Where do I begin on my quick weekend getaway to Grand Oasis Cancun? Starting with the positives of the resort, I will definitely say that the price was awesome. My boyfriend and I paid $207 per night for the both of us. We ended up with a room that had an ocean/pool view and it was a decent sized room. The room was okay and came with water, soda and beer in the mini fridge. For an older hotel, the grounds of this place are beautiful…Walking around the hotel you will notice the most amazing views of the beach and miles of ocean in every direction. I would say one of the best restaurant views was at the Coco restaurant…..it is surrounded by floor to ceiling glass on all sides and faces the beach. I was not a fan of the hugh lizards scampering around the grounds but I am not very nature friendly. We booked the Grand Oasis instead of regular Oasis which I found out has one major incentive, Grand Oasis guests get black wristbands, which I didn’t find out until my second day in Cancun allowed us all premium beverages. I have been to a number of resorts where it is advertised that premium liquor is included for an upgrade charge but always felt ripped off once arriving at the destination and being told that the so called upgraded liquor was really XYZ no name liquor and the good stuff was still an out of pocket charge. So I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the restaurant bars and hotel bars served all you can drink premiums like Johnny Walker, Absolute and Sauza. They don’t have the good stuff at the pool bars which is where we were mainly drinking on our first night so, I didn’t even know what I was missing out on until we explored the resort a bit more. I could have definitely saved myself a hangover. The breakfasts were good at the buffets and most of the al a carte restaurants were open during lunch which was a great option for people who don’t do buffets. Another good thing about this hotel is that none of the al a carte restaurants required reservations except the Mexican restaurant. We went to 2 different al a cartes in one night just to sample the menus.

On to the negative……..There was a really weird smell around the phase II pool; it reminded me of a public bathroom type of smell. That also seemed to be the most popular of the pools and was always jam packed with people and had music & activities. The pool on the opposite end of the resort, close to the Tequila bar was much cleaner. The main pool area was also in need of repair. There were lots of tile missing and all type of mold/mildew all around the side walls like it was in desperate need of a good scrub. I’m not going to even go into detail about people throwing (not spilling) their drinks into the water. Needless to say, we didn’t do the pool much. The main pool area was also very loud and crazy with a bunch of college and high school age kids running around and acting very spring breakish. If I had children, this is not the place I would bring them to. One positive is that I did see people swimming at night even though the pool officially closes at 6pm. I thought that was pretty good, for those who enjoy a good evening dip while on vacation.

The service at the restaurants and bar was good and attentive. The service at the front desk on the other hand was not so good. There was a lot of running around in circles just to find the desk staff person to help you. I was also tricked into talking to a time share rep for 20 minutes when all I was looking for was information about the restaurants…She showed me to the restaurant help desk person after I agreed to going to their breakfast seminar (I never showed up for it though). We also had problems 2 days in a row with the water in our room. On our first night I had to take a cold shower because only the cold water was working in our room. The desk did send someone out to fix the problem but it was after we were all dressed and ready to leave out for dinner. On our second night, there was no cold water, so our only choice was to either wait for the repair man to come or take a scalding hot shower. So, after waiting for about an hour and a half, the repair man came and fixed the water for us.

The beach was nice, though there were no beach umbrellas or palapas like most other resorts usually have, so we waited till late in the day to hit beach when the sun was not as strong. The sand was very clean and water was crystal blue. I would recommend bringing pool shoes because there are a lot of rocks on the bottom of the ocean, once you are in the water and I saw a few people with cuts/scraps coming out of the water. The ocean was also very, very rough and I lost a pair of sunglasses because of a wave taking me under when I was only in waist deep water.

Overall I would say that this hotel is a good value for the money. It was too big to explore in one weekend and I do think it had some great things to offer. I was there for the beach, the sun and the drinks and I did get all three.

My family and I just returned from a 6 night, 7 day vacation in Cancun and we stayed at the Grand Oasis. I was very leery after reading the negative reviews on this resort. I stayed at the Hilton when I was in Cancun in March and I am a 5 star kind of gal so was anticipating the worst when I arrived at the Grand Oasis. The main lobby was awesome, the concierge staff and front desk staff was great. The food was superb and the drinks even had too much alcohol in them for me...lol When I ordered a drink I would have to ask the bartender for light alcohol. The entertainment staff at the pool was great. Over all, we had a marvelous time. Life is too short for petty things, so be patient and open minded and have a great time if you stay at this resort. Be sure to eat at Dos Lunas and check out the VIP lounge in the main lobby....AWESOME!!!!!

