We just returned from 10 days at the GR Solaris, and found it to be wonderful in some ways, and mediocre in some others.
First the good; Our room was excellent, with a great ocean view. Housekeeping was great as well, keeping us supplied with towels, beverages, and towel animals at turndown most nights. We travel with our two teenage girls, and they loved the turndowns at night with the accompanying chocolates. The place was very clean throughout, with the exception of the upper pool in the afternoon. The concierge staff, especially Enrique'(Henry) was amazing, among the best we have experienced anywhere in the world. We also can't say enough about the lobby service people, solid all the way down the line. Most of the service people were friendly and helpful, and the shows at night were great, not Broadway caliber, but entertaining, especially for families.
The mediocre parts of this resort, in my opinion, are really a result of trying to cater to a younger, more outrageous crowd. There are three pools, upper, lower, and adult. There is only one bar to serve all three, and the bartenders, while competent, are somewhat testy, which is understadanble, considering the volume of liquor they are pumping out, and the number of drunks yelling at them. There is virtually no wait staff to be found to refresh your drinks, especially at the lower and adult pools.
The food, as has been mentioned here countless times, is spotty at best. The sit down restaurant, Marco Polo, tries too hard to be a gourmet experience, except that the food doesn't make the grade. The ambience is fine, as is the wait staff and the presentation, but the times we were there, after dinner, we shuffled off to the deli to find something we recognized to supplement our dinner. One night after Italian night at Marco Polo, I went back to our room with a bowl of Ruffles. And I generally don't eat snack food. There are enough options to satify your hunger, just don't hope for a good dinner at the end of the day.
The entertainment staff was okay, except for every sentence had to have either a sex or a tequila reference in it. I'm all in favor of both, but it got old pretty fast. Also, the lobby bar at night was so loud, we could hear the (bad) lounge band on the eighth floor.
There were a lot of little annoyances, but who needs that on vacation?

In my opinion, this is just a little fine tuning away from being an excellent resort. Get a few more service people, tone down the booze and sex references a little, and kick the food, (especially the dinner food), up a notch, and I would reccomend it strong

We stayed from May 25-29 and had a great time. The weather was great and there was always something new to do. Weather you were playing games at the activity pool or just soaking in the sun we had a great time. As for the food there was always plenty of it for us it just depended on what you were in the mood for. We were able to check in 2 hrs early and get started out at the pool for a great vacation. We even found the time to take in one of the shows offered there the last night which had a huge buffet along with it. If you enjoy the nightlife make sure to use your calendar to see what club they will be attending each night of which you will get transportation to and open bar till the wee hours of the morning. Our room was always clean and it wasn't very noisy even thou we were right by the elevators. I had read so many reviews that stated it was loud but it wasnt a problem with us. But I will say you can hear conversations in the other rooms especially when they come in from a night out and have alot to talk about but it wasn't that bad. Everyone was happy to help you with any questions you had while there and we even booked an excursion thru them which ended up being great. We enjoyed the underwater sub along with a trip to snorkel.

Stayed 4 days at the end of our vacation. May 25-29. Found this hotel to be 4 plus stars. Lets face it people gourmet restaurants are in Cancun however there are not found in all inclusive resorts. The GR does offer good food in a fun atmosphere. We have been to this area many times and have sampled different hotels and accommodations. Unless your name starts with Prince or Princess this hotel is perfect. If 5 star dinning is your goal why would you book in an all inclusive to begin with? The real assets of this hotel are the following:

1. Service seemed to be the number 1 priority. Not including the front desk. Check in and out was so so. Other than that you will not find more smiles and genuine service anywhere. All done without a hand out being solicited I might add.

2. Entertainment staff is unbelievable. Always on the go and treating everyone as if they have been friends for years.

2. The bar staff. In a word, William!! This particular gentle man is way under employed. He tends bar, worked as an interpreter between several Vacationers. His love of his work is so apparent!!

3. Food is much Better than most. All the breads were fabulous. The morning buffet offers everything most have ever have for breakfast with the exception of biscuits and gravy but I am willing to bet if asked for it would be delivered.

4. Rooms were very clean, nicely furnished, and maintained.

This is a safe and fun environment to vacation. A great place that will escort you to the legendary Cancun nightlife and offers total relaxation with every choice in between. Its up to you.

The vacation sales people are present and do offer you the opportunity to buy. They are not the obnoxious high pressure people found elsewhere. The amenities found here sells this Resort if interested.

We just got back from a 6 day/5 night stay at the GR Solarus in Cancun.

We were headed to Cancun to attend a wedding and decided to make an extended stay for vacation. The wedding and reception we attended was held at The Ritz Carlton Cancun. While it was nice, it just isn't our style. We were sooooo pleased with the GR Solaris. It was right up our alley.

Our room was nice and clean. Each time we left our maid some pesos or dollars, we received a newly constructed towel animal! Very cute. Bathroom was clean as well. The only issue we had with the bathroom was that the drain in the floor was giving off a methane gas smell and at times was pretty stinky. We weren't in the room that much, so it really wasn't too much of an issue.

Just as others on here said, the hallways are tiled and therefore you get to hear all of the annoying drunks coming back to their rooms in the early hours of the morning. They woke us up each time but alas, we fell back to sleep.

Definitely get up early and get out to reserve a lounge chair by the pool, especially if you want to lounge by the pool bar pool. These are the most popular chairs. We went out no later than 7:15 each morning to get chairs and had no issues. ANd if you want an umbrella eventually, you will want to do this. That sun gets really hot!

Pools:
Pool bar staff, especially William, are wonderful. If you are hanging out by the bar, the moment you finish your drink, they have a fresh one waiting for you.
The lower pool (volleyball) is a little more quiet than the pool bar area and very nice.
The Adults Only pool is fantastic if you want something a bit more quiet. You can hear the waves breaking here and it's fabulous!

Staff:
Not enough can be said as to how friendly the staff are. Everyone is so nice and helpful. The activities staff, the men and women who get the pool crowd into competitions, dancing and just about everything else are WONDERFUL! They are fun, upbeat and a lot of fun. If they ask you to participate in poolside activites just DO IT! We did and had a blast.

Food:
The food was better on different days for me. Friday nights they have lobster tail which was quite good. Breakfast was my favorite because of the omelette bar, etc. How can you go wrong with breakfast? Marco Polo, the 'upscale' restaurant was just okay. They have different themes each night which determines what will be served. Overall the food wasn't bad. The nacho chips, pico de gallo and guacamole were OUTSTANDING! I don't eat a lot of meat, so it was a tad difficult to NOT get bored each day with the food.

Beach:
The sea was so completely beautiful. 3-4 different shades of blue. When we first arrived it was VERY rough but in about 2 days it calmed down to the Caribbean Sea you see in pictures. The water was gorgeous.

We would 100% stay at the GR Solaris again. I definitely recommend it.
