Location, Location, Location is what the Playa Mazatlan represented to us. Never having been to Mazatlan before, we did not realize the Hotel was in the heart of the Golden Zone. Actually, 40 years ago when the Playa Mazatlan opened was when the Golden Zone began. We would not take the all- inclusive option again as there is only one restaurant in the Hotel. There are dozens of others within easy walking distance. Most of the other guests were accommodation only. While our spacious room lacked a fridge, coffee maker and an in room safe, it was very comfortable and clean. We've never seen an older hotel so well maintained. The large restaurant is open to the ocean side with beautiful vistas. A walk along the beach led to the discovery of sewage outlets to the north and south of the hotel. Did not ascertain the level of sewage treatment as we then used the very well maintained pool just outside of our patio. Also, the water seemed pretty cold and storm warnings were up most of the time. A great place for surfers! Breakfast was the only buffet meal in the restaurant. Lunch and dinner were a la carte. Food was enjoyable. We've never had such fat shrimps. Better yet was watching the rather prosperous Mexicans conduct their breakfast and luncheon business and networking meetings in the restaurant. There were many very high powered business women at these events. Passengers from visiting Cruise Ships also came to the restaurant as part of their tour of Mazatlan. We enjoyed chatting with them. A weekly beach party and a weekly fireworks evening were the highlights of the entertainment. Our all-inclusive included the "Fiesta Mexicana" which takes place twice a week at the Hotel. Can only say that it did not compare favourably with a normal evening's entertainment at an all-inclusive Cuban resort. A small combo played each evening for dancing. The one bar seemed rather stretched to keep up everything. Also, with the mixture of guests one was forever having to sign vouchers. But the location made up for all the short comings. The hotel is at the north end of a 11 Km "El Malecon" boardwalk sea wall which runs to the port and the older part of the city. It's an exciting walk with the waves rolling in from the Pacific. An open air golf cart type vehicle, the Pulmonia" is unique to Mazatlan. They are ubiquitous, and along with the taxi cabs reasonably priced. We took the inexpensive half day city tour from the Hotel. The City is quite widespread and we would not have seen nearly as much on our own. Again, the hotel's location is great for shopping. The newer, modern shopping malls are only a short distance to the south east of the Hotel. Immediately to the north of the hotel are smaller malls with clothes, leather, jewellery, etc. In summary, the hotel is located in the heart of a vibrant Mexican city with little evidence of poverty or an over obvious military/police presence. The USA and Canadian Consulates are just outside the front gates. Tourists are incidental to the community instead of being the basis for the community's existence. We were somewhat puzzled by the favourable Trip Adviser Reviews before we stayed at the Playa Mazatlan. Now we can also understand why a 40 year old hotel is so appreciated by its guests. Many of whom come back year after year!
