I stayed at La Siesta for five nights at the end of August of 2007. I chose the hotel because of its location near the historic center of Mazatlan and because of the price. If you are unfamiliar with Mazatlan, the tourist area (Golden Zone) and the historic center of town are several miles away from each other.
My overall experience was good. It offers a basic hotel room. My telephone and one light fixture did not work. However, it was clean and relatively quiet.
I have lived in Mexico, and I have traveled extensively throughout the country. I am also a Spanish speaker. La Siesta was typical of most (non-touristy) hotels. The only negative experience was a young man who worked at the counter who was extremely rude - perhaps the most arrogant [--] I have ever encountered in Mexico. He jumped the price of the room the additional night I stayed there, and he took glee in speaking to and about hotel guests in a rude manner. Everyone else at the hotel was great. Due to this one individual, I would not even consider returning to the hotel. To me, attitude is everything.
My recommendation: stay at La Siesta if you want to get a taste of traditional Mexico. BOOK ONLINE!!! Stay away from the English speaking male counter worker at all costs. If you have children or want a traditional tourist holiday - stay at one of the many Golden Zone hotels that have larger grounds and bigger pools.
