From the moment we passed under the palapa into this magnificent home we felt we were entering a sanctuary of calm and relaxation set against the backdrop of the stunning blue sea right outside the window. Our hosts Sherry, Stan and Sophie were waiting inside to welcome us and make sure we had everything we needed. Throughout our stay their hospitality was second to none and we soon discovered they are a delightful family.
The house itself is a work of art with whitewashed walls, arched Moorish windows, sweeping balconies and patios overlooking the sea at your doorstep, massive rough-hewn wooden beams and stone floors, a gourmet kitchen and a wonderful blend of indoor and outdoor spaces. Gorgeous antique furniture, carefully chosen fixtures and the most exquisite beds we have ever slept in reflect Sherry and Stan’s vision for a truly spectacular retreat.
Our three daughters (10, 12 and 15) spent hours in the pool with its beautiful stone fountains embellished with greenery and vivid blossoms. It was hard to tell what the pool would be like from the photos online but we were pleasantly surprised to see that it forms part of the living space and was definitely well-dimensioned for the kids to play in. Though we enjoyed perfect sunshine every day, one night we awoke to a torrential downpour. When I stood in the living room under cover of the roof it was magical to hold out my hand and feel sheets of tropical rain coming down into the pool steps away – inside the house!
The bedrooms are all striking, particularly the main floor master which stretches the full length of the house and shares an intimate bond with the sea. Upstairs, a common seating area provides another place to relax for guests of either bedroom. Each has both a gorgeous king-sized bed with crisp white bedding and a loft or bunk, as well as an en-suite bathroom. Lovely wooden shutters open out to the turquoise sea in each room., and high ceilings create an air of space and tranquility. Each room has a fridge, safe, flat-screen TV, WIFI and coffee maker – every detail is covered.
Climbing the stairs en route to the rooftop patio provides peekaboo views out arched flower-lined windows to the pool below, culminating at the top in 360-degree views of the island and the sea.
With high-end appliances, gorgeous copper sinks and plentiful supplies, the kitchen would tempt any chef. We enjoyed Sherry’s exquisite gourmet breakfasts of local ingredients prepared with an island flair and impeccable presentation. In fact we found those breakfasts to be so satisfying that they would carry us through a day of beachcombing, snorkeling, swimming, shopping and sightseeing…and the restaurants on Isla offered so many great options that we ate out every night - without breaking the bank.
For our family of five, having the entire house provided more than enough space. When my parents arrived for a few days at the end of our stay we still found we had plenty of room. The writing desk in the loft upstairs was a perfect place to stare out to sea instead of doing homework…the roof deck beckoned anyone with a book…and the beach offered endless treasures to be discovered.
In terms of location, Casa Magi Azul is ideal. Its easterly exposure means constant sea breezes cool the house even on the hottest days. The practically private beach directly in front is great for beachcombing and exploring. When we were there the water was too rough to swim or snorkel but I think this changes seasonally. Never mind – the white sand stretches of Playa Norte are only a five minute golf cart ride away. We definitely recommend renting a golf cart for at least part of your stay – it’s a fun and easy way to explore the island and run into town. If you prefer to walk, downtown Isla is only about 15-20 minutes away. If you don’t have a golf cart, Sherry and Stan are always willing to take your grocery list to town and bring back what you need, or you can flag a taxi right outside the front door.
Overall we felt very lucky to have discovered this magical place and to have come to know Stan and Sherry and especially their daughter Sophie, who was a charming tour guide and companion for our girls on several days. We even got our share of doggy love from Oscar the Chihuahua, who will steal your heart from the get-go and keep you from missing your own four-legged amigos back home. As we caught the ferry back from Isla to Cancun en route to the airport we reflected that this had been our most fun and relaxing holiday ever.
Gracias Casa Magi Azul!
