Where do I begin on my quick weekend getaway to Grand Oasis Cancun? Starting with the positives of the resort, I will definitely say that the price was awesome. My boyfriend and I paid $207 per night for the both of us. We ended up with a room that had an ocean/pool view and it was a decent sized room. The room was okay and came with water, soda and beer in the mini fridge. For an older hotel, the grounds of this place are beautiful…Walking around the hotel you will notice the most amazing views of the beach and miles of ocean in every direction. I would say one of the best restaurant views was at the Coco restaurant…..it is surrounded by floor to ceiling glass on all sides and faces the beach. I was not a fan of the hugh lizards scampering around the grounds but I am not very nature friendly. We booked the Grand Oasis instead of regular Oasis which I found out has one major incentive, Grand Oasis guests get black wristbands, which I didn’t find out until my second day in Cancun allowed us all premium beverages. I have been to a number of resorts where it is advertised that premium liquor is included for an upgrade charge but always felt ripped off once arriving at the destination and being told that the so called upgraded liquor was really XYZ no name liquor and the good stuff was still an out of pocket charge. So I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the restaurant bars and hotel bars served all you can drink premiums like Johnny Walker, Absolute and Sauza. They don’t have the good stuff at the pool bars which is where we were mainly drinking on our first night so, I didn’t even know what I was missing out on until we explored the resort a bit more. I could have definitely saved myself a hangover. The breakfasts were good at the buffets and most of the al a carte restaurants were open during lunch which was a great option for people who don’t do buffets. Another good thing about this hotel is that none of the al a carte restaurants required reservations except the Mexican restaurant. We went to 2 different al a cartes in one night just to sample the menus.
On to the negative……..There was a really weird smell around the phase II pool; it reminded me of a public bathroom type of smell. That also seemed to be the most popular of the pools and was always jam packed with people and had music & activities. The pool on the opposite end of the resort, close to the Tequila bar was much cleaner. The main pool area was also in need of repair. There were lots of tile missing and all type of mold/mildew all around the side walls like it was in desperate need of a good scrub. I’m not going to even go into detail about people throwing (not spilling) their drinks into the water. Needless to say, we didn’t do the pool much. The main pool area was also very loud and crazy with a bunch of college and high school age kids running around and acting very spring breakish. If I had children, this is not the place I would bring them to. One positive is that I did see people swimming at night even though the pool officially closes at 6pm. I thought that was pretty good, for those who enjoy a good evening dip while on vacation.
The service at the restaurants and bar was good and attentive. The service at the front desk on the other hand was not so good. There was a lot of running around in circles just to find the desk staff person to help you. I was also tricked into talking to a time share rep for 20 minutes when all I was looking for was information about the restaurants…She showed me to the restaurant help desk person after I agreed to going to their breakfast seminar (I never showed up for it though). We also had problems 2 days in a row with the water in our room. On our first night I had to take a cold shower because only the cold water was working in our room. The desk did send someone out to fix the problem but it was after we were all dressed and ready to leave out for dinner. On our second night, there was no cold water, so our only choice was to either wait for the repair man to come or take a scalding hot shower. So, after waiting for about an hour and a half, the repair man came and fixed the water for us.
The beach was nice, though there were no beach umbrellas or palapas like most other resorts usually have, so we waited till late in the day to hit beach when the sun was not as strong. The sand was very clean and water was crystal blue. I would recommend bringing pool shoes because there are a lot of rocks on the bottom of the ocean, once you are in the water and I saw a few people with cuts/scraps coming out of the water. The ocean was also very, very rough and I lost a pair of sunglasses because of a wave taking me under when I was only in waist deep water.
Overall I would say that this hotel is a good value for the money. It was too big to explore in one weekend and I do think it had some great things to offer. I was there for the beach, the sun and the drinks and I did get all three.
