Our family of 5 just returned from Cancun after staying at the Great Parnassus. We vacationed with another family. Our kids were all boys, ranging in age from 6 to 16. There was something for everyone and we all had a great time. No rowdy spring-breakers, and there was plenty to do. No one got sick, the room was clean, and the GP was huge (loved the open-air lobby), good for exploring, w/o worrying about the kids' safety. The staff was superb and so friendly and attentive. Kudos to the wonderful "Entertainment Team" of young people: Roberto, Jonny, Carlos, Morgan (I can't remember the rest of their names) - just great and fun with everyone - this hardworking team supervised the outdoor games of water volleyball and basketball, water aerobics, poolside trivia games, in addition to mini-golf and ping-pong tourneys - as well as emceeing the nightly shows - what a great group - you guys made our stay very special! Pool was Fabulous - the three-tiered pool was amazing; even though it was crowded at times, there were always free lounge chairs. The waterpark was great, too. The food was quite good and better than I expected, lots of choices. NO swimming at the beach unfortunately! Too rocky and surf too rough, but the water was beautiful. We took a day trip to Isla Mujeres where we snorkeled, zip-lined, lounged in the hammock garden and took the lovely walk to its eastern tip - the ferry ride was fun as well. The only negative thing I can remember is that we arrived at the Great around 10 a.m. and could not get into our room until 3:00 p.m., so we had to hang around the lobby and wait, that was a drag. We went to eat at the Magnus buffet and the kids changed into their swimsuits and swam while we waited. Other than that, it was GREATT!

My family of 4( with 14 & 16 year old) stayed for a week with another family and had a wonderful time! Check in was a breeze & we were never pressured by time-shar people.

For the guys:
Dos Equis on draft. Corona is considered a sub par beer by Meixicans

Food:
Unsure how people are complaining. Fresh fruits & veggies, self serve beverages. Grill stations that cook on the spot, rather than hours old buffet food.
The restaurants are fine if you don't mind a long meal. The food is not that different from what you can get at the food court. Your choices are Mexican, Oriental, Seafood, Deli. Poultry and more. Not sure what some people eat at home, but I'm happy with no cooking for the week!
Do not miss the Creperie. Good ice cream & waffles.

Rooms:
Simply wonderful. The largest & most comfortable that we have had in our Mexico, Dominican, Jamaica & Aruba travels. I do recommend requesting the "odd number side"-non-Hilton so that you can leave your patio door open & enjoy the sound of the ocean. Yes, you have to wait for elevators occasionally. This is vacation, why hurry?

Drinks:
They are fine. If you request Absolut or Bacardi you get it. I think some people get upset because they are misunderstood by the bartenders, order another if you don't like what you got. These guys work awfully hard all day. If you don't think your getting enough liquor try the Cerveza.
Loved the Red Eye, Dirty Monkey & Mechilda.
I would recommend bringing a Go-cup as it's easier to order 2 at a time. Lines can be long at peak times.

Housekeeping:
Wonderful. Tipped a few dollars each day, requested extra water & received it. Room was immaculate. Occasionally there was a slight odor from the drain. Just pour a cup of water down it and it's fine.

Beach:
Not the best. There are alot of rocks and the ocean is wicked in Cancun. Be careful. However, walking up the beach each way this is the norm. I think the hurricane eroded alot of sand.

Pool & Activities:
Plenty ! There was always room in the pool & the activities staff does a great job-very friendly with adults and kids. The pool was cool but it's 90 degrees so it felt great. The boys loved the basketball games. Enjoy sitting on the lowest level & watching the waves.
If the kids get on your nerves, head up to the adult pool. It has a great view of the lagoon and afternoon sunsets. Our favorite bartenders were there (Aldo & Esqueil)

Bars & Entertainment:
Everywhere. The teenagers enjoyed the karaoke & shows. The workers here do a great job ensuring no "Spring Breakers" get out of line.

This hotel is a great value for all that it offers. One other review mentioned not accessing the outside from any of the restaurants or food court. This equates to no flies around the eating areas and I think that is fantastic and worth the walk. Flies/bugs are one of the biggest complaints at resorts with outdoor eating.

Vacation is what you make of it, you're in another country so enjoy what they offer you and attempt to speak their language.

