I booked a last-minute all-inclusive deal, and stayed at this hotel for 7 days. I read many negative reviews about this hotel prior to the trip, but it was too late to change the booking.
My all-inclusive deal was a joke,as there was a U$ 8 surcharge for all steak, shrimp and lobster items(which my tour operator did not warn me of).
There is only 1 restaurant and not 2, as stated in various brochures and websites.
There is no provision of non-smoking rooms.
The rooms are in a very-poor state indeed, with substandard features and amenities. House-keeping is erratic. The maid was more concerned about what I could tip her.
There are many much nicer hotels in the area for less money. All this hotel has going for it, is a great beachfront location. The rooms need a major refurbishment.

We spent a week at this hotel for the holidays. Our stay was okay, but
could have been better. This hotel was part of our package, but given a choice we would have stayed elsewhere.

First the pluses... the location is excellent. Close to shops, restaurants, right on the beach. The staff were friendly and helpful. However, the hotel seems a bit old and run down. The lobby area is very welcoming, but the rooms are old with problems. The ventilation systems seem faulty and the rooms were always damp and cold. In general, the rooms were also not that clean. Linens are old and dated.
Public areas are a bit grungy.

Housekeeping did come daily, but the service was mediocre. Towels were
not changed daily or towels were removed and no new ones left. The bathrooms were not cleaned consistently, nor the floors swept very well. We stayed in two different rooms during our stay due to availability issues and we found the same service problems in both rooms. We are not picky travellers at all and are okay with going with
the flow and letting some things go, but in all honesty I do believe that a hotel should have certain basic standards.

We loved Mazatlan and will return but not to Costa unless the rooms are updated and the service improves.

My husband and I first visited Mazatlan in 1997 with my sister. We had purchased a timeshare at Costa De Oro (dating at that time) and got married there in 1998 on the beach in front of the hotel. Many think timeshares are a scam but for us, it makes us take a vacation instead of just talking about it.
We have made so many native friends and even had our timeshare lady and favorite waitors in our wedding.
The people there remember you. They get excited to see you.
A store owner went out of his way to invite us on a city tour by him.
The hotel is very nice. I t has a beautiful pool overlooking the pacific. I really like that the beaches are open and that your not restricted to the beach just in front of the hotel. The bar is next to the pool. The rooms are very nice and clean.
There are so many things to do whether it's a big Fiesta or a Island Tour. Shopping? Lots of it.
We now have a 2 yr old and last January we had taken her. She loved the 0 depth pools and the raked beaches. They also hav plenty of activities for the little ones.
Need a new place to see? Try Mazatlan Mx. We love it!!

We just got back from a week stay at Costa de Oro. 7th floor with ocean view, room was clean and housekeeper kept us in bottled water. Have stayed there before and retured for 4th time. For those of you wanting a very private beach, this is not it. Lots going on which is what we like. Pool is great as is all the staff. Ask for Rudi, wait staff in Adobles, the resturant. Food was good, reasonably priced. Gus, Gus and Tequila's across the street had entertainment nightly. Had alot of fun at the Purple Onion, and Joes Oyster Bar. Ramon at the Costa put together a nice catamaran trip to see seals, banana boat, pl;ayed volleyball on one of the islands. Nice lunch and drinks provided. Loved Plaza Machada, old town, great places to eat. Wonderful side trips to Copala, Concordia, a tequila factory and La Noria. Ask Rudi at the Costa resturant!!
We love the Costa, staff are great, helpful and friendly. Remember to tip the housekeepers daily. There is a mission in town where you can make free phone calls to the states. You can also help them make sandwiches for needy and even visit the orphanage with them on Thursdays. They take food, clothing, etc to the children. Pulmonia to downtown about 5-6 dollars. Salud!

We stayed at the Costa de Oro towards the end of our stay in MZT, and we were pretty disappointed. We managed to get an ocean-view room, and it was roomy, but the beds were flimsy & uncomfortable. All of the linens always felt cold and damp--the ventilation was terrible. The property itself was dirty and the landscaping could've actually used some plants. The pathways were constantly wet & muddy, so it was impossible not to track it into the room. The food at the hotel was so-so, and the beach was very crowded, not at all private. The pool was incredibly crowded, and they never had enough towels or chairs, and the security was definitely lacking. I would recommend this hotel to teenagers/college students who don't spend a lot of time in the hotel room, not for people with families who care about amenities. I would not rate this a 3 star hotel; it was more like a Motel 6. I felt like I was staying in a slummy resort once I got beyond the front lobby. For a few bucks more per night, it is worth it to stay at the Playa Mazatlan.