“The good the bad and nothing ugly about grand oasis”

Grand Oasis Cancun

I just returned from my visit to Cancun and my stay at the Grand Oasis cancun and was overall pleased with the accomodations. I went with a group of three other guys all of us in our early 20's and we had a great time. Im going to break down the Hotel into the good and the bad

The Good:
The Hotel was georgeous from the beach to the hotel lobby and everythign in between. The food was above average for an all inclusive resort i have good to several others and the food at oasis was the best so far with plenty of options and food at all times of the day ( never had to wait more then 15 minutes despite some reviews). The staff at the restaurants and the bars were very friendly and always willing to help or give you alittle extra tequilla. The rooms and the grounds were clean and taken care of very well,

The bad:
Although mostly everything was up to par there were some problems. The comparason between the Grand Oasis and the Oasis can get confusing I was under the impression that if you were at the Grand Oasis you were suppose to be staying in the main pyramid as opposed to the four outter buildings, when we arrived we found our room in one of the four buildings and after i talked to the concierge he assured me that the building placment had nothing to do with the wrist bands. We made reservations for Careyas which is the nicest restaurant on the grounds only to find out that they had a very strict dress code and you needed pants and a collered shirt ( no jeans). Similar to the rest of the hotels and everythign in cancun they will try to get money out of you any way possible and even though its all inclusive you will end up spending more money then you expected.

Overall i would recommend this hotel to anyone dont believe all the bad reviews but then again dont go into the hotel expecting the ritz it is deffinetly a four star possibly low 5 star resort. If you have any questions feel free to contact me

“Hotel had its ups it downs”

We have just returned from a vacation at the Grand Oasis Cancun for the 4th of July weekend. The hotel definitely had its ups and downs during our stay. We will be trying out a different resort next time we go.

PROS:
Great location and the hotel looked awesome. The pool was very large and because of the size, did not seem crowded. Drinks had a ton of alcohol in them which is not usually normal for all inclusive resorts. The food (buffets) were good, except for no A/C (see CON below). Plenty of chairs available on the beach.

CONS:
No Beach service. Not even 5 feet out from the beach there are rocks on the bottom of the ocean which make it difficult to swim. In the buildings, there is no air conditioning which was strange because they had air conditioning vents. This made sitting down to eat uncomfortable. Our room's AC was set at 10 Celcius, but never got that cold. The "swim up bars" close at 5:00pm and there is really nothing open from 5-6 PM. The restaurants when open were often full according to their staff, but there were always empty tables. Check-in, Check-out took us each time around 45 minutes because they only had 1 person dedicated to do that. Our friends got stuff stolen from their room (cigar and underwater camera).

Four of us in our early 30's just returned from a 9 day stay at the Grand Oasis and we all had many complaints. First off...the food is pretty bad--we waited to eat at the mexican restaurant Sarape and we actually left our dinner to go to the buffet AGAIN because dinner was awful. We found ourselves always going to the buffet at Ibiza because hopefully you could find something edible to at least fill you up a little. We met other couples who were also looking for anywhere "good" to eat on the resort..none of us found any. We actually left the resort to eat for at least one meal the last 3 days we were there. Second....the black wristband vs. the purple wristband.--apparantly when you stay at the Grand Oasis and not just Oasis you get a black band which allows you to go to all the restaurants and bars...well the swim up bars are shared by both and when I say that they looked like a frat party full of 18 year olds I'm not exaggerating...they totally monopolized the swim up bars...and they didn't seem to be getting out of the pool to use the restroom....it actually smelled like urine by the one bar---I kid you not. Another complaint was that the resort advertises imported and domestic liquor..I think 3 of all of the bars had some better liquor---they actually had rum and tequila on the soda gun---where in the world do they make tequila or rum that comes in a box to use on a gun???? Disgusting---and if you didn't watch and tell them no, from the bottle they gave you whatever garbage they had. Let me just add that would be garbage IF they were putting any liquor in the drinks. We watched them make frozen drinks that they handed to 8 yrs olds and then serve the same blender full of drinks to adults without ever adding liquor to them---Third.....service was terrible!! and we all work in the service industry and we are such overtippers it is not even funny---we tipped and that still didn't help the service issue. Some bartenders actually were annoyed that they were serving you--I have NEVER experienced this is Mexico before--Forget about getting your mini bar filled---that required multiple phone calls to the front desk(we even left money for this guy) Another MAJOR PROBLEM---it was like bottled water was gold at this place...if you were at the pool (which has no poolside service so you need to get up and get a drink) there is no bar that will give you a bottle of water to take back outside with you into the heat and sun!! They all offer you a small plastic cup of water (again from the soda gun in some places)...no thanks! I finally complained and the one bar inside would give you a bottle IF they had any..we ended up buying at the shack by the pool--RIDICULOUS--this is all-inclusive???
Finally...one of the nicest bars in the place had a portion of it's ceiling COLLAPSE while we were sitting in it--cinder block and pipes came crashing down---let's just say they didn't reopen the rest of the week. Also---no iron in the room..so you had to call down and wait for them to bring everytime you needed it, no clocks in the room (yes your on vacation but I need to know if it's 8 or 10 o'clock) Our blanket kept dispappearing from our bed when they cleaned..had to call to have something besides a sheet on our bed... overall the food is bad, the service is bad, and it is full of 18 year drunk kids away from home for the first time---don't waste your money---there are a ton of better places to stay in Mexico!!!