If you are a family this might be your place if you are prepared for a few disappointments. Took our vacation March of last year 2008. We had the top of the line room. Would I come back? I don’t think so, too many screw ups. I am pretty well traveled. I have stayed in many 5 star hotels. The web site that I booked this off of gave this hotel 4.5 stars and I would rate it more like 3. We had the ocean suite; it comes with balcony and a jacuzzi on the balcony facing the ocean. Check in, I arrived one day ahead of my girlfriend. Check in was slow and I was glad that she was not there. That night I ordered room service 3hrs later no food, I called back canceled went down stairs had dinner. On the day she arrived I had to get her an arm band. I had to wait behind others at first till one of the hotel staff spotted my arm band and asked if she could assist me. I explained that all we needed was an arm band for my girl. This took 45 min

The Room was great, exactly what I had wanted. The bed faced an entire wall of glass over looking the ocean. The bed was quite hard, I can sleep on that but my girlfriend can not. I called room service and explained the bed was way too hard. They suggested that we put blankets on the bed, we agreed to try that and they said they would have them sent right up. We actually got the blankets the next day after I complained again. The bathroom was suppose to be hi-tech with this really cool shower that had steam, mist, rain mist, all kinds of different environments and was easily big enough for my girlfriend and I to enjoy together. However none of it worked, except the regular shower. The view, that is what I was paying for was great; five floors up, Jacuzzi on the balcony that we used every morning and every night. Well we used it after the hotel maintenance came up and fixed it. We were there 7 days and not once did room service bother to change or drain the water or scrub the Hot tub, I did this myself everyday sometimes twice per day. Room mini-bar was only stocked with 4 beers every other day. Lets see I am paying $500.00 per day for this room, this is not quite what I expected but it is all inclusive so maybe I am being too hard and not figuring things fairly hear but for $500 per day I would expect everything in the room to work, I would expect the bar to be stocked. I would expect the room to be cleaned every day, they missed twice.

How about the rest of the Hotel? Well I was looking for something romantic, which also means quite. The Hotel is very loud, mostly because it is built like a huge mall. Everything is marble but I understand that, hurricanes would wipe out carpet all the time. There are lots of families here, so kids are every where. I have nothing against kids but mine are grown and now days I look for something a bit calmer. Not enough elevators get, some exercise use the stairs. The hotel pools are nice. Our room was above the main infinity pool. The hotel like many resort hotels provides entertainment everyday at the pool. So every morning we got Ola! At 9am. The early morning exercise class began at 9am followed by the DJ’s commentary on what was happening that day. I am not complaining too much about this as it became our alarm clock. We would hear the beginning of exercise class the two of us would climb out of bed and walk over to the balcony to wake up, no need for clothes know body can see you on your balcony unless you stand at the rail. So nude sunbathing is cool and any morning activity you would like to do in the Jacuzzi is cool also.

Breakfast, two ways to get it, either in a sit down restaurant or head to the buffet. Most people go to the buffet that’s why we headed to the restaurant. Many days the GF just sent me down to get fruit and coffee and I brought it back to the room. Oh every night we filled out a breakfast form to have breakfast delivered, it made one time. Lunch at the pool your basic grill stuff, expect lines. There are a couple of restaurant open inside though but you can not wear beach attire except at the buffet. The food is just average. Drinks during the day. If you really want to drink sit at the pool bar, if you are out around the pool you will get most of your own drinks, they are weak of course. The beach was not bad, but there were a lot of big rocks. My girlfriend had never been to the ocean, she is a mountain girl from Canada. It took her awhile but she was determined to get in the water, the waves were pretty rough every day she had no idea just how much power a two foot wave has. I had to catch her as she fell because there are rock slabs you can not see under the water and she almost hit her head, all I can is be careful if you are not experienced playing in the ocean. There will be a parachute ride everyday and Jet Ski guy on your beach everyday if you would like to do that. Be advised the seat for two on the parachute ride has no seat belt easy to fall out.

So how was dinner? Many different restaurants but really the feeling you get is a food court at the mall and about that loud also. I was not happy. The food at dinner was only a little above average. The Japanese steak house and the Italian restaurant were the best. We did not eat in the French all I had were blue jeans these were not acceptable. The night life, go some place else for real night life. The bars are ok to get started but are pretty boring after awhile. The only good part is that as the night progresses the bartenders are drinking also and your drinks get better because the bartenders get drunk.

