Grand Oasis Cancun

I took my wife to the Grand Oasis from June 18 - 23rd for our 10th anniversary. The Hotel is beautiful. They keep the grounds, pool and hotel in excellent shape. The staff was very warm and friendly. We were originally supposed to get an Oceanfront room in one of the smaller buildings but were talked into a room in the Pyramid. Great choice! The smaller front buildings seem to house more 16 - 25 year olds. Our room was problem free and very comfortable. The restaurants were busy during the peak hours so go early. Drank Bottled water only, and had no problems with ice in drinks. We did use bottled water to brush teeth, though.

Only drawbacks were:
1. The Beaches were in bad shape. All photo's on the internet are from before hurricane Wilma in 2005, where they show white sandy beaches and a width of 80 to 100 yards. In actuality the beach is about 20 yards and dredged up granular sand. Where the waves break on shore is nothing but rocks. Saw a few people with bandages on their legs from scrapes, so be careful. Some rocks even had rebar sticking out.
2. The occasional roving bands of obnoxious 16 - 25 year old drunks. I guess anytime of year is "Spring Break".

Did the tour to TULUM which was fantastic and only took 3/4 of a day. Highly recommend eating at "Careyes" restaurant. GREAT meal. "Tunkul" was our second best dinner. "Ibiza" was great for breakfast.

Though this is an "All Inclusive" resort, we tipped wherever we went. The staff work their butts off for us tourists, and leaving a few dollars here and there provided not only a smile but an extra step when we needed something.

Tip:
If you want to go into town, take the bus. Much cheaper than a taxi. We went to Walmart to get shirts then took it to "Isla Mall" to shop.
If you are at Grand Oasis, pull your bottled water from the fridge every morning and take them with you or stash them. They will restock them for free.

okay honestly this is only the truth. Nothing personal but man these guys are rude i got there july 3rd made reservations for 4. 2 all included rooms ocean view. When we arived one room was ready the other room had to wait an hour. Fine i can take an hour we were on a connecting flight anyway had enough sleep so we walked around the view was HOT. Looks exactly like the pictures till you get to your room and the Firdge is locked. icalled up the front desk to get someone to unlock it took 5 hours for that to happen after 7 phone calls. Second NIght the 4th. My phone stops working and i cant call room service to get something to eat, i had to go down the hall to my friends room to place orders and then get questioned because im sending it to another room so had to wait in my friends room for 50 min+ for food that had already gotten cold. Burgers are not burgers they taste funny or something. Under my bed 2 of the legs were broken. The a/c was all that good in my room and great in my friends so good luck in what room you get. the door to the bathroom was suppose to slide. 2 Nights before i leave is (3rd-8th) my girl slips on her back hard because water was on the floor so they tell us because i stayed to take care of her and didnt call the front desk they did not take responsibility for what happen and tried to get us to pay the doctor 80 bucks. day before we left the 7th they came to fix the phone. When we were checking out they tried to get me to pay 30 bucks for 2 towel cards they never gave me. and they didnt wanna check if 2 cards were missing. had two security guards making sure i didnt leave till i paid!

Where do I begin on my quick weekend getaway to Grand Oasis Cancun? Starting with the positives of the resort, I will definitely say that the price was awesome. My boyfriend and I paid $207 per night for the both of us. We ended up with a room that had an ocean/pool view and it was a decent sized room. The room was okay and came with water, soda and beer in the mini fridge. For an older hotel, the grounds of this place are beautiful…Walking around the hotel you will notice the most amazing views of the beach and miles of ocean in every direction. I would say one of the best restaurant views was at the Coco restaurant…..it is surrounded by floor to ceiling glass on all sides and faces the beach. I was not a fan of the hugh lizards scampering around the grounds but I am not very nature friendly. We booked the Grand Oasis instead of regular Oasis which I found out has one major incentive, Grand Oasis guests get black wristbands, which I didn’t find out until my second day in Cancun allowed us all premium beverages. I have been to a number of resorts where it is advertised that premium liquor is included for an upgrade charge but always felt ripped off once arriving at the destination and being told that the so called upgraded liquor was really XYZ no name liquor and the good stuff was still an out of pocket charge. So I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the restaurant bars and hotel bars served all you can drink premiums like Johnny Walker, Absolute and Sauza. They don’t have the good stuff at the pool bars which is where we were mainly drinking on our first night so, I didn’t even know what I was missing out on until we explored the resort a bit more. I could have definitely saved myself a hangover. The breakfasts were good at the buffets and most of the al a carte restaurants were open during lunch which was a great option for people who don’t do buffets. Another good thing about this hotel is that none of the al a carte restaurants required reservations except the Mexican restaurant. We went to 2 different al a cartes in one night just to sample the menus.

