My husband and I spent a fantastic week at this establishment, but be aware (1) there are no non-smoking rooms, (2) there are no junior suites with ocean view, and (3) they do not disclose this either in email correspondence, or on the phone when asked directly.
The rooms are better cleaned and disinfected than most rooms previously housing a smoker, but the odor can still be detected by the sensitive.
I spent 45 minutes quietly complaining about no ocean view. First I was offered a 1 bedroom at a higher rate, and was finally given the one bedroom with view at the agreed upon rate. All of this was handled quietly and politely by all parties.
That said I have nothing else negative to report.
The room was bright, cheery, and comfortable. The bed was hard even though it already had an egg carton foam pad. I called and the maids immediatly brought a heavily padded mattress pad, and we slept great all week.
The kitchen was well equipped with everything except an oven.
We loved our tiny balcony with two chairs, and the view was great.
There was no tub, but the shower was large, clean, and quite functional. We loved the two bathroom vanities in the one bedroom suite. The air conditioning worked great, and due to the time of year, we were able to turn it off a few times and open the windows.
Our maid, Alma, was our best maid ever. She did everything possible to take good care of us. All of the staff were friendly, cheerful, and helpful.
The property is absolutely gorgeous. There was a great selection of activities for all ages. We played Bingo one day. My husband enjoyed the pools and hot tub.
The short boat ride to get to the beach became tiring and the beach was nothing great, so we took the hotel shuttle to the El Moro. The beach access there is great. In addition, we fell in love with La Concha Restaurant at El Moro, and even went there early our morning of departure for breakfast by the ocean. They have a wonderful grilled ham, cheese, and pineapple sandwich, and they make a great fresh omlette at the breakfast buffet.
In addition, we went to the Mexican Fiesta at La Castilla, and it was great, as was the buffet. We also ate at Villa Italia. I enjoyed the brick oven pizza, and my husband liked the spaghetti and meatballs. It was good, but unfriendly. We did not do all inclusive because we do not drink.
My advice is to take a wad of ones for tips. We have never tipped so much in our lives, but the service was great and deserving, and everyone accepts American ones.
Be certain to take at least one ride in a pulmonia, open air taxi. The rest of time, the city bus is fine and cheap at $.50 for non-airconditioned, and $.80 for airconditioned. It will take you downtown to the market, (cash only, but the cheapest souvenirs), and also the cathedral. It will also take you to the supermarkets, and Burger King and McDonalds should you become homesick. The bell staff is a great source of information about buses and supermarkets, etc.
Our favorite restaurant away from El Cid was Panamas. Great breakfast! Our favorite tours were the Country tour to the Sierra Madre towns, and the Sunset Cruise.
You do not need to worry about exchanging money. You need very few pesos, and you can exchange at your hotel.
The beach vendors drive you crazy, but I must admit to purchasing from them. It was fun negotiating price. The time share sales people will actually follow you down the street, and even across the street in the Golden Zone. Just keep walking. We did one presentation to earn two tours, the Mexican Fiesta, and a breakfast. You could spend your entire vacation doing time share presentations, but you give up 1/2 day of vacation for each. A time share sales person even boarded our shuttle from the airport. We were so annoyed we refused to talk.
We found a salon, Christines, down the street from La Castilla, where you can purchase one hour of phone time to the US for $6.00. It is good for the week. They also have computers, but the cost is the same as El Cid, $1 for 10 minutes. Our cell phones did not work, it was expensive to phone from El Cid, and US phone cards do not work, so Christines was a good find.
We loved Mazatalan and would definitely return to Mazatlan and El Cid. It would be difficult to choose between the beauty of Marina as opposed to the convenience of El Moro or La Castilla.
