“Enjoyable Vacation”

Secrets Capri Riviera Cancun

6 May 2008
4/5 found this review helpful

We stayed at Secrets Capri for the last five days of our Riviera Maya vacation. Our first four days, we stayed at Al Cielo Hotel in Xpuha- amazing place. See my review.

I chose this hotel based primarily from reviews at this website. Now here is what I think of Secrets Capri.

First the check in process. We arrived at the hotel at around 4pm and even if their official check in time is 3pm, our room was not ready and we had to wait another 45min. before we can get in our room. Victor the gentleman who checked us in was efficient although very serious, non smiling. He did not offer a good first impression. The lobbly was nice. We then went to the Seaside Grill for snacks while we wait. Food there was very good.

Our tropical view room was beautiful with a partial view of the ocean, a nice surprise. The bathroom was beautiful with marble floors but the jacuzzi tub is only good for one person which surprised me considerong this is an adults only resort. But the bigger problem was the water pressure from the faucet and shower. Very poor. I didn't expect that in such a nice hotel. Our last day there, the water was off for a long time at night because of pipe problems. I am not sure if it was a city issue or hotel issue. I wish the hotel staff would have alerted us of the water disruption so we could have avoided using the common area restrooms.

Next, the restaurants. I am used to eating at good restaurants not necessarily expensive but ones with genuinely "good food". Thus I prepared myself because this is an all inclusive resort so I kept my expectations low. Our first time together in an all inclusive resort. As I expected food was good to very good. Our first dinner was at the poolside buffet for the Mexican fiesta. Food was good, show was average. Had breakfast at La Riviera 3 times and that was good although the service is poor. Felipe was downright rude and Jesus just didn't care. Abrahan was the only shining star in that restaurant. We had dinner at Himitsu Japanese Restaurant twice. The decor and ambience was very nice.We had a regular dinner not the Hibachi table. We are not into the Benihana type restaurants , we are serious sushi lovers. The food there was good the first time and very good the second time and service was great. David was our server both times. The best service we got in any of their restaurants. My personal favorite. We also ate at Oceana restaurant which is their gourmet seafood restaurant. Went there at around 8pm and had to wait an hour for a table. So don't go there if you are very hungry. I was a little disappointed with the food, it was just OK. It was also very windy that night. I think the view would have been spectacular if we went there earlier when there is still light out. Portofino restaurant was nice and romantic(my husband's fave) Food was very good. We have traveled all over Italy so it will never compare to the authentic Italian food we had there so I based my opinion that it is an all inclusive resort. The last night was Caribbean night on the beach. Setting was nice but very windy. Food was very good. Entertainment was good enough. Room service food and service were excellent. My husband and I did like the restaurant by the beach very much where we had lunch most of the time.We particularly liked the Peruvian ceviche and the sashimi tiradito. Not to mention our server Marcos who was always smiling and tries very hard to make us feel special and catered to.

Pool was very nice. Great drinks at the swim up bar. Joined the water aerobics once. My husband got up early so we can pick a good spot with shade since my husband gets a bad rash if he stay under direct sunlight for over an hour. The beach was nice but the water was not clear. I expected that so I was not disappointed. I had my fill of the most perfect beach in Xpuha where I practically lived in the water. So I went in the water for a quick dip only on our last day.

Activities were abundant but not too many participated. My husband was looking forward to playing beach volleyball one afternoon but no one else showed up so he played a few minutes with the activities personnel. The pool volleyball was very popular and so was the Tequila tasting. Had Spanish lessons which was very funny and informative at the same time.

Had a massage and facial at their spa. Very relaxing and enjoyable, Expensive.

All in all a good experience. Will I go back? Probably,in fact this is one of three hotels we are considering for our renewal of vows next year (10 years anniversary). Right now though the front runners are Al Cielo Hotel and Iberostar Grand. Secrets a distant third.

“This place rocks --incredible honeymoon!!”

Secrets Capri Riviera Cancun

My husband and I just returned from our 5 night, 6 day stay at Secrets for our honeymoon. We has such a lovely time. We think it was worth every penny spent!!

The resort is extremely clean and structured...never crowded...with very close attention to detail....and plenty of activities to participate in if you wish (like day excursions nearby/ watersports)..
..or just simply sit on the beach/by the pool and relax the day away. We met people from all over the US and the world, for that matter.

I'll start with the good/.....I could go on for days, but I'll try my best to sum it up . The staff was incredibly knowlegeable and friendly...we never once encountered a rude staff member! All went out of their way and exceeded our expectations. The food is very good...we especially enjoyed the seafood at Oceana. It seems like the food got better as the week went on! If you go to Secrets, you MUST try the buffet for breakfast...and lunch. Wow, what a spread!! You will be impressed by the variety! The drinks were good, some a little stronger than others...we mostly stuck to Corona. :-) The grounds are perfectly manicured and very beautiful. The pool is very large, complete with a fab swim up bar. The beach was nice as well, the staff cleaned the seaweed that accumulated SEVERAL times a day...yet another example of attention to detail. The sand was so soft and the water a beautiful turquois color! The room was also very upscale. We stayed in an oceanfront suite, with a great view of the ocean. The spa, although a little pricey, was a wonderful experience...I had the swedish massage and it was excellent!!! We also found the entertainment (ie Mexican night) to be top notch as well. As I mentioned, I could go on, but I will just leave it at this. This place rocks!

