“Great resort!”

Sunset Fishermen Spa & Resort

We booked our stay through an RCI exchange. We got the 2-bedroom suite with 2 balconies and ocean views. The room was fantastic. We traveled with our 18-month old son, so it was nice to have an extra bedroom for him. The resort was great. It was a small, intimate resort and you didn't have to go far for anything (e.g., pool, beach, spa, restaurants), which was nice because we were forever forgetting something up in our room and had to run up several times a day. The pools were small, but nice. Our son pretty much got the kiddie pool to himself since there were no other children there during our stay. He absolutely loved it! The only drawback to this resort was the mealplan. With the RCI exchange, we were required to do the mealplan. It was expensive ($61/person/day) for breakfast and your choice of lunch or dinner. The food was not good, not terrible, but not good. For that amount of money, we would rather go out for our meals and would have gotten much better food. There also wasn't much variety when it came to food options. The breakfast they served was the same buffet spread everyday, which got tiring. We ate at the Italian restaurant one night, and that was pretty bad too. I'm not sure what the normal rates are at the hotel, but if you just book directly with them, you don't have to participate in the mealplan. Overall, this was a nice resort and we would definitely recommend it. If we do go back, we would opt out of the meal plan if possible.

The resort is located about 5-minutes by car from the main 5th avenue strip of Playa del Carmen. We went there everyday either for lunch or dinner. There are a lot of shops and restaurants and just a nice place to walk around since there is no car traffic along the 20-block stretch.

Tulum, a small beach town about an hour south of Playa del Carmen was worth the trip. White sandy beaches and you can rent lounge chairs by the beach and have food and drinks served. I would definitely recommend renting a car, especially if traveling with children, to get around whenever you wanted. There's also a Wal-Mart about 8 minutes away, so we went there a couple of times just to get some things we forgot to pack. That was really convenient.

“beautiful, yet confusing”

it is a beautiful resort, my family loved the quaintness of it and the convenience to town. My issue was how confusing everything was with the meal plan, the staff wanted to sell you the "all-inclusive" packages and were very vague about how much menu items were if you didn't go for the "all-inclusive" package. It seemed as if they kept an eye on you as to whether or not you were getting the "package" for that day or not. I can't complain about the food, it was really good and we did choose to do the "all-inclusive" food and drink package 2 of the 4 days we were there. One other thing that we all noticed were all the tours that were going on around us as the staff really tries to put the sell on you to buy a time share. they immediately came up to us when we arrived and wanted to talk to us about a time share, but we quickly told them we weren't interested. because we didn't care to have a tour the once EXTREMELY friendly staff, then wanted nothing to do with us. We'd go back ONLY if the staff were more friendly (even if not interested in a time share) and eating and drinking became easier. (if you choose not to do a meal plan on any given day).

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — very pretty pool and beach, nice spa, good food, nice location and Autorro, the bartender
    • Disliked — the time share selling and if you aren't nterested in a time share the staff isn't that friendly any more. make eating and the meal plans a little easier for travelers

“Very good”

Sunset Fishermen Spa & Resort

We purchased our fractional ownership/timeshare in 2007. Needless to say after reading all of the negative reviews we had some trepidation in returning to the resort and seeing if it was all it was pro-ported to be. I have to say that I feel much more confident now than I did a year ago. We were invited to another sales session that would either upgrade us or convince us to buy at Tres Rios. Quite frankly now that they've decided not to build on Cozumel and Isla Mujeres (due to hurricane issues) we felt we were not prepared to invest any further until we could see tangibly what our future investment would produce. We're just average folks - so any investment we make means a lot to us! When I declined the invitation to attend the 'presentation', I was not bothered again and I really appreciated that me saying 'no - not at this time', was respected.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we were treated very well. There are definitely parts of this small resort that could use some updating. For example, we stayed in Rooms 347A & B - this was a great suite, two bedrooms, three bathrooms, full kitchen, dining and living area but no hot water in the kitchen. Whom-ever painted the place could do with an apprenticeship in our Red Seal program in Canada.

We invited two friends to accompany us. We had more than enough room without feeling we were encroaching on anyone's privacy. We all opted for the all-inclusive program. I just want to say that we did stay a second week in the area but at a different resort. By far, the all-inclusive rate at Fisherman's is very good value for the money. We received two meals per day plus unlimited drinks. We chose to have breakfast and supper at the resort - we all felt we received excellent value for our all-inclusive rate. Our dinners at the Italian restaurant were excellent. We were treated like gold.

We are booked already for another week in 2008.

Just wondering if anyone out there has figured out the trick to booking the VIP weeks ( we have two of them). I'm thinking that you would book them in the summer July and August and then deposit them with RCI. Any other thought out there? Quite frankly, I'm not sure they're worth the paper they're written on! Any other advice/guidance would be appreciated.

“Very nice stay”

Sunset Fishermen Spa & Resort

We have owned a studio unit at this resort since December 2004 and this was the first time we stayed there. We were very pleasantly surprised at how nice it is. We had a studio unit on the first floor that was steps away from the beach- Room 116B. The jacuzzi on the patio was a nice touch that we really enjoyed. The staff are all quite friendly.

Yes, it is a timeshare property and they do try and get you to buy or upgrade your membership. You don't have to buy and we did the sale presentation in exchange for 2 hour long massages at the spa.

They do offer a free shuttle into town twice daily at 9:30 and 11:00 am. Not sure how someone can complain about a free service, but someone sure did in another review. We never had to wait more than 5 minutes when we asked the from desk for a cab.

I walked into town 4 mornings with my dive equipment and it took me less than 20 minutes. I used Scuba Libre www.subalibre.com.mx, a very nice outfitter who had 3 days of diving (2 tanks per day) for the reefs off PDC for $170.

We only ate at the resort twice, once when we checked in and they had a buffet of appetizers and drinks (free of charge). The second time was on the Sunday night "Welcome party", again a buffet of appetizers and drinks, with a Mariachi band for entertainment. These dinners were offered at no additional charge.

They do offer a meal plan for $55 per day (the dinner buffet by itself is $38.50 per person.) that includes breakfast and lunch or dinner along with unlimited drinks during the day. A good deal if you don't want to go into town for your food or take a taxi to Wal-Mart or another store for your beer. Sol beer was less than $11 per 12 pack and Bacardi Coco was $10 per liter at Wal-Mart.

In addition to diving, we also went on the Fury Catamaran in Cozumel www.furycozumel.com (We join them on each of our trips to the PDC area). We also went to Xcaret and had a great time there looking at all the animals. The Turltles and Dolphins were our favorites.

Great dinners were had at CH Super Carnes (Calle 1 Sur between 20th and 25th) , HC De Monterrey (Avenida Constityenetes between 25th and 30th), Babes Noodle House, and at La Parilla on 5th Avenue.