All in all for a romantic get away this was not so good. For a family well it looked like they were having fun, but we heard many people having problems with there rooms, not getting the room they paid for, bathroom not working right, AC not working. This is not because the staff was unfriendly or incompetent. The staff was great very friendly always tried to help. Hotel management does not have enough people hired to handle the amount of customers they have. Service is crappy because there are not enough people to help.

The best part of the whole trip was the fact that our room faced the ocean, and we watched ships go by in the night as we sat in our hot tub and enjoyed the view and each other.

We went to Cancun during spring break. Truthfully, I was nervous about staying at the Hotel Zone during spring break because we are not big drinkers and did not want to expose our girls (ages 15, 12 and 9) to lots of drunk teenagers and/or adults behaving inappropriately. Our travel agent told us the Great Parnassus would be great for us--and she was right! We saw no drunks or inappropriate behavior. Our room for 5 people was large and roomy. Our girls slept in an area walled off from the main room with bunk/trundle beds--not roomy, but acceptable. The bathroom (separate toilet area) and closet space was great--very big and comfortable. Everything was clean and relatively new. The maid service was perfect--we tipped her each day!. We did request an odd number room since we were told that it was quieter (even number rooms can hear the humm from the Hilton's maintenance facility). We were on the fourth floor which was perfect. I would avoid the first or second floor--more noise.
There are many choices for food. We ate breakfast and lunch at Magnus--the big food court each day. The food court isn't like a food court at the mall. This food court was wonderful. There are 12 different stations each with a different type of food. Example: Fresh Fruit Vegetables Grilled Oriental Pasta Deli Mexican Seafood. The food was very good and a great selection. Our girls loved the desserts. We ate dinner at Big Bens, Portofino, Manhattan, Magnus, and the Japanese restaurant. We liked Portofino's and Magnus the best. The Manhattan and the Japanese restaurant were only O.K. There are lots of bars at the resort. Each of us probably got 4 or 5 drinks without alcohol each day. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the free drinks--strawberry daiquiris, miami vices, pina coladas and our favorite-- the mango slush with strawberry--only available at the bar near the lobby. Taking the advice of a previous guest, we took 100 one dollar bills for tips and we used almost all of them. The workers really appreciate the tips since their salaries are so low.
The ocean is incredibly beautiful. I have never seen water as blue as this water and it is amazingly clear. However, you may not swim in the ocean at The Great Parnassus. The hurricanes have washed away much of the sand on the beach leaving big rocks and boulders sticking out of the water. We love to play in the water so we took the bus (7.5 pesos or about 65 cents each) to the Cancun Palace (probably 3-4 miles away). There is a construction road on the north side of the Cancun Palace that we walked along to the beach. The Cancun Palace has an area roped off that is safe to play in. It was worth the inconvenience of the bus trip and the short walk--the ocean was great! We did this twice.
The pools at the Great Parnassus Resort were wonderful. The girls liked the pool with the slides best because the slides are fast! We also played putt-putt, ping-pong, and tennis. The hotel has plenty of activities to keep you entertained.
We took an excursion--The Jungle Tour--and loved it. From the Blue Ray Marina we got in two small boats (that we got to drive) and followed our guide through the Mangroves and then out into the ocean. We tied up our boats in a Marine preserve and snorkled for about 45minutes. The snorkeling was cool. We saw lots of coral, plant material and many fish including lobster and a baracuda. The Jungle Tour was lots of fun. It cost $65 for adults and children are half price.
We also went shopping two evenings. The La Isla Mall is a beautiful outdoor, modern mall--much like you would find in the U.S. but prettier. We enjoyed shopping but it wasn't real exciting. My children did however get in this big blow-up ball (like a hamster ball) on the small river flowing through the mall and tried to balance themselves in the ball and roll it on the water. It was hilarious to watch them stand and fall. We also went to the flea market. The flea market is a market--Mexican style. This was an experience. Everybody was trying to sell us something, Lots of bartering. If you have never been to a flea market it is worth experiencing.
Our vacation was wonderful! Good, clean fun in a comfortable and safe family environment!

