My husband and I were at Gran Porto for our late honeymoon Dec 5 - 12. I was extremely nervous before we arrived because I had heard all the horror stories regarding overbooking. I was prepared to put up a fight, but was quite pleased that there were no problems. The resort is very beautiful. My husband had no idea what to expect because I booked the whole trip and he was blown away. We booked the junior suite and were pleased with it. The shower is huge!!! It was not an ocean view room, but the balcony had a view of both the ocean and the street. (Room 340) You definitely need a third floor room to appreciate the view.
I didn't hear anyone talk about overbooking and I looked into the smaller rooms and they didn't look bad. They're just the standard hotel room. But I can understand being upset not getting what you paid for.
The food was pretty good, too. You can order stuff in the buffet and things that are not on the menus in the other places. My husband had filet mignon and it did not seem like filet. And you have to watch how they cook stuff. If you ask for something well done it will be medium rare. Other than that the food was great. The Maria Margarita is excellent. We had our best meal there. The italian place is good also.
The beach is narrow, but we heard that was because of the hurricane. It wasn't bad though. We spent most of our time at the pool. The main pool is fun and something is always going on. There's a pool upstairs on the 3rd floor that we hung out at the most. It's very quiet and hardly anyone goes there. Great personal service at the bar! It also has a swim up bar.
The drinks are good. There could have been more of a variety of beer, but they had Corona and Modelo. They had top shelf liquors and the margaritas are great. If Jesus is your bartender have him make you a Dirty Monkey. It's his speciality.
The staff was wonderful. Our room was always clean and it seemed that the staff was always cleaning something. They were very friendly too.
We did tip the maid $2 a day and the bartender occassionaly. They have to split the tips with everyone including the boss and don't make much.
We also took the ferry to Cozumel (take Dramomine!). It wasn't that impressive. Playa del Carmen is a nicer town. The shopping is good. Remember to bargain! We also went to Tulum and there is this bar down the beach called the Blue Parrott that is awesome. YOu sit on swings and they have killer margaritas.