On to the negative……..There was a really weird smell around the phase II pool; it reminded me of a public bathroom type of smell. That also seemed to be the most popular of the pools and was always jam packed with people and had music & activities. The pool on the opposite end of the resort, close to the Tequila bar was much cleaner. The main pool area was also in need of repair. There were lots of tile missing and all type of mold/mildew all around the side walls like it was in desperate need of a good scrub. I’m not going to even go into detail about people throwing (not spilling) their drinks into the water. Needless to say, we didn’t do the pool much. The main pool area was also very loud and crazy with a bunch of college and high school age kids running around and acting very spring breakish. If I had children, this is not the place I would bring them to. One positive is that I did see people swimming at night even though the pool officially closes at 6pm. I thought that was pretty good, for those who enjoy a good evening dip while on vacation.

The service at the restaurants and bar was good and attentive. The service at the front desk on the other hand was not so good. There was a lot of running around in circles just to find the desk staff person to help you. I was also tricked into talking to a time share rep for 20 minutes when all I was looking for was information about the restaurants…She showed me to the restaurant help desk person after I agreed to going to their breakfast seminar (I never showed up for it though). We also had problems 2 days in a row with the water in our room. On our first night I had to take a cold shower because only the cold water was working in our room. The desk did send someone out to fix the problem but it was after we were all dressed and ready to leave out for dinner. On our second night, there was no cold water, so our only choice was to either wait for the repair man to come or take a scalding hot shower. So, after waiting for about an hour and a half, the repair man came and fixed the water for us.

The beach was nice, though there were no beach umbrellas or palapas like most other resorts usually have, so we waited till late in the day to hit beach when the sun was not as strong. The sand was very clean and water was crystal blue. I would recommend bringing pool shoes because there are a lot of rocks on the bottom of the ocean, once you are in the water and I saw a few people with cuts/scraps coming out of the water. The ocean was also very, very rough and I lost a pair of sunglasses because of a wave taking me under when I was only in waist deep water.

Overall I would say that this hotel is a good value for the money. It was too big to explore in one weekend and I do think it had some great things to offer. I was there for the beach, the sun and the drinks and I did get all three.

My family and I just returned from a 6 night, 7 day vacation in Cancun and we stayed at the Grand Oasis. I was very leery after reading the negative reviews on this resort. I stayed at the Hilton when I was in Cancun in March and I am a 5 star kind of gal so was anticipating the worst when I arrived at the Grand Oasis. The main lobby was awesome, the concierge staff and front desk staff was great. The food was superb and the drinks even had too much alcohol in them for me...lol When I ordered a drink I would have to ask the bartender for light alcohol. The entertainment staff at the pool was great. Over all, we had a marvelous time. Life is too short for petty things, so be patient and open minded and have a great time if you stay at this resort. Be sure to eat at Dos Lunas and check out the VIP lounge in the main lobby....AWESOME!!!!!

“The good the bad and nothing ugly about grand oasis”

Grand Oasis Cancun

I just returned from my visit to Cancun and my stay at the Grand Oasis cancun and was overall pleased with the accomodations. I went with a group of three other guys all of us in our early 20's and we had a great time. Im going to break down the Hotel into the good and the bad

The Good:
The Hotel was georgeous from the beach to the hotel lobby and everythign in between. The food was above average for an all inclusive resort i have good to several others and the food at oasis was the best so far with plenty of options and food at all times of the day ( never had to wait more then 15 minutes despite some reviews). The staff at the restaurants and the bars were very friendly and always willing to help or give you alittle extra tequilla. The rooms and the grounds were clean and taken care of very well,

The bad:
Although mostly everything was up to par there were some problems. The comparason between the Grand Oasis and the Oasis can get confusing I was under the impression that if you were at the Grand Oasis you were suppose to be staying in the main pyramid as opposed to the four outter buildings, when we arrived we found our room in one of the four buildings and after i talked to the concierge he assured me that the building placment had nothing to do with the wrist bands. We made reservations for Careyas which is the nicest restaurant on the grounds only to find out that they had a very strict dress code and you needed pants and a collered shirt ( no jeans). Similar to the rest of the hotels and everythign in cancun they will try to get money out of you any way possible and even though its all inclusive you will end up spending more money then you expected.

Overall i would recommend this hotel to anyone dont believe all the bad reviews but then again dont go into the hotel expecting the ritz it is deffinetly a four star possibly low 5 star resort. If you have any questions feel free to contact me
