After staying at the Coral Reef Inn for a week in March of 2008, I can tell you why there are so many positive reviews of this place. It’s because they’re all true. If you’re looking for a swim-up bar, party-type hotel, this isn’t it. No pool, no bar. If you’re looking for a comfortable, relaxing hotel in a quiet neighborhood where you’ll be treated like family, this IS the place. The van ride from the airport will cost you $7.80 U.S., and the drivers know where this place is, so don’t worry about that.
Let me clear something up that confused me while reading the reviews. Although Scott & Cindy built the place and are still associated with it, they no longer run the day to day operations of it. Jerry & Leona are the current (English speaking) hosts, and you won’t meet a couple of friendlier, more down to earth people. Jerry even gave me a ride to the airport on my departure day. But, please don’t expect that (he was on a beer run anyway!).
Rooms 1 & 2 are on the ground floor, rooms 3, 4 & 5 are on the second floor. I would suggest second floor because it puts you closer to the rooftop, which is a very nice place to start and end your day, or have a “couple” drinks before you venture out for the night. Then again, rooms 1 & 2 have no stairs to climb after returning from tequila “tasting”.
For SCUBA divers, the pier where Dive Paradise picks you up (Hotel Barracuda) is only a 15 minute walk (or 20 peso, 4 minute cab ride). I actually found it to be a good way to stretch out before and after your dives. Plus, you walk right past the Chedraui super store, so you can hit the ATM and/or pick up some beer on your way back to the Inn. About the ATMs, you will be charged 3% of the amount you withdraw each time you use the ATM, so there is no benefit to making one large withdrawal, rather than several smaller ones. Dive Paradise has gear storage lockers available at Hotel Barracuda. There is a $25 U.S. (cash) deposit required. However, you get it all back when you turn your key back in, so it costs you nothing. I found it easiest to just leave my gear there until I was done diving. The Coral Reef Inn has rinse tanks and hangers on the roof, so you can give your gear a good rinse and dry before packing it away.
To sum up: Read the other reviews for more details on this place. The information in them is accurate. The next time I go to Cozumel, this will be the FIRST place I look to stay.