We were sent here from the Golden Parnassus when it was "overbooked". My review will be objective since they had nothing to do with the overbooking. It was a on OK place and I can't say we were blown away by anything. There were even some problems that were so annoying because it was so hard to get them fixed at the hotel.

Check in
The lobby is a cool looking open air room with couches and tables. Its very large with lots of people all over the place. This took longer then it should have taken. You are standing there and they are punching all sorts of buttons on the computer. They gave us a map of the hotel but really didn't explain anything or make you feel very welcome. Then they hand you an envelope with a TV remote sticking out, towel keys and lock for the safe.
Our room wasn't ready yet so the bellhops checked our luggage but didn't bring it to our room when it was ready. We had to go pick it up.

Room
We were given a ocean view suite with an in room fridge and a slow-to-fill jacuzzi hot tub near the window. It had a view of the ocean and also the large air handlers from the Hilton next door which were very loud. I guess the upside was they were white noise for the whole night. The balcony on the side of the building was big enough and had a table and two chairs. We could see both the lagoon and ocean. The whole room had tiled floor and was very clean. The queen bed was comfortable.

Bathroom
Also very big and very nice. It had a nice big shower that we had no problem with hot water. The biggest problem was the hair dryer. It shut off after a minute (overheated?) and we had asked 6 times to get it replaced. Everyone just says "yes" but then nothing is done. Even the ones that promise it will get fixed do nothing. Finally after we stood in the lobby complaining and telling them that it must be replaced in the next hour did they finally get it done.

TV
The TV had a good amount of channels and a lot were in English with Spanish subtitles. It was a nice flat panel on the the wall.

Pool
There were 2 pools. One closer to the ocean and the adults only pool on the lagoon side. Each were ok. The main pool was very crowded. The adults only pool would become a little more crowded after lunch when the sun would set on that side of the property. The main pool had activities about every hour. Some of adults and some for kids. The cocktail service was pretty much non existent. They had one server that seemed to never make it to my side of the pool. I had to go get all my own drinks. Forget about getting an umbrella unless you are out there 1st thing in the morning for the 5-6 umbrellas they had. There were pergolas that provided some shade and were easier to come by. We never had a problem getting a chair - we got outside by 9ish.

Beach
It was very small and rocky. There was never a problem getting lounge chairs at the beach.

Food
They have 9-10 different restaurants at the property. Overall I thought the food was average. Nothing was spectacular and nothing was really horrible. You would have some good meals but nothing great. There were a few times we had to wait for a table. The good thing is since it paid for my wife wanted one restaurant one night and I wanted a different one so we started at hers then went and I had dinner at mine. Things the kids would like, like burgers and fries were good.

Staff
I wasn't blown away by most of the staff. You would find some waiters that were really good and then some that brought you food then you never saw again. Everyone we came in contact with spoke good enough English to take your order and answer some questions.

Bar staff
I was not impressed by one of the bartenders. They were working hard with a lot of orders but most wouldn’t even look up at you and had surly attitudes. I read all these things that said tip them well and you will get great service, well I was tipping well and it got me nothing. So much so I stopped tipping them to see if anything changed and it didn't.

Entertainment
They had nightly entertainment and it was pretty good. The shows were an hour or so and a different one each night. Some things were cheesey but it was entertaining. There is nearly nothing fun to do at night! There is a karaoke 'bar' filled with tweens and teens, an adults-only bar with about 6 people playing pool or cards, and an entirely empty 'disco.' This is nothing like a couples-only AI where you'll meet people and hang out at the bars.. it's very, very quiet.

Checkout
This was the best thing. We had a late flight and you could checkout of your room and stay at the resort until you had to leave for the airport. So we checked our luggage and were able to spend the day at the pool and eat lunch and dinner.

The hotel was dead by 10pm each night. We walked down to the disco one night and we were the only ones in there.

Overall
It was an OK resort. Some problems and some things were average. If I got some amazing deal to stay there again I might but it would have to be a steal otherwise I would look elsewhere. It was so frustrating to get that one hairdryer changed it really annoys you. Most of the staff left something to be desired for people that are supposed to be working for tips.
If you are traveling without children I'd suggest an adults only resort where there will be less commotion at the pools and restaurants.
