Hotel Castelmar is a treasure in the centre of the historic part of Campeche! We loved it. Housed in a charming old building that has had a complete refit.
We booked a few nights in the "Francis Drake" hotel but upon arriving there found it wasn't what we were looking for. After searching the city we decided upon this hotel as it was central, has a great pool and the rooms are newly decorated in a traditional style.
The pool is in a cool ochre coloured outdoor courtyard and has a nice sun terrace overlooking it. When sunbathing it feels secluded and private, plus the clean pool is a welcome cooler in the middle of the day.
The rooms are spotless and our junior suite was cleaned daily plus the bed was turned over for us in the early evening and chocolates left by the bed. What a nice touch we thought!
The room is decorated in nice new colonial furniture. Some of the rooms look into the courtyard and some overlook the street (a nice view though it can be noisy and the birds woke us up in the morning very early so be aware for light sleepers). Having stayed in a few Mexican hotels around the $100-$150 dollar price mark, this place was much better than most. It has reassuringly expensive feel without being too fussy. Our bed was huge and very comfortable. The room had a nice wooden wardrobes, a table and chair to enjoy the view from the room into the street and all that you would expect from a decent hotel.
We found all the fixtured to be above average and we always had clean glasses, new towels and spa type products in the bathroom for us. The shower was brand new, was huge and was really nice.
If you value your aircon, then be reassured that this is powerful and remote controlled. If anything we found it too efficient and used the central wooden fan on the ceiling a bit more.
If you like cable TV when you are away, our junior suite had this too and we had CNN North America etc. There is also an internet room downstairs that can be used.
The staff were friendly and helpful, getting me cork screws to open wine and being accomodating with us at all times!
Lastly there are some nice communal areas to enjoy a book in or soak up the lovely building. On the landing in front of our room was a huge sofa with nice lights and a tall candle stand.
Now for the downsides, which I am only giving to be balanced. Because the place is so newly refitted (indeed they were painting our room the day we arrived) you cant get drinks or food in the hotel. The courtyard would be the perfect place for a cool glass of wine, but this cant be ordered. Similarly, if you like a breakfast in your hotel, this is not yet on offer. We did buy a bottle of wine in a local shop, which the staff were happy for us to consume in the hotel. Secondly, none of the staff spoke English to a good standard, which may bother some tourists ( or entice others who like to get stuck into the language). I only found this an issue when needing advice on fiding a good sea food restaurant which I instead asked others for in the city. Lastly as I touched on, the hotel is next to a few trees on the road side that attract a vocal set of birds that leave their roost at 5.30am BUT the hotel is so fab that if thats a problem then get a room on the other side of the building as there are lots of them!
Overall I would urge people going to Campeche to book this place. I saw a couple of hotels when I went around the city to find a new one for us and non, aside from the very expensive Puerta Campeche come close.
Thanks for giving us a great stay!
