This was a great hotel. We felt like royalty staying there. First off, you walk in and they hand you champagne and hot towels for your face. They don't have a reception desk, but instead, they have smaller desks with 2 chairs in front of each one. You sit down and enjoy your drink while you wait for the next one to open. It is nice to sit down to check in. It makes you feel like your special to them (even though you know you're paying a lot). To make this easy, I will rate each categorie:
Hotel in general:5 stars. It was beautiful, and everyone is pleasant. It seemed very clean and they seemed to stay on top of things. The grounds were very clean and well kept. Breakfast in bed, dinner on the beach, and room service was great. They actually brought us breakfast in bed on the wrong morning, but they showed up the right moring too. We received 2 mornings of breakfast in bed. The dinner of the beach was nice. Food great. There is enough wind to keep the mosquitos off. The Spa is the only complaint. The couples massage we received was good, but the additional services were costly and not better than what you may receive in the US at a korean nail salon. For example, I got a pedicure done for $55 and it was no more than a foot soak, standard pedicure, and paint. I at least thought for that price there would be a foot and leg rub, but no. In my area, the same service costs $20. We upgraded to a beach front room (ground level)....worth it all the way. We walked out of our room and onto the beach. The shows were good....not broadway now, but entertaining nonetheless. They also have pool tables, tables with games (chess, jenga, etc), and a disco club. They had live piano playing everynight in the lobby or the piano/cigar lounge. The internet access they have there is very slow, but free; However, there are only 4 computers.
Food:5 stars....including the buffet. Make sure you take time to eat at each restuarant for dinner. The buffet is good to, but you much eat every where. The food presentation is beautiful. The food is great. The service was great. Drinks at the bar were hit and miss. Most nights they were pretty good and some nights they were too weak.
Beach:4 stars. The water was the biggest problem. The first day we got there, the water was pretty clear. The second day there was a lot of seaweed washing in, but it was like pine needles and was not that bad. The third day the water was a little merky and you could feel stuff touching your legs....ew. Because we had a beach front room, I would go grab towels and set them on 2 chairs pretty much in front of our balcony along with what ever we were reading. No one messes with anything, and then you can have your chairs reserved while you go to breakfast. There are stones on the bottom, but not coating it. They are hit and miss. Yeah, you might step on one, but for the most part, you can see to the bottom.
Pool:5 stars. Good alternative to the beach. Actually, almost everyday, we would go to the beach for 2 hours, wash off, then hit the pool for the rest of the time. The rafts go fast, so if your a pool person, eiher get there early (12 or sooner) or later (2p or later). The swim up bar and the area around it was always packed. It was like a real bar but in water.
Excursions:There is a little area right by the pool side that offers many sea adventures that depart right off their beach such as snorkle, scuba, and even a submarine ride. I snorkled ($40). It was pretty cool. Just take a towl and the water they provide and wear only your bathing suit. You have to walk out into the water to the boat, and it gets as deep as your chest. Your clothes will get wet and you have to hold the towel over your head, so there is no use in lugging anything along. The coral was beautiful and fish very colorful
We also did a Mayan ruins tour to Chichen Itza (one of the 'other seven wonders of the world'). It was very freakin hot, but so worth seeing. Then we swam in a Cenote which a cave with water. Worth it too. Actually, they have snorkling trips through caves.
We also did the lobster and steak dinner cruise. It was $92 each. The ship was very small, but god was the food good. The steak was so tender you could cut it with a fork. If your not up for close encounters with strangers, then you may not like this. If you like to chat with anyone, this was fun. We met some really cool people from England.
Shopping: The hotel offers a free bus to the luxury mall. Don't waste your time. Get a taxi to the markets that have authentic mexican made things. You can go to any of the luxury mall stores in America or probably Britain. We were upset about that. The hotel will get a taxi for you.
Trip recommendation:
Avoid the people at the airport right INSIDE the doors right before you exit. They will try yo rope you into a time share. There are 50 of them all weariing the same thing. They will act like they are going to help you get to your transportation, but they side track you into listening to theri speal.
Keep American money, don't trade for paso's. Maybe a few, but dont bother. Jus know your exchange rate. As of June 08, it is $10.20 pesos to $1USD. Make sure you take a lot of $1's and $5's for tipping. We would leave $5 on the bed every morning. At the restuarants we would leave $5 and buffet about $3. I dont know if it was too much or too little, but their were a lot of people not tipping at all. These people do work very hard to make your experience there good. Also, we tipped the drivers.
Haggle for prices if they come to sell stuff at the resort or if you are at the markets. If it's not what you would pay for it at home, walk away.....they will always say 'ok I give you deal'.
Sunblock sunblock sunblock. We are white....I even tanned before coming, and I still burnt through the block. Bug spray or itch cream may be useful too. I can't think of anything else at this time.
Please email if you have questions. I will post as many pics as possible and some video from my cell phone. Enjoy.
