My wife and i go to playa restaurants fairly often and when our favorite north end place closed (cocina 38), we were hoping this place would be as good. It is always crowded and we were turned away once because we had no reservation.
So we got a table tonight and were seated next to the street. Fine. Our server was certainly earnest but missed the boat on a few points. It could certainly could have been a language thing but here it goes: forgot drinks, had to ask for other things a few times, brought mixed salad with no dressing. I think the idea was to use the oil and vinegar at the table but after some discussion, he gave us a very nice mustard dressing. I guess that is sort of emblematic of the entire experience. The roots of the dishes were quite good, just some Lack of execution took away from the experience. I had a half a dozen raw oysters which were quite excellent except the did not come with anything but a slice of lime. I am used to the horseradish or cocktail sauce or something. Our pasta entrees (one shrimp, one clam) were well done, the pasta was clearly homade and cooked to perfection (al dente). The ingredients were very fresh but both dishes would have benefitted from some garlic and/or
salt for a little more flavor.
In short, a good place which can be great with little work, i guess this is one place that i disagree with the raves. I have had better and worse meals in playa. Unfortunately, sometimes service here is not quite what we are used to, i really miss cocina 38, i guess no one else does, this place is always mobbed, maybe an off night or we misordered...
