“Good hotel and convenient location”

Hotel Catedral

We stayed at Hotel Catedral for 3 nights, just before Christmas, arrived there about 11pm tired after 2 long flights, and it was nice to get to the hotel, with their helpful receptionist and clean room.

We didn’t have a king size bed as I read in another review, but the room was big enough and the hotel is very well located, 2 minutes walk from the Zocalo, with its lovely Christmas lights. I found it much nicer to stay in the Centro Historico than the Zona Rosa, as you get to see lots of people moving about and small genuine shops and restaurants (instead of chains).
The decoration is very 70's and a quite tacky, still we didn't mind as the price is cheap, good service and clean place.
For U$45 a night I would say that is really good value for money. I would stay there again for sure.

There’s a nice restaurant called Café Tacuba near the hotel, the food is nice and the place is beautiful but be careful if you order a Margarita, as our waitress did not mention that the price of the tequila was not included on the drink, and charged 7U$ on the top of each drink. I speak Spanish very well and was not able to get out of it.

There's a hotel on Zocalo called Gran Hotel that is worth going into just to see the beautiful glass cealing.

“A hidden gem in the DF”

This hotel was such a gem. Only $45 US a night and it was excellently located behind the Cathedral and Zocalo. We had a big room, huge king-sized bed and huge bathroom with tub, which was kept immaculate. There's a spout in the bathroom for purified water--very convenient (though not over the sink, unfortunately) and the abthroom had a bidet, too (not our thing but thought others would want to know). They also provided two extra warm blaknets for the unseasonably cold weather.

The front desk was helpful. The restaurant was decent, breakfast was great, dinner was so-so. They have fairly cheap internet access, a bit under $1 US an hour. Also, they have a travel desk, though the clerk there doesn't speak English.

“tourists stay away: bad address”

Hotel Catedral

30 Nov 2006

Unless you want a rock concert right in your room, stay away.

It was a Thursday night; not a holiday, just an ordinary day. It started muted mid-evening, we put our earplugs on. But, the loudness increased; the decibels got so high you would have thought we had invited a rock band in our room. We had interior court, 2 blocks from the Zocalo. Wax ear plugs and sleeping pills were useless.

For that reason alone, the Catedral hotel is a bad address; at least for those who want to sightsee, not change rooms.

Our room was also run down; the furniture & carpet shabby, the mattress shot. The bathroom was reasonable.

We had reserved for quiet over a month ahead & checked in early.

So it leaves me wondering who is really raving about the Catedral hotel.

We can't say enough about the Hotel Catedral. While the rooms were average, everything else was exemplary. Both the hotel and restaurant staff were genuinely friendly, the price was right, the location near the Zocalo and Metro was ideal, and the view from the rooftop delightful. Some have commented on the police presence outside the hotel. Indeed, walking north of the hotel late at night is inadvisable. However, we felt very safe hanging out late in the Zocalo watching the Aztec dancers perform their impossibly perfect moves. Like most big cities, just be vigilant and use common sense.

This hotel is a very good option for travellers who like to stay at a good but inexpensive hotel in the city centre of Mexico City.

Please do not expect 4* stylish rooms or excellent service, but do expect clean, average rooms, a tasty breakfast a la carte, reasonable prices ..... just steps away from the cathedral.

I can highly recommend this place!
