My wife and I have now visited 7 all-inclusive resorts since getting married. In all our travels, we have never experienced such a horrible vacation as we did here.
We are easy-going, friendly, and all we expect is friendly, timely service with good food and drinks and some organized activities.
We went there because the place was highly recommended by RCI, because it is “all-inclusive” and has a 5 out of 5 rating on the RCI website. We went there for the 2nd of a 2-week vacation. Our first week was spent at another all-inclusive resort in Cancun, Mexico.
After many hours of travel we arrived at the Wyndham lobby from where guests go to reach the Sabor property that is also owned by Wyndham. No one but a bellboy was there where we arrived and he had no idea what we meant by Sabor. He told us to go wait in line so we could check in with all other guests at the main counter (contrary to the literature that promoted a private check-in). We waited 20 minutes only to end up speaking with someone who told us where to go to check in as Sabor guests.
We trekked through the property following the path we were given, across the grounds were sewage is treated and which smell absolutely horrible. We reached the small office where the private check-in took place, along with many other guests. There was only 1 person doing the work behind the desk. No refresher drink, fresh towel, hello, or welcome was offered. It was hot and we had to wait again.
We finally sat at the desk, only to be told that our traveller’s cheques are not accepted at this desk, only cash or credit card. I suppose it’s hard to fathom Sabor might have guests who travel internationally, far from home, and who might not feel comfortable carrying thousands of dollars in cash on their person. We were directed to return to the first counter, back across the sewage-smelling grounds, where our traveller’s cheques would be accepted. We did, and waited in line again before paying for our stay.
Back to the “private check-in” at Sabor, across the sewage smell, to go get our luggage and room keys. Since we arrived before check-in time, we were invited to go sit at the restaurant next to office (Mystique) and grab a drink and some food while we wait. We did and wait, and wait and wait some more. We experienced the taste of what was to come for the bulk of the rest of the week: exceptionally slow, unfriendly, unwelcoming service! We would have gotten up and gone to the bar - some 50 feet from where we sat - to get our own drinks but the bartender wasn’t even around.
After a painful wait to get a drink and something to eat, we hauled our own 4 luggage bags to our room and checked ourselves in. It wasn’t surprising at this point to find nothing in the fridge!
We were there to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary, but it seemed impossible to convince anyone at Sabor that the day meant anything special to us or to motivate them to consider doing a little something special at any one of our sit-down dinners on the property. When it came down to it, we showed up at one of the restaurants and for a second night in a row found that no one had a clue that we were there to celebrate anything special. We bit the bullet, grinded our teeth, and figured we would ask for champagne to ease the pain. Sorry, we were told, we’re out of champagne. Just like they were out of butter for toast, or only had kids cereals at Mystique (adults only?).
Considering it is an adult only resort, it became clear to the majority of guests we spoke with that the only activities that happen on the property do so on the Wyndham property where there a lots of kids - things don't happen at Sabor unless the guests get together and make them happen.
Having to trek through the stench of sewage to get to the Wyndham lobby and back to Sabor during an entire week’s stay at Sabor, enduring painfully slow and unfriendly service as well as a near-complete lack of daily or nightly activities (unless willing to go to the Wyndham property and enjoy things with families and kids, which was not what we sought or paid for), having the absolutely worst wedding anniversary dinner experience, and having to complain up to the general manager to have any concern noted made this stay one of the worst.
It’s a real shame because the property is nice, the room was nice, and we and other guests were eager to enjoy our stay. The service however will make it near impossible for me to ever want to go back or recommend it to anyone.
On a closing note, after numerous complaints by us and other guests, we started to notice some changes immediately but they have a lot of work to do.
