First time to stay on the island. Had a great 7 days there. We wanted a property with beachside access/service & couldn't have been happier. The weather was crummy for the 1st 3 days due to tropical storms, but the restaurant staff were eager to make dining enjoyable & the hotel staff were constantly sweeping away the water so it wouldn't collect under the open air walkways. The property is beautiful & well maintained. Work out room is equipped nicely for a week's stay. They keep chilled bottled water there for guests. I like it when the actual property looks like the photos!
The pool view room was very large & the terrace had a table, love seat glider, 2 full length chaises. We didn't use the Ambassador upgrade because our children were in the connecting room & it was such a beautiful setting with convenient downstairs access that it didn't matter (they wouldn't have been upgraded with us with just 1 membership). Our 2 pool view rooms had tubs, which I was thrilled to see...apparantly most have showers only. Robe & slippers provided were comfy. A/C worked great & wasn't noisy. Single cup brew coffee maker was fitted with nice quality coffee pods & set ups. Bath products were also very nice & generous. We didn't even use all the daily complimentary water bottles (Ambassador perk) because they are the very large ones & all island restaurants have safe glasses of water available (don't have to buy bottled water with meals, though they'd like to sell them!). We bought 10 small water bottles at the Mega on day 1...I'd just get 4 the next time & refill with hotel provided water. You end up buying cold water bottles at attractions & tours, too. You will share the room with a few ants & mosquitoes...they provide a nice all natural bug spray in each room, though. The ants in the bathroom weren't big or many, & I know it's unavoidable with this type of property/locale. Loved the large straw pool bags provided, & soft beach towels.
We had read warnings ahead of time about the attempt to sell you on a time share type of arrangement so we did not meet for a lengthy time with the consierge. He did attempt to schedule us, but wasn't too overbearing about it and still offered us helpful information with maps and answers about island activities. We just don't travel enough to consider the investment.
We booked a Tulum tour with Carlos at the tour desk & he was very informative, answered many questions about several different tours for us. He made a point to ask how it went the next day. The gate staff recognize you quickly & have good communication with the valets so they are waiting for you when you pull under the covered entry to park your car. We never had to wait long to have the car pulled around, either. Scuba Du seems to know their stuff. We're new to it & did a mini lesson/dive around the property. Husband and kids did another 1/2 day mini dive away from the hotel property while I shopped in town.
We ate many very nice meals both inside & on the beach. Mayan appetizer plate, breakfast meusli, beef & chicken nachoes (huge), guacamole, giant hot dog/fries, veg/fruit plate (also huge), veg fried rice, were all standouts. Wish I could remember the rest of the menu. Our Sunday morning breakfast, though, was sub par compared to the other days...must have had a different kitchen staff. We also had a delicious dinner & great service in the Italian restaurant. The guitar player was excellent & we were happy to hear him on multiple nights.
Bed & linens were wonderful, slept like babies. I need to find out where the mattresses comes from!
Things I'd change: hooks in the bathroom are so high that I had to stand on my toes & really reach to hang anything (5'4")! Peep hole on the door was also very high. Fire/smoke alarm box was mounted directly above the bed and blinks constantly...distracting when trying to go to sleep. Wifi in the room was spotty. Probably the 1 thing that I think should be improved most is the lighting. With the clouds and rain, it was so dark at the coffee maker that I pulled out my travel flashlight the first morning. The dressing/sink area is also quite dim. Reading light above the bed was good, though. None of these would keep me from returning.