The only negatives we encountered were issues with our key cards (to our room) not working...but this was quickly alleviated as I simply took them to the concierge and they fixed the problem right away. Also, smoking is permitted just about everywhere on teh resort's grounds....We are not smokers and it really didn't bother us much unless we had someone smoking right beside us on the beach or pool...
we would just move when this happened. No big deal at all and shouldn't deter you from visiting Secrets!

Overall, our experience was excellent ...my husband and I have many travel plans lined up for the next year and Secrets will be TOUGH to beat!! We hope to go back within the next few years. If you are contemplating going, just GO!! You won't be disappointed!

Just got back from a week stay at Secrets and this hotel exceeded my expectations. I am a travel agent, and I have the opportunity to see lots of different hotel options, and talk to lots of people staying at hotels. I had gotten a chance to tour this hotel once, and finally got to stay here.

The hotel, facilities and grounds are great. Very clean, great temperature, and everything feels very close. It is not a huge property and I loved this.

The staff is exceptional. From bartenders, to house keeping and the entertainment staff, everyone is warm, fun and smiling. Tipping does help but people are great all the same.

The beach is in good shape, the water can be a little rough. The pools make up for it however and they have some amazing floating mats for an afternoon nap

Food was delicious. Italian to Asian, seafood and even the buffett. All great. The crepes made at the morning breakfast are a particular favorite.

Honestly, if you find yourself complaining about this hotel you are either destined to have a bad vacation wherever you go and you enjoy complaining, or something else bad happened and you are taking it out on the resort

Stay here, you will love it!

We loved our stay at Secrets Capri from April 9th through the 14th.

The resort appears to be cheapest when staying Wednesday through Monday (only researched 5 night stays).

American Airlines flights from RDU to MIA and onto CUN were a breeze despite so many AA flights being canceled. We actually arrived early.

Jeromi Transfers were outside of baggage claim waiting for us. The rate was 80USD roundtrip and well worth it.

Check-in was fast and easy. Champagne and cool towels were provided. Ask for the anniversary package before you arrive as it includes some special treatment and coupons.

Room
We had requested room 114 which is the Oceanview Junior Suite closest to the water in the South wing, or room 163 which is the closest to the water in the North wing. We ended up in 112 which was 2 rooms from the end in the South wing. The room was perfect, towel art, champagne in the room, fruit basket, etc. The only minor negatives were:-we could hear our neighbors celebrating their honeymoon one evening
-the fridge was luke-cool, but just have room service bring you a bucket of ice (might as well have them fill it with your favorite beverage while you're at it).
-the bed was hard, but just ask for a pillow top mattress pad. The pad took the bed from almost unbearable to perfectly comfortable.
-The DVD player picture was unviewable, but we were able to connect our portable DVD without any trouble.
-The iPOD connected to the TV for in room audio only worked sporadically (requires RCA cable).
-The Oceanview was non-existent. The Oceanview Junior Suites appear to all be on the ground floor which means a pool view unless you get room 114 or room 163. The convenience of the walkout patio made up for the lack of a view.

The Resort
The grounds were beautiful, the pool was perfect, the staff were incredibly friendly (tip or no tip). The lobby is very attractive but we never felt like spending much time there. Just enough time to get a drink at the lobby bar or some Mexican coffee. We enjoyed the cigar lounge more (only when there was no cigar smoking in progress). The lounge has a beautiful view over the pool and out to the sea.

The Beach
The beach is exactly as described by so many reviewers. Beautiful sand, plenty of shade, nice hammocks (although they seem to be mounted improperly causing your feet to rest well above your head. Not a problem until the breeze blows the sand into your face).

The problem with the beach is the poor water color, seaweed and rocks. Not nearly bad enough to keep us out of the water, but not the most inviting either. We took a few wonderful steps in and thought everyone who complained was crazy. The we stepped into a small depression where most of the rocks had collected and experienced the well documented unpleasantness. Aquasocks should solve the problem. We went without and regretted it.

Activities
There are many activities each day, but be aware that they are often cancelled due to wind, weather or other resort events (i.e. weddings, banquets, etc.) I looked forward to beach volleyball while on vacation and of the 7 scheduled times, they only played once. Pool volleyball was more consistent and a lot of fun. Archery only occured on one of our 5 days due to wind. Windsurfing was also a challenge due to too much wind or too little wind or the instructor not being present at that particular time. Be aware that windsurfing is included, but the instruction is not. Included is the windsurfing board and an hour of frustration trying to figure it all out on your own. Not included buy available from 20USD is some instruction. I didn't have any money on me since I was getting into the sea, so I spent my hour getting quite a cardio workout. Never did manage to right the ship and get to sailing.

