“Absolutely Beautiful Hotel, Great Location - We're Going Back!”

Caribe Hotel

9 Nov 2007

Overall:
Beautiful hotel, great staff, excellent location. The hotel is designed with a garden and fountain in the middle, open to the sky, and the rooms/hallways around. Such a beautiful colonial style with archways and tiled floors. The entrance is in the corner of a beautiful park that is great for people watching. There is a great rooftop pool that offers beautiful views of the nearby cathedral, as well as the rest of the city.

Location:
Only a block from the main plaza, it was right in the heart of everything. Walking distance to shopping, the marketplace, cathedrals, the city hall, restaurants, almost anything except the airport.

Rooms:
The rooms are small, but functional, and overlook the central garden. Honestly, the hotel is so beautiful we didn't spend much time in the room except to sleep.

Service:
Front desk staff were very helpful and the cleaning staff very efficient.

We definitely going to stay here again!

“Health hazard.”

We had booked a room woth a queen sized bed that was supposedly a luxury accomodation. When we arrived the hotel had obviously lost our reservation and showed us a dusty, mildew-ridden room with no natural light or window to the outside, with 3 twin beds with very tired linens and hard mattresses. After refusing that room we were given another room with a double bed with a slightly less mildew aroma but also with no natural light or window to the outside. We complained once again and were given a suite with 2 large rooms with windows and small balconies to the outside plaza. At first sight it seemed much better but after one inhalation we realized that the air in the room was a hazard to our health. The mold or mildew was overwhelming. Even without this issue the room had a 1962 era, tired atmosphere.
We practically ran back to the 2nd room with the double bed and stayed one night , then left in the morning to find mildew-free accomodations.

“Mostly great, a few flaws”

Great location. Couldn't be more convenient. Absolutely charming. When we walked in, a local band of musicians was sitting in the dining area, rehearsing, and this amazing voice serenaded me. Our room was on the second floor. The exterior (courtyard) is stunning - a fountain in the middle of a small park-like area, the walls a sunny yellow with white trim. Though we disapprove of keeping wild animals in captivity, the toucans are kept in a very clean cage with good food and water (I have expertise pertaining to birds), though the cage should be larger. The rooms are not quite as nice as the courtyard and public areas. Small and dark, two small though comfortable beds. They do open to the courtyard, so there is a potential for noise, particularly if you want to keep the shutters open for fresh air. It was quiet while we were there. The bathroom was a bit shabby. No bathmat, no hand towels. What we found most puzzling was the lack of bottled water. We've never been in a Mexican hotel that didn't provide bottled water. We asked about it and they didn't give us an answer. There is a computer for internet access, but it is an antique and excrutiatingly slow, and infected with viruses. The food is OK. Nothing to write home about. With all the great restaurants in Merida, who cares? The parking was a hassle - a lot about 1/2 block away. They told us they would close at 9:30 and we arrived back a minute or two before 9:30 and they were locked up tight even though we'd told them that we would be returning. We found another lot a couple of blocks away, but there are very few parking lots and most do not stay open late, so the parking situation means you either take a cab or make sure to be back before the parking lot closes. Price was reasonable - $45/night.

“Great Location”

Caribe Hotel

30 Aug 2007

Hotel is in great location near the main plaza. There is a festival on Sunday night in the plaza with vendors selling jewelry, t-shirts, paintings, many more. The restaurant downstairs served a great breakfast. The room and bathroom was a bit small but adequate. If you spend most of the day sightseeing as I did, you'll just need the room to crash at night. I paid about $50/night for a 4 night stay.

Hotel looks great and is comfortable enough. Staff is uneven. Some were very helpful and some were awful. They didn't call a taxi the night before my departure when I requested them to do so for an early flight that I wanted to get on to avoid the hurricane that was predicted to hit that evening. They instead hailed an un metered taxi from the street. They also missed the wake-up call at 5:30 a.m. I asked one of the receptionists for change for 500 pesos and he said no angrily and a little later another receptionist was able to do so. I'd probably stay there again because of the convenient location and price. But beware it's not at all convivial.
