We had stayed at the Royal in Playa del Carmen twice, so we figured we couldn't go wrong with the same in Cancun. We were right! We had booked Royal Junior Suite Ocean View mainly because you could choose your room. However, we quickly found out that we could not choose our room unless we were Royal Ocean Front or better. No biggie, as once we were there we found out that every room is Ocean Front and has a balcony as well! We were whisked away to the 6th floor concierge and were given Room 630. It was perfect, but had 2 double beds. We checked back with the concierge, but he said the hotel was full and we could possibly change to a king bed the next day; but the room was really nice and once I was unpacked, I was not packing up again, so we kept the room. We did get to select our pillows (which we never used, as each bed had 6 pillows on them already!) We also were able to select what time we wanted our room cleaned and we picked between noon and 2pm. The beds were probably the most comfortable I have ever slept in! Never used the robes - but I did walk around in my slippers! LOL!
Lobby bar is wonderful, overlooking the pool area and ocean. Swim up bar - perfect - especially Baak, our bartender! Fun drinks as well as the usual liquors. Although we noticed some people never got out of the pool..... 24 hour bar was always stocked with Rum, Vodka, Crown, beer, soft drinks, pretty much anything you might want. Sometimes there were onion rings, wings, chips, quacamole, queso. None of it very good, but will do in a pinch!
We only hit Spices for breakfast, but it was good. Try the omelets! What is it about bacon in Mexico that tastes so incredible? Ate at Asiana first night - pretty wonderful, although my ribeye was kind of tough - should have ordered chicken. Be sure to sit at one of the tables where the chef does the show. It's also a fun way to meet other people!
Maria Marie's - We went with the Mexican menu items and loved them! I told the waiter that someone had told me their chicken mole enchiladas were good. He said they did not have those on the menu. He later came by the table and said "I have something special for mama!". Now, I'm not a mama, but when he served us, he had had the chef make the enchiladas special for me. Now, that is service! We could have just ordered a couple of appetizers and that would have been plenty!
Tapas - don't bother. We went with a group of people and ordered several things. Everything looked the same and all of it was small pieces of bread spread with something fishy. Not at all what we ordered. Plus, it is in the same restaurant as Maria Marie's, so you don't really feel like you are in a different restaurant.
Pelicano's was a great lunch spot right by the pool and on the beach, although we were kind of wanting burgers or club sandwiches or nachos. They did have pizza which we did not try, but I loved the fajitas.
Spazul - I had a deep tissue massage. Never again! LOL! She was too rough on me. I would definitely do it again, but I'd get a relaxing massage next time. Everyone we encountered was so nice! Oops, how can I forget about Raphael? You will no doubt meet him - he is the Beach Butler! He can shine up a mean pair of sunglasses too!
We are already planning our trip back to the Royal Cancun or Royal Playa for October.
