“Absolutely Amazing Honeymoon at Maroma”

Maroma Resort & Spa

23 Jul 2008
6/7 found this review helpful

My husband and I just returned from an 8-night stay at Maroma for our honeymoon and couldn't have been happier with our choice. I had read many Trip Advisor reviews of the property and had high expectations, and all I can say is that Maroma exceeded all of them!

As others have written, Maroma stands apart because of its wonderful and kind staff. Upon arrival at the hotel, we were greeted with several smiles and "Holas!," two margaritas and a tour of the grounds. By the second day everyone there knew our names. It means a lot to them that you learn theirs and attempt to speak in Spanish. The entire staff really go out of their way to make you feel like you are at home and are happy to help you with anything.

On that note, the staff is constantly adding personal touches to make you feel special. We got upgraded to an ocean-facing suite, which had a spacious living room, bedroom and large bathroom. The room was decorated with red rose petals upon our arrival and they had also given us a complimentary bottle of champagne. On another night my husband and I came back from dinner and one of the staff was drawing a bubble bath in our plunge bath and adding rose petals and candles all around the bathroom. These are not things we requested...they just seemed to happen by magic! Every night the woman who did the turn-down service would also leave some kind of treat like chocolate-covered strawberries or a tequila cocktail. These are just some of the small touches that make you want to stay there and never go home...when it finally was time to go home we learned that Maroma has its own VIP lounge at the Cancun Airport for exclusive use by guests of Maroma and the Ritz-Carlton. Even upon leaving, we were once again surprised by the level of detail and thoughtfulness that they have put into making their guests comfortable.

We spent most of our time at the beach, which is absolutely pristine, as it is raked several times a day and is therefore free of seaweed and debris. We never had a problem getting a beach bed and we easily spent all day out there just relaxing and swimming in the beautiful water. Definitely order lunch from Freddy's Bar and have it brought over to your beach bed/lounge chair. The shrimp quesadillas, ceviche and guacamole are so good and I keep wishing I had some here at home! Freddy's is also the perfect spot to have a pre or post-dinner cocktail. The pina coladas were some of the best we've tasted, but I don't think you could have a bad experience there! We had fun talking to Freddy himself, who is very funny and outgoing, and has lots of stories to share.

We ate dinner most nights outside at El Restaurante and one night inside at El Sol. El Restaurante has a very nice selection and we particularly liked the fresh fish selections of the red snapper and shellfish. Sitting right on the beach at sunset is wonderful and we never tired of it. El Sol is really special and worth going to for more nouvelle cuisine. We thought of leaving Maroma one night for dinner but were enjoying the food and atmosphere so much that we were glad we stayed in.

I recommend trying to get a room facing the water as you will get a nice breeze. We walked through the inner-facing courtyard areas in the evenings and it was always significantly hotter and muggier than the rooms facing the water. Also, the mosquitoes can be a problem on nights with little or no breeze, so bring repellent or plan to eat inside on those nights.

Because Maroma is small, you will never feel like just another guest at a mega-resort. The staff really want to know who you are and how to make your stay the best that it can be! That level of service and kindness, combined with the paradise setting, make for a wonderful, magical place to stay.

Stayed at the Maroma for 4 nights in late June, at one of the sian-nah suites. From start to finish, it was a wonderful experience. I had researched many other places before deciding on the Maroma (Parrot Cay; One & Only Palmilla (was undergoing construction during this period); las Ventanas; Four Seasons Punta Mita, etc., as well as the other hotels in this area:the Mandarin Oriental; Rosewood Mayakoba; and Tides) and finally decided on Maroma partly as a result of Tripadvisor reviews... and I was not disappointed. (as for price btw, it is expensive but for the kind of room and setting, in my view it was a better value than most of the others). The staff here are all super-friendly, making an effort to learn everyone's name, and service is with a smile. The Sian-nah suite was brand new, with a huge bathroom (with indoor and outdoor shower and jacuzzi), a gym room with an elliptical machine and weights; a terrace with a little plunge pool (which we did not use) and hammock (which we did) and another terrace facing the ocean, along with a rooftop outdoor massage area where masseuses from the spa (which is gorgeous btw) came and gave us massages... was super relaxing because we felt the breeze and could hear the sea... The beach set up is wonderful--tons of room btw, we never had a problem finding beach mattresses... the staff would sweep the algae off the beach every morning; they would open up umbrellas and serve drinks or food beachside. There are a few dining options and we were happy with all of them; we had lunch at Freddy's bar every day (excellent ceviche and tons of tequila to choose from); and also, since we were celebrating a special occasion, we had a special beachside romantic dinner set up one night, complete with flame-lit path to our table and again wonderful setting and custom-made food. On Friday night there was a fire show and mariachi band, all of which were very tasteful (on the one night we went to Playa del Carmen to the Mayan restaurant Yaxche--which we totally disliked-- we experienced a tacky version of a mariachi band). I would totally skip Playa del Carmen by the way. We did go to Tulum one day, which was a good cultural experience, but frankly I was content to just stay at the resort. It is a peaceful and quiet resort, not very kid friendly probably; for us without kids, it was a perfect quiet relaxing escape. There were special romantic touches at various points throughout our stay which made us love the Maroma and we would go back in a heart beat. By the way, upon arrival from Cancun airport, we were greeted by someone (make sure you go outside and avoid all the people who approach you indoors) and met the Maroma's driver in a swanky SUV (maybe an Escalade? but in any event, brand new with refreshing towels and bottled water); the trip to the hotel was less than 1/2 hour. The weather during our stay was hot, but less so than we had expected; I think it made a big difference to have an ocean-front room, as there is always a breeze. For noise sensitive people, note that you DO hear the waves at night, so take ear plugs if you are in one of those rooms... I went on the snorkeling trip, which was fun; but I missed the Temazcal as it was totally booked by the time I got my act together, so if you are interested book early.

