It's taken me a LONG time to write this review, but better late then never right? Anyway, this was our first trip to Cancun and we will definitely be back... and back at the RIU Cancun. I'd like to address the negatives that I read about before we went.
Beds:
Just like everyone says, the beds are hard as a rock. After reading the reviews (and being a business traveler and staying in different hotels all around the US and Canada 20+ times a year), I figured that people were just being picky. Nope. The beds are the hardest I've ever felt. Here's the interesting thing though. Both my wife and I had the best nights sleep we've had in a long time every night on these hard as a rock beds. We called down for a few extra blankets, which they put under the bottom sheet for us, and ended up sleeping like babies. Seriously, we almost wanted to go out and find some ridiculously hard mattresses when we got home.
Mini Bar:
Let me preface this part of the review by saying two things. First, I tipped the front desk guy $20 when we checked in because he was so awesome, and because I was hoping for an upgrade. I can't say if this helped or not because when I called about the mini bar, it wasn't him that I talked to. Second, I really like to drink. Both beer and water, so our fridge was in need of a refill every day, not every two days like their policy states. I would call the front desk every other day when it wasn't refilled and asked for it to be stocked. Not only did they not have a problem with this, but someone was sent to restock it within minutes EVEN WHEN I CALLED AT ABOUT 8 O'CLOCK AT NIGHT. If you drink a lot of beer and water like I do, don't rely on just leaving tips by the fridge. Call the front desk and ask for a restocking!
Room Smell:
I was worried about this since I read so many reviews about a nasty smell in the rooms. I did not experience this at all. I did notice a smell and assumed that it's what people were talking about, but it wasn't bad at all. It's a very humid climate, so there's going to be a different smell than you're used to. There is nothing any hotel can do about this, but I did not find it to be offensive at this hotel at all. As a matter of fact, when we got home, I hesitated to wash some clothes so I could still "smell Cancun" every once in a while.
Specialty Restaurants:
We only had one experience with a "reservation" restaurant. I wanted to try the Japanese restaurant because I love sushi. We set the alarm for very early one morning because I had read the reviews that you had to be in line by like 7. That night, the power in the room apparently went out sometime in the middle of the night and we woke up to a blinking 12:00 at about 10. I went down to the front desk to complain because we had planned on making reservations for that night. The desk man told us that there wasn't anything he could do about it, but just to show up at the restaurant about 10 min. after the seating time and see if they could squeeze us in. We did, and not only did they find a spot for us at the last minute, but we only had to wait a total of about 5 whole minutes. Awesome service!
Now on to everthing else:
The food was awesome. If you can't find something to eat every night at the buffet or La Mission, you're just not trying hard enough. I was worried about some reviews, but pleasantly surprised by the reality. My wife even said that the BBQ chicken at La Mission was the best she's ever had. Do try the ice cream at the buffet!
Entertainment during the day was great. They really do try their best to get everyone involved and if you don't have something specific in mind to do during the day, they will definitely give you something. I would have to say skip the nightly entertainment though. They try hard, but there is so much else to do in Cancun at night that it just falls kind of short.
Yes, the drinks are sometimes small and not very strong. And yes, they use really cheap booze. First, just ask for the premium stuff and they will glady give it to you. Also, ask for a double. They didn't even blink when I did and I got plenty strong drinks. Also, it's all inclusive. If you're not getting enough alcohol in your drink, you can get as much as you want, so just get another.
The beach was awesome. Nothing like drinking a beer or tropical drink while chilling out in the Carribean Ocean. Amazing! Also the water is so salty that you can just float in the ocean all day long.
The staff was so friendly and helpful. The grounds were kept amazingly clean. Overall, this was one of the best vacations of all time. I can't say enough about this hotel. Add the ridiculously low price for what you're getting, and you just can't get any better.
I could just go on and on about this hotel and Cancun in general. I won't though, but just let me say this. If you are reading these reviews to decide whether or not to stay at the RIU Cancun, don't even think twice. You WILL love this hotel as long as you're not expecting a 5 star. A 5 star it's not, but it's not priced anywhere near that either. If you go in with realistic expectations, you will be blown away. I guarantee!
