My wife and I stayed for 6 days in the Royal section, where it's promised pampering and individual attention and an excellent experience. It was good...but certainly not stellar, and with all of the glowing reviews, I expected alot better.
You walk in and are greeted and given an overview of the property and the 'experience'. And the closing is all about tripadvisor and how a great rating is so important to their job.
The room.... very nice. Clean, plenty of room, the balcony was clean. I'd give it a 4.5 / 5.
The food... the small buffet that was part of the extra service was always very nice, fresh and filled. (as was the bar). The open environment there was very nice and calming. (think a wooded area with koi swimming underneath the elevated pathways. 5 / 5
...food at the Palapa (private area)... small menu, and boring after a couple of days.
The guacamole was generally good, the shrimp pizza was very good, the steak was good, the hamburger not good. 3.5 / 5
...Sushi at Bana.... terrible sake...just bad. Not a very good sushi. Bland overall.
3 / 5. (I was hoping for super sushi...this wasn't it)
... Mexican at Mole... excellent waiter...who should have given me his card for tripadvisor...he was very good. The food was very good also. 5 / 5
...Tapas at Vento... better than ok, but not memorable. 3.5 / 5
...Carne' at the Market Grill.... Service was slow...suddenly at 7:30 there was noone on the floor with skewers of meat...NOONE! they were all setting up tables in the back. I thought I had put my red card (the stop feeding me card) on my forehead. My waiter came to the rescue when he realized I was PO'd and brought skewers. Everything ON the skewer was good. 4 / 5. (if they had not stopped, and as I said, it was obvious they stopped, it would have been a 5 / 5) (this was closed when we left to replace the flooring)
...Buffet at Naos... Really good most of the time. Very varied selection, everything was fresh and tasty. Breakfast / lunch / dinner were all good. Service was very good. 5 / 5
Things to do.... this has been mentioned alot... there is not much activity, and nothing noteworthy in the evening. We attended a tequila tasting / lesson given by their on site expert.
Tripadvisor mentioned, and at the same time told about how we are supposed to be 'listening', and many people don't, and blah blah blah. Only 10 people can attend this, and if I had waited for this and been excluded, I would be PO'd. They should add something to the calendar of events....limited to 10 people. I'll give this guy a 3.5 / 5. I did learn something, but don't tell me more than 1x how I am supposed to behave and interact.
Front desk...I didn't have much interaction, acouple of questions, and they were precise, not warm and enthusiastic. (I never saw the 'greeter' again after the initial information session...the one where Tripadvisor is so important...if cutomer experience is important... extend yourself...make a follow up call and see how I am, otherwise... who were you? and why would I say something positive about you in Tripadvisor?
The exclusive area.... my butler...Juan...didn't see him much (we didn't take the cell phone to summon him, not our style). He was supposed to reserve a palapa (or whatever the covered beds are called) on day 2. Didn't happen... went down there...never heard of us.
One note of excellence was Francisco, one of the waiters at the pool. SUPER EXCELLENT! bud...sadly...his area moves, so we had him 1x, the next day saw him, and found out where he would be for the following day, and when we went to reserve the palapa for the next day was told at the towel / palapa reservation hut that her was somewhere else, we went THERE, and he was where he said he would be, so he could not be our waiter. Sadly, for me, the waiter I did have on day 2 was missing in action alot, I got my own drink a couple of times (I know..gasp!), and the next day, I never saw the guy , and I made a complaint at that point to the keeper of the Exclusive area, who was very solicitous, and of course since I was leaving the next day, there was nothing to be done. She did make notes and did have another manager speak with us, but for me the damage was done.
---the pool...all of them, the private and the public, are very nice.
---the ocean...beautiful...rough surf, nad beautiful beach.
Overall...I see even more glowing reviews, so it must just be me. I just think if you are setting the expectation for excellence, and then keep pushing for positive praise (the bag porter at the end of our stay gave me a card with Tripadvisor emblazioned on it), you should be excellent.
Paradisus was good, maybe better than good, but the extra cost (not that much extra) private experience did not live up to expectations. I might go back if a deal came by (and I got a deal to come down) but I wouldn't bring a group of friends there.