Food
All of the food was above average. We are gourmands and love the dining experience. This was our biggest concern heading into our vacation. The restaurants were better than we expected from an all inclusive resort, but not quite into the realm of great or excellent.

Room Service - early breakfast before fishing - very, very good. Riviera - almost everyday for breakfast - very, very good.
Seaside Grille - lunches (various seafood tacos, ceviche and sashimi) - excellent.
Seaside Grille - first dinner (a little drunk) - average.
Oceana - second dinner (windy outdoor dining) - very, very good.
Himitsu - third dinner (nicest design, small portions) - very, very good.
Portofino - last dinner - very good.
Yaxche - dinner in PDC (unique Mayan cuisine) - very good, possibly excellent if we had order better entrees. We went with the most mayan dishes and didn't know exactly what to select. You must try to Panuchos with cochinita pibil - incredible. The Maya sampler was good but not what I really wanted and the Blacked Stuffed Turkey was very unique in appearance (jet black) but not fantastic.

Advice
-If you've selected Secrets, relax, enjoy your trip, everything will be at or above your expectations.
-don't overpack. We had outfits for day and evening. During the day we almost always wore our swimwear. Just a couple of shorts and t-shirts and outfits for each evening will get you through a 5 day trip.
-PDC is worth seeing once. Now that we've been there, I doubt we would visit the main section of town again. We would leave the resort for other activities, but no need to see the overpriced shops more than once.
-Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! We saw many people ruin their vacation within hours of arrival. Bathe in SPF 70 and get your tan under the less powerful rays back home. Most people were badly burned in under an hour.

Recap
American Airlines - Great (only delay came when leaving so we had to spend 2 more hours at the resort.)
Jeromi Transfers - Great (pickup was easy even with flight delay)
Hotel - Very Good
Room - Very Good (Deluxe Oceanview on the 3rd floor of North or South wing if you want real Oceanview)
Beach - Good (watch out for the rocks or wear aquasocks)
Food - Very, Very Good (this was our biggest concern and we were not amazed but we were not disappointed either.)
Activities - Good (I didn't get my beach volleyball fix).

I highly recommend Secrets and would return without hesitation. Thanks for a wonderful anniversary and we look forward to our next visit.

“Nice, but disapointing”

My wife and I love to travel and decided to return to the Mexico Riviera for the third time. We really enjoy the combination of white sandy beaches, turquoise seas, culture, and the festive atmoshphere that the area offers. I had high expectation for Secrets based upon the recommendations from a travel agent and reviews on the net.

The welcoming experience: Upon arrival, guests are sat in the lobby and offerred a flute of champagne with a cool towel. This is a nice touch, but also a convienent way of making up for a slow check in process. We booked the standard room through Travelocity. At the check in desk, we were told that only rooms with two twin beds were available. We paid $340 more to upgrade to a room with a King bed. Everyone we talked to at the resort, had the same experience. The check in experience was more typical of a time share than a resort.

The rooms: Comfortable bedding, nice decor, marble bath and shower, stocked fridge, and nice size balcony overlooking the pool. We had no problems with service and thought the rooms were nice.

The food: We liked the food at the italian restaurant the best. All of the restarurants serve small portions and offer slow service. The food was good, but not memorable. The service was poor and unfortunately memorable. We only ate at the buffet two times, once for breakfast and once for dinner - okay but nothing great.

The pool: Nice pool. No problem with getting a lounge chair. The pool area gets lively around happy hour. I was disappointed with the limited entertainment around the pool area. The quality of pool bar drinks are inconsistant. Nice place to relax.

The beach: Okay, not great. The sand beach directly in front of Secrets in the best in this stretch of the coast line. Sand obviously has been imported from elsewhere to make up this beach. The quality of the beach drops off significantly on both sides of the Secrets property. The water is clear and has a greenish-blue tint, but not the gorgouse turquoise color that we had experienced in the riveria myan area just south of Playa de Carmen. No problem getting a lounge chair to relax on the beach. I love to jog on the beach, but found it challenging due to the pitch and lack of hard packed sand. Secrets does have a jogging trail along the driveway in the front of the property.

The entertainment: Disappointing. Nightly entertainment was minimal. The newly wed game was held in a room suitable for a business conference, not for entertaining guests. Secrets relies upon an ametuer staff to coordinate activities and is reflective in both the quantity and quality of entertainment.. We did enjoy the buffet on the beach with the local dance troupe.

Overall experience: Secrets is a nice property, but I did not get a Mexican experience. Food and entertainment is more typical of an American resort. We did enjoy the adults only aspect of the resort.. We had stayed at the Iberostar Tucan twice and would recommend the Iberostar over Secrets for better food, pool, beach, entertainment, Mexican feel, service, and value.
