Stayed at the Park Royal from March 8-15th in a Presidential Suite. We were a family of 4 adults and a 12 year old boy. We had a wonderful time and I would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a laid-back atmosphere in which to soak up the sun, surf the waves and relax. The hotel lives up to the many favourable reviews others have written. It is impeccably clean, the staff are all very nice and the food was very good. Here are my thoughts by category:
BUFFET: Never mind the naysayers who didn't like the buffet. People who want mega choices at every meal should go stay at a mega resort! The food is of high quality and there was sufficient choice at every meal to please everyone in our party. Plenty of shrimp, fish and seafood (calamari, octupus, mussels, etc.) presented in varying ways (either as a soup, in the salads or on their own). The last day's buffet lunch they served the most tender sole stuffed with seafood! One day at lunch they had a huge New York slab of beef they were slicing up. Plenty of chicken dishes and mexican fare as well. The quacamole at the buffet was very tasty and it is the only place in the resort where you can get it.
A LA CARTE: We ate at the Italian restaurant 3 nights during our stay and each experience was just awesome. The grilled steak, the Mahi Mahi, the seafood pasta, the chicken parmigiana - all EXCELLENT! The antipasto/salad bar was most surprisingly good. The wines also very good and the waiters will make you special coffees if you ask - they are not listed on the menu. Very attentive service from the moment we walked in to the minute we left.
POOLS: Are on the small side but were never crowded. The deck chairs go quickly (in the prime spots) but there was never an issue finding somewhere to sit close by.
BEACH: Very nice - lots of chairs and loungers. A life guard is on duty and keeps a good eye on what's going on in the water. The surf is rough and not good for very small children, except perhaps on a very calm day (otherwise it is just too windy a location for the surf to be calm).
BARS: All good - the pool bar has some nice bankette type seating that is in the shade. The bar near the beach has a whole patio with shade where you can sit with your drink and the snacks you got from the nearby Le Jardin snack bar and watch the ocean and feel the cool breeze. The lobby bar is very nice as well, but too smokey for my liking. It is the only bar that is enclosed and that's why I noticed it so much.
ENTERTAINMENT: Practically non-existent. They do have some pool side activities during the day and they try hard, but there really isn't the space to do a lot of stuff. The PA system could use an overall. We played Bingo one afternoon, but didn't catch any nighttime activity at all.
CLIENTELE: As one other reviewer has mentioned, we were surprised to see March/Spring breakers at the hotel, but they really didn't detract from our holiday in any way. There is no nightime activity at the hotel so I'm assuming they left for other, more exciting environments since I can't say I ever was disturbed by any rowdiness, other than the first day they arrived and drank up a storm at every bar in sight! Other guests were couples, with and without children, some young and some old and some in-between. Lots of Spanish speaking guests at the hotel as well.
And last, but not least, the STAFF:
What an amazing group of people. Do not pay attention to those comments about communication being a problem. In the restaurants ( both buffet and a la carte) the waiters spoke very passable English, certainly much better than my feeble attempts at speaking Spanish!. They were there at your table within seconds (okay, sometimes a minute) to take your drink order. At breakfast they offer you toast and bacon for the table and juice (but you can always get your own juice from the buffet) and arrive with coffee (which they leave at your table) once they've served you.
TIPPING: We tipped more than we ever have on other holidays. They absolutely deserve it and are so thankful for whatever you provide so you don't mind giving a little extra. We were 5 people and in total we may have tipped about $100 for the week.
That's it - if you've got specifics to ask let me know and I'll try my best to get back to you.
