Words and photographs just do not do this place justice. All the positive reviews are dead on and so I find it somewhat difficult to add anything new to my own review about the service and beauty of this lovely jewel of a resort. I have been coveting this place for years after hearing friends' reviews, Travel Channel Reviews, Conde Nast reviews and, of course, Tripadvisor reviews- waiting for just the right time to plan a trip to Maroma. For our wedding anniversay this year, we originally booked the new Mandarin Oriental in Playa. But after reading concerning Tripadvisor reviews on the MO, and realizing we would not be able to get an ocean view, nor (more important being in the HOT jungle) an ocean breeze at the MO, we switched to a Sian Nah suite package at the Maroma and were so very pleased we did. The atmosphere is unlike any place and you truly feel at home in how there is never a "need" to sign for anything - you just feel as though you are visiting! Much was included with the suite package we chose: beach service (for all),breakfast, spa treatment for couples, snorkel trip, that made our choice of the extravagant Sian Nah suite just right for us. As noted so many times before this review, service is 'on point' everywhere you go - this cannot be stressed enough and makes a tremendous difference when on vacation. The place is beautiful, surprisingly secluded in this day of over development, meticulously clean and very romantic. We checked in and were told the hotel was 80% occupancy - however, we hardly ever saw other guests for 3 days! It is important to note, however, that we traveled during the week - Mon - Fri - which we found ideal. By Friday morning of our departure in late June, all beach futons were snagged up by 9am but we had our choice of dozens early in the week. I do recommend the snorkel excurtion that was included in our package. It was not too long nor too short and the marina staff is very nice and accomodating. We were rescheduled many times b/c of impending storms, rough seas or lightning, but they always were able to get us on the schedule. I cannot tell you if it is worth the $ to purchase the vouchers as I do not know how much it actually cost. It was a fun experience and worh the free vouchers definitely. Our spa treatments were wonderful, having a couples massage in our suite one day, I having a facial on another rainy day. There IS a little confusion at the spa as to which door is for the men's area and which is for women's so beware! I did not experience an embarassing event, thankfully, but it could easily happen.
Now, I would not feel right if I were not completely honest with you fellow dedicated "tripadvisor addicts" if I did not include the minor snags encountered during our stay. Our Sian Nah suite was on the second floor which I requested via email prior to our arrival. Spectacular suite - the best I have ever experienced anyhwere! But our A/C did not work and we did sweat it out the first night. The hotel staff was prompt and efficient in trying to correct the problem which only seemed to get more grim throughout the week (they never were able to repair the A/C and will have to replace the entire unit). We were promptly moved to a lower Sian Nah (another great suite but not as private and did not have the lovely upper veranda) and were compensated appropriately for any inconvenience. This is where the impeccable service- minded, "guest importance" -minded staff makes ALL the difference in that the beauty of the "small" resort is that all levels of the staff are on top of all issues - doing their best to make them non-issues as soon as possible. I have traveled to so many hotels where concerns are simply passed form one MOD to another with NO results or regard for the guest. It was so pleasant to actually deal with staff who thought about and actually cared about our situation and did everything, and more, to accommodate us.
One other small disppointment - the dinner menus were not great for such an extravagant resort. (My husband seemed to order better off the menu than I). Breakfast in our room each morning was wonderful. Light lunches on the beach, at the spa restaurant or ceviche at Freddy's Bar was great - but not dinner. I'm an "almost foodie" so I enjoy a great dining experience. But the view from everywhere you dine at the resort is so fantastic that I did not care all that much.
Another observation that did confuse me was the presence of a few children during our stay. It has always been my understanding that children under 16 yrs were not allowed at this adult resort (another reason for our decision to move from the MO). No issues with this, just somewhat baffling.
The last - we did not encounter the "instant beach service" that others have mentioned and have raved about. I even had to walk to the bar (we were on the opposite end of the beach) one day to flag someone down to take our lunch and drink order (life is tough, right?), so just keep in mind it depends on where you lounge on the beach to get that type of service.
Reading previous reviews about cost was very helpful, indeed. Going into the experience simply knowing that IT WLL COST at time of check out was better than the alternative of being shocked. (At least an additional $2-3 K after paying for flights and hotel deposit for a 4 day/night stay). That said, it was truly worth every penny.
I must conclude by saying that any negatives (major or minor) were never over shadowed by the extreme positives of this magical place. We will return to the Maroma!!
