We stayed at Secrets Capri for the last five days of our Riviera Maya vacation. Our first four days, we stayed at Al Cielo Hotel in Xpuha- amazing place. See my review.
I chose this hotel based primarily from reviews at this website. Now here is what I think of Secrets Capri.
First the check in process. We arrived at the hotel at around 4pm and even if their official check in time is 3pm, our room was not ready and we had to wait another 45min. before we can get in our room. Victor the gentleman who checked us in was efficient although very serious, non smiling. He did not offer a good first impression. The lobbly was nice. We then went to the Seaside Grill for snacks while we wait. Food there was very good.
Our tropical view room was beautiful with a partial view of the ocean, a nice surprise. The bathroom was beautiful with marble floors but the jacuzzi tub is only good for one person which surprised me considerong this is an adults only resort. But the bigger problem was the water pressure from the faucet and shower. Very poor. I didn't expect that in such a nice hotel. Our last day there, the water was off for a long time at night because of pipe problems. I am not sure if it was a city issue or hotel issue. I wish the hotel staff would have alerted us of the water disruption so we could have avoided using the common area restrooms.
Next, the restaurants. I am used to eating at good restaurants not necessarily expensive but ones with genuinely "good food". Thus I prepared myself because this is an all inclusive resort so I kept my expectations low. Our first time together in an all inclusive resort. As I expected food was good to very good. Our first dinner was at the poolside buffet for the Mexican fiesta. Food was good, show was average. Had breakfast at La Riviera 3 times and that was good although the service is poor. Felipe was downright rude and Jesus just didn't care. Abrahan was the only shining star in that restaurant. We had dinner at Himitsu Japanese Restaurant twice. The decor and ambience was very nice.We had a regular dinner not the Hibachi table. We are not into the Benihana type restaurants , we are serious sushi lovers. The food there was good the first time and very good the second time and service was great. David was our server both times. The best service we got in any of their restaurants. My personal favorite. We also ate at Oceana restaurant which is their gourmet seafood restaurant. Went there at around 8pm and had to wait an hour for a table. So don't go there if you are very hungry. I was a little disappointed with the food, it was just OK. It was also very windy that night. I think the view would have been spectacular if we went there earlier when there is still light out. Portofino restaurant was nice and romantic(my husband's fave) Food was very good. We have traveled all over Italy so it will never compare to the authentic Italian food we had there so I based my opinion that it is an all inclusive resort. The last night was Caribbean night on the beach. Setting was nice but very windy. Food was very good. Entertainment was good enough. Room service food and service were excellent. My husband and I did like the restaurant by the beach very much where we had lunch most of the time.We particularly liked the Peruvian ceviche and the sashimi tiradito. Not to mention our server Marcos who was always smiling and tries very hard to make us feel special and catered to.
Pool was very nice. Great drinks at the swim up bar. Joined the water aerobics once. My husband got up early so we can pick a good spot with shade since my husband gets a bad rash if he stay under direct sunlight for over an hour. The beach was nice but the water was not clear. I expected that so I was not disappointed. I had my fill of the most perfect beach in Xpuha where I practically lived in the water. So I went in the water for a quick dip only on our last day.
Activities were abundant but not too many participated. My husband was looking forward to playing beach volleyball one afternoon but no one else showed up so he played a few minutes with the activities personnel. The pool volleyball was very popular and so was the Tequila tasting. Had Spanish lessons which was very funny and informative at the same time.
Had a massage and facial at their spa. Very relaxing and enjoyable, Expensive.
All in all a good experience. Will I go back? Probably,in fact this is one of three hotels we are considering for our renewal of vows next year (10 years anniversary). Right now though the front runners are Al Cielo Hotel and Iberostar Grand. Secrets a distant third.
