My husband and I just returned from an 8-night stay at Maroma for our honeymoon and couldn't have been happier with our choice. I had read many Trip Advisor reviews of the property and had high expectations, and all I can say is that Maroma exceeded all of them!
As others have written, Maroma stands apart because of its wonderful and kind staff. Upon arrival at the hotel, we were greeted with several smiles and "Holas!," two margaritas and a tour of the grounds. By the second day everyone there knew our names. It means a lot to them that you learn theirs and attempt to speak in Spanish. The entire staff really go out of their way to make you feel like you are at home and are happy to help you with anything.
On that note, the staff is constantly adding personal touches to make you feel special. We got upgraded to an ocean-facing suite, which had a spacious living room, bedroom and large bathroom. The room was decorated with red rose petals upon our arrival and they had also given us a complimentary bottle of champagne. On another night my husband and I came back from dinner and one of the staff was drawing a bubble bath in our plunge bath and adding rose petals and candles all around the bathroom. These are not things we requested...they just seemed to happen by magic! Every night the woman who did the turn-down service would also leave some kind of treat like chocolate-covered strawberries or a tequila cocktail. These are just some of the small touches that make you want to stay there and never go home...when it finally was time to go home we learned that Maroma has its own VIP lounge at the Cancun Airport for exclusive use by guests of Maroma and the Ritz-Carlton. Even upon leaving, we were once again surprised by the level of detail and thoughtfulness that they have put into making their guests comfortable.
We spent most of our time at the beach, which is absolutely pristine, as it is raked several times a day and is therefore free of seaweed and debris. We never had a problem getting a beach bed and we easily spent all day out there just relaxing and swimming in the beautiful water. Definitely order lunch from Freddy's Bar and have it brought over to your beach bed/lounge chair. The shrimp quesadillas, ceviche and guacamole are so good and I keep wishing I had some here at home! Freddy's is also the perfect spot to have a pre or post-dinner cocktail. The pina coladas were some of the best we've tasted, but I don't think you could have a bad experience there! We had fun talking to Freddy himself, who is very funny and outgoing, and has lots of stories to share.
We ate dinner most nights outside at El Restaurante and one night inside at El Sol. El Restaurante has a very nice selection and we particularly liked the fresh fish selections of the red snapper and shellfish. Sitting right on the beach at sunset is wonderful and we never tired of it. El Sol is really special and worth going to for more nouvelle cuisine. We thought of leaving Maroma one night for dinner but were enjoying the food and atmosphere so much that we were glad we stayed in.
I recommend trying to get a room facing the water as you will get a nice breeze. We walked through the inner-facing courtyard areas in the evenings and it was always significantly hotter and muggier than the rooms facing the water. Also, the mosquitoes can be a problem on nights with little or no breeze, so bring repellent or plan to eat inside on those nights.
Because Maroma is small, you will never feel like just another guest at a mega-resort. The staff really want to know who you are and how to make your stay the best that it can be! That level of service and kindness, combined with the paradise setting, make for a wonderful, magical place to stay.
