We just returned July 3 from 6 nights at the Sun Palace and must say that it certainly lived up to the expectations set here. After reading dozens of reviews we were 100% confident that the SP was the right choice...and we were not let down.
Flight - The Cancun Airport was actually much cleaner and less crowded than many airports I've experienced in the U.S. Customs was a breeze. Probably took us less than 1/2 hour to get our bags and exit the terminal. We did encounter the army of time share folks just before exiting the terminal. We took a moment to talk to one to ask where our transfer was waiting (we had booked a shuttle with Best Day Travel). Was a bit of a mistake because he took the opportunity to bring us to a table to start his pitch. Before he could get into it though, we asked him several questions we had about Cancun (locations of places, etc.). He gladly pulled out a map and showed us locations of buses, shopping areas, etc.). And before he could get into his pitch we told him all we wanted was already included in our package (we actually did) and politely walked away. Our Best Day contact was right outside the terminal door. We were quickly escorted to the awaiting van. The drive was no more than 15 minutes to the hotel.
Room - We ended up with room #609. Direct view of the ocean...Outstanding! We were over the quiet pool which was probably a good thing. All the sixth floor rooms have a giant balcony, which was another big plus. We had breakfast on our balcony 2-3 times during our stay and found it a good place to relax and read a book on the huge cushion lounge. Waiting for us was a bottle of champagne on ice, along with a bottle of wine, some fruit, petit fours and the fully stocked refrigerator and drink dispenser. A few things worth mentioning: The bed is very firm. I had a little difficulty sleeping during our stay, so for those who prefer a cushion-top, be aware. Since there is no carpeting in the rooms or in the hallways, sound reverberates easily. Some mornings we were awakened early by slamming doors or people speaking loudly in the hallways. Light sleepers might have a problem with this, so be aware.
Food - Like most have said, the food is not gourmet but it is good, so set your expectations accordingly. We tried every restaurant except the Asian place. We were a little disappointed by one trip to the Mexican place late one night. We had to wait 20 minutes before being asked our order while there were only 2 other tables occupied at the time. After multiple waiters walked by including one who said his partner would take care of us, finally what appeared to be the manager walked by and immediately provided two plates of appetizers without us having ordered anything. We think he noticed our disgust as we sat looking around for someone to serve us. We think the spotty service had to do with the fact that we came by the restaurant well past dinner time, but still, it’s not like they were closed or they had to deal with many tables.
Drinks – No complaints and no sign of anything watered down. In fact, for the first time ever, I had to send a drink back to the bar (a Zombie) because it was too strong…nearly pure rum. If you’re a Red Bull and Vodka drinker, you’ll be sad to hear the bar does not stock energy drinks. However, they do sell Red Bull in the hotel shop. They had no problem providing a glass of Absolut (the best vodka they had) on the rocks to mix with a can of Red Bull I bought one night.
Beach – Easily one of the better beaches on hotel strip. The beaches all but vanish as you go north up the coast. As you walk out on the sand the lifeguard is quick to drag a couple chaise lounges anywhere you like and dig a hole for your umbrella. Soon after, a waitress came by asking for our drink order. I can’t think of much more you’d want. It seems like there were lounges available most of the day, even if you arrived after 2pm.
Pool – We spent most of our time at the Activity Pool. The staff there really tries to get people involved in volleyball, water polo, bingo, etc. We gave them a lot of credit for the energy they showed, especially in the heat! Lounges did fill up fast when we were there. Get there early or be prepared to pounce on one as soon as someone removes their towel. Essentially, a towel saves your lounge for you. We saw at least one person sandbag lounges by leaving a towel on one at poolside and then moving to another she had “saved” in a shady area. I don’t think that’s fair, because we noticed a few people looking for sun space, but ended up walking away disappointed.
Entertainment – We went to a few of the night time events they have (Karaoke, celebrity impersonator show). Again, the staff is super enthusiastic. The entertainment is pretty cheesy, but it’s lighthearted fun. Worth the time to sit back and laugh, especially if you’ve had a long day at Chichen Itza. We went to Coco Bongo one night. It was fun, but we really thought it would be more a dance place with occasional entertainment acts. It was really all acts, so FYI.
Trips – Went to Chichen Izta and Cozumel. Be prepared for a long, hot day at Chichen Itza. If you’re going on the guided tour, be sure to eat before you leave the hotel in the morning or ask the restaurant to box a breakfast for you (several people did). This is because we did not stop for lunch until after visiting the site, which was about 3:30pm. We were STARVING at that point after a long day of walking.
We also visited the Beach Palace and the Cozumel Palace while here. The first thing we noticed about those two hotels was…kids. We were so used to being in an environment at the SP without kids that the sight and sound of them (especially at the pool) was kind of surprising. It’s just another bonus about the SP that you may not appreciate unless you visit other hotels.
Hope this helps reinforce what many have already written about the SP and maybe point out a few other things to consider. No question we would return to the SP next time!
