I meant to write this review right when we got back but time got away from me. We were at the Sun Palace from August 29th until September 6th of 2008. I wil go through all the pros and cons.
Getting through customs and the airport was a breeze on arrival. We arrived at the Sun Palace by 1:30pm. Since we went on the off season our room was ready right away.
We had room 521 - wow what a great room. Since they were doing some work on the end rooms we had no one next to us, and no one from above could see our huge balcony.
Friday night we lounged in the pool, set up our excursions and just relaxed. After returning to our room to get ready for dinner we found that our lights did not want to work - we waited an hour and were told we had to switch rooms, while the room we switched to was identical to our original room the view was not so great (the hotel to the left of us - the top of their roof). The next day they had fixed the light problem so they switched us back.
We on occation had a few light problems but they were always addressed right away and we were able to enjoy our room. Keep in mind the beds are extra firm. We let them know that it was extremely hard and they did put a mattress pad on the bed which helped some.
The restaurants were all fabulous - no complaints here. Always a lot to chose from.
Our room was always cleaned and our minibar always stocked. We never did find any towel animals even though we left tips for housekeeping. And we never recieved anything extra special for us celebrating our anniversary but the resort itself was so wonderful we didn't need to be pampered any further.
The spa was great, very relaxing and professional.
Because we were there on the off season (hurricane season) the hotel was only 25% full - most of the hotels during that time were the same way. So there was never a wait for anything. The nightly entertainment is a bit cheesy and even more so because there are not many people at the resort.
We also visited the Cancun Palace (great Japanese Steak house) and the increadably huge Moon Palace (keep in mind it is a $20 cab ride each way to and from the Moon Palace). The oriental restaurant there is really fabulous and they have a disco as well.
Ultimatly we enjoyed the Sun Palace the best - it is smaller and more romantic, no kids are allowed at the Sun Palace.
On several nights we were able to see Sea Turtles come on shore and lay their eggs. Then one night we were able to release about 300 baby sea turtles back into the ocean. It was truely a experience.
We did the chitchen Izta tour which was great to see but keep in mind it is HOT and ALL day. I ended up getting a migrane once we reached the ruins so that put a damper on the rest of the day. A good tip is to bring a wet wash rag from you room in a zip lock bag and pour your bottle water on it to help keep you cool. The other thing to keep in mind is that on all the tours/excursions they ask for tips throughout ...it can get annoying. We decided that one excursion was all we wanted to do with the resort. Across the street their is a place where you can take a tour where you rent mini speed boats and go snorkling...it was the most resonalbe thing we did...only $66 per person and it lasted about 2 hours. While we were snorkling we even saw 2 huge nurse sharks. A little scary but my husband loved it.
The Sun Palace was really a great experience....we would go back in a heart beat!
