We stayed at Hotel Catedral for 3 nights, just before Christmas, arrived there about 11pm tired after 2 long flights, and it was nice to get to the hotel, with their helpful receptionist and clean room.
We didn’t have a king size bed as I read in another review, but the room was big enough and the hotel is very well located, 2 minutes walk from the Zocalo, with its lovely Christmas lights. I found it much nicer to stay in the Centro Historico than the Zona Rosa, as you get to see lots of people moving about and small genuine shops and restaurants (instead of chains).
The decoration is very 70's and a quite tacky, still we didn't mind as the price is cheap, good service and clean place.
For U$45 a night I would say that is really good value for money. I would stay there again for sure.
There’s a nice restaurant called Café Tacuba near the hotel, the food is nice and the place is beautiful but be careful if you order a Margarita, as our waitress did not mention that the price of the tequila was not included on the drink, and charged 7U$ on the top of each drink. I speak Spanish very well and was not able to get out of it.
There's a hotel on Zocalo called Gran Hotel that is worth going into just to see the beautiful glass cealing.
