On my way to Market 28, I envisioned my self haggling for bargains and buying tons and tons of goods, but I was disappointed with my experience there. First of all, it was extremely hot and so the first thing I did when I got off the bus for scramble for shade. Inside Market 28, there was a plethora of bazaars and shops, but none with air conditioning or some type of ventilation, so the discomfort of the sweltering heat shortened my time at the market.
We made our way to the food court, which is divided into two sides, one side served seafood, and the other side served tacos, soup, etc....Food was good and authentic Mexican. Not TexMex like I am used to but still I really enjoyed what I had.
After lunch, I hit the shops, or rather, the shops hit me. At every corner and every store that I entered, I was encountered by a nerchant to buy this and buy that. If I so much looked at an item in passing, I was hustled to buy it. No biggie, I understood that this was part of the shopping culture. However, when I turned down a price or haggled for a bargain, I was insulted by a few merchants. One told me I was drinking too much tequila and another told me I was looking for a miracle. The one that really got me (-) was one guy who made a racial comment. I'm Asian but I know a derogatory Spanish comment when I hear one. Needless to say, my shopping experience here wasn't great and the goods weren't that much cheaper than the shops on the main strip. It really wasn't worth the trip in terms of shopping, but for what it's worth, I'm glad i had a chance to experience some of the downtown culture, sans the insults.
