leaving) they wanted us to move again into another room. We refused and said we would use the upstairs bathroom.
Due to all the previous reviews we kina expected the rooms not to be the greatest - and they really are not the best. However, we did not let these issues bother us too much. The resort itself is very nice and we did have a good time over all.

Ratings:

Rooms (2) - musty smell and a lot of maintenance issues.(A lot of walking, room# 1,2, 3 and 5 hundred very little stairs and less walking.)

Cleanliness (2 1/2) - not the cleanest, but the floors were always clean and the bed sheets were clean and fresh every day. Found some dead bugs in the shelves. I was nervous about bugs as well, but there were none alive in the room -at least.

Pools (4) - great pools with a lot of entertainment and fun
Check out the solarium, quiet and very relaxing.
Water slides were fun for the kids.

Beach ( 4) - Nice sandy beach, strong rip currents (keep an eye on your kids). A lot of Mexican peddlers who want to make a deal with you, be careful and offer low!

Staff (3 1/2) - They all were very friendly and we had no problems, English is not a problem at all and you do not need any Spanish knowledge. If someone doesn't understand you they are always accommodating.

Maevamigos (4) - very talented people and they had a lot of fun as well. Great team.

Food (3 1/2) - It was always great food and none of us got sick
The service staff always served drinks with the meals and were very friendly.

Bars (3 ) – Good bars, nothing special

MiniClub (4) - My 5 year old had a lot of fun there and enjoyed the couple of times she was there. Very safe place to leave your kids.

Tipp: Sometimes you get a big smile when you tip your waiter or cleaning lady. $1 means a lot to them and didn't hurt us, even though it is an all inclusive resort.

We went on the Turtle Tour which was very interesting for the whole family.
Manzanillo has air pollution problems due to the coal power generation plant. According to city official the power generation will be switched over to natural gas within two years, this will clean up the air scape.

We may go back in a few years.