You are picked up in a black, 2008 chevy suburban from the Cancun Airport, then wisked away like someone more important than you really are. Within 30 minutes, you are being escorted throughout the plantation of Maroma by hospitality. There is no arrogance - only warm smiles wanting you to relax and be waited upon. Everyone knows your name when you arrive - and they serve you even better when you know theirs (Samantha, Jorge, Fernando, Nefte, William). We were constantly spoken to by first name (and even my spanish name). We were very impressed by the staff's attentiveness to detail, their recall, and their courtesy.

The accomodations are superb. We were upgraded to a master suite (approx. 1300 sqft), with my cigars in place, rose petals on the bed for my wife, requested drinks/flowers, etc. The service is beyond reproach.

The food is excellent. The ceviche bar on the beach is truly refreshing. Try the tuna/grapefruit & the lobster/mango.

Dine on the beach if you can - if you can stay here, you can afford the price. Your wife will always remember it. We did the beach dining on a Wednesday - Maroma was dead on Wednesday night - perfect for a quiet dinner. No one - literally - but us and Fernando our waiter - on the beach or for that matter at the hotel that evening.

Speaking of, the beach is truly magnificent; clean, well kept, and for the most part, deserted. Within the 1.5 miles of beach in Maroma cove, there is one other small hotel/resort. You'll never notice them, or for that matter, the other guests at Maroma. Even on Saturdays and a full hotel, there are plenty of beach beds/loungers/chairs available. Not once did we see any people "camping out" for a place to stay in the sun. With only 60 rooms, there's plenty of space for everyone.

We also went fishing - caught some kingfish which the chef prepared three different ways for us.

Friday night is fun - the chef cooks steaks/lobster on the beach (on coals like all steaks should be cooked). There is a mayan fire show as well - pretty fun, especially after you've had a couple or ten drinks that day.

See the town in Playa - I highly recomend Yaxache (sp?) - supberb mayan dining, very authentic and very reasonable pricing. Hosptality can hook you up with a driver to take you there.

The spa is first class - i'm not a spa guy, but spending two hours wrapped in chocolate (naked) is remotely entertaining - my wife loved the treatment, I enjoyed the massage.

Supreme recomendation for couples wanting to reconnect. In my opinion, Maroma is not for singles and far too romantic (and quiet) to be shared with groups of friends.

This must be considered as one of the world's best.

I can say the reviews on this site are completely accurate - the good ones anyway. My wife and I stayed at Maroma from June 26-30 and I think it was an experience we will never forget as long as we live.

The staff is incredibly wonderful and KIND. The food is wonderful. DO splurge for a special dinner, it was so fun to plan the meal with the chef the day before. The best surprise for my wife.

The beach beds are the best. We spent two FULL days on the beach - loved the beach menu.

Ugh, I could go on forever. Just book it. Don't think twice. My wife cried when we left. And these days many sentences start with - "when we go back to Maroma......"

“Something Else That Was Excellent ....”

Maroma Resort & Spa

Safe to say that our experience was in line with the glowing references elsewhere - the setting is sensational and the service is impeccable.

But there are two things worth adding that, for us, set Maroma apart. First, there is a sincerity about the place - we never felt that anybody was working at being pleasant and friendly. It felt very genuine.

Second, as a disabled traveller, from the moment we first contacted the resort, until the moment we left, they couldn't have done more. Moreover, they did it discreetly and spontaneously. I've never felt as relaxed.

Don't hesitate!
