As a mid-50’s couple used to all-inclusive, pampering dive resorts and condo’s, (and after studying Trip Advisor reviews) knowingly we decided to accompany a “value-driven” dive group that had been to the Barracuda before and they liked it’s base accommodations and party environment.
Be prepared for no amenities. If you are above the first floor you get a small balcony with no dive gear pegs, two full size beds, small side chest with nothing on it and no other storage, 3/4 bath, buy your drinking water, a dormitory frig that you can stock with food and beverages from the nearby “Walmart of Cozumel” called Chedraui (a very nice, complete super-store with reasonable prices and good selection of wines and everything you are used to). Before I forget, here is a useful article on San Miguel which is where you will be; http://www.travelyucatan.com/cozumel_shopping_mexico.php. Buy your H2O there in the 10 litre containers. You can walk there in 10 mins and take a $3 cab back. Cab’s are the best deal on the island besides unlimited snorkeling (try Playa Corona, just south of town about 10 minutes, then west; there are signs). The Barracuda has nice, polite staff too. Cleaning standards don’t get the corners but it is not bad…wonderful people though. We provide ongoing tips of $1-3 to various people daily for little things, particularly if one of the youngsters carries up your entire heavy luggage. Tip generously and they will be grateful and look for ways they can help be of service. Valuables can be kept in the “vault” behind the service counter for the nominal cost of $1 per transaction. You can also buy cheap beer and h2O 24x7 at the desk if you close the pool bar. The semi-private pool is nice but small and caters to two cruise ships daily. It has a nice swim-up bar with reasonable prices that will add a little extra tequila to your margarita upon request. The cruise people are largely young and nice but the women often wear the tiniest bikinis possible and sometimes they tend to “pop out” of their tops when wrestling in the pool. This is NOT a good place for children and teens as there is nothing to do except hang at the pool and snorkel in the easy-access ocean cove, with parental supervision. There are tons of great restaurants anywhere from 3-15 minutes for breakfast and other meals. Take a coffee maker with you or plan to visit the restaurant next door every a.m. Prices are quite high everywhere (breakfast $7-10, lunches $10-15, dinner $12+) which is one plus for all-inclusives. Diving was good and we enjoyed diving again with Dive Paradise, who has a shop on premises. If you plan to hang gear, get a 2nd floor or higher room as the first floor rooms have small porches on the semi-public beach. The pool is noisy until about 9 pm but we were never in our rooms other than to go to bed after 10 and get up by 6:30 and gone unless we needed something from the room. The Samsung air conditioner works well but had to keep the settings pretty cool to keep up. I like a firm mattress so I was pleased but my wife thought it a bit too firm. The bottom line; for $80/day we got a very basic accommodation. Previously we stayed at The Hotel Cozumel, an all-inclusive and some friends relocated there for $85/da since they had young teens. This would have been the better choice for us, but depends upon the rate that week. They simply walked over from the Barracuda and asked what the rate was. It was a fun trip.
