My husband and I recently returned from our Xmas stay at the Emporio Mazatlan. We found the hotel to be to our liking. It's located right on the beach. The hotel is shaped like a "U" with all room balconies facing pool/ocean. Very nice view. They had nice pool furniture and umbrellas but as usual not enough chairs for the amount of people.
The pool was cold - the ocean on the other hand was very nice. The beach is sandy all the way into the water and it stays shallow for a long ways out. They have additional chairs just outside their beach wall but they are in sad shape. The beach vendors hang around the beach wall but don't hound you if you say "No". The room we had sported 2 double beds, a large dresser, large closet c/w free room safe, color tv, coffee maker - makes 4 small cups (1st round of coffee is free - additional days are $14 pesos (+-$1.40) - less expensive than the restaurant, large shower with plenty of hot water, blow dryer and extendable magnifying mirror in the bathroom (for those of us ladies who need to get right up to the mirror to apply makeup). No fridge in the room. I had expected to find an iron in the room but there was none. A quick note to the maid in my pigeon Spanish and one magically appeared and I kept it for the whole week. We had excellent maid service. The room was kept clean, the towels were always fresh and the sundries were replaced daily. The water was fine to drink (we were assured it was purified) although we only brushed our teeth with it we had no repercussions. They do provide bottled water for you. A bottle is $16 pesos but if you go down the street you can get gallon for a few cents more. We used it for our coffee and drinking. The bar offers happy hour every day from 5-6 p.m. and from 7-8 p.m. All drinks 2 for 1. Drink prices and restaurant prices were reasonable. We only ate at the hotel twice as there are lots of wonderful restaurants within walking distance.
Our only real complaint was the Disco located 2 lots over. They played music until 4 a.m. and it was loud. Those Mexicans love their music and dancing. I suggest taking some ear plugs and turning up the A/C to drown out the bass. Other than the noise from the disco this hotel was great. Friendly and accommodating staff made the trip memorable and we'd go back in a heartbeat!
