Just got back on December 4th. I will try to touch on a few things that some people haven't.
Trip to hotel: We opted for Helidosa, what an awesome ride! For $144.00 per person, you get to the resort in 20 minutes, way before the crowds and in time to change your room before everyone else gets there. It is a beautiful and exciting way to start your trip off if you can afford it. Punta Cana airport very different. No toilet seats in the women's bathroom, gross.
Check in: No problems. Drinks on our arrival. They have B vitamins right on the counter to take in case of mosquitos, did not see one mosquito all week, there was a great breeze.
Room: We were in a "garden view" room - 3108 which was in the last building and actually had an oceanview. We loved it. It did have a musty smell and I was worried about my allergies, but it did fade over time and we left the wonderful breezes blow in when we were in the room anyways. We requested lounger chairs for on our balcony and the maids literally almost broke their backs to get them to us. Concierge called to make sure they had been delivered! The bedspread did smell musty and I also asked the maid for a new one (she did not speak English) so I smelled it in front of her and made a bad face. About 10 minutes later, she was there with a fresh smelling one with a smile on her face. You get sunscreen, body lotion, sewing kit, shampoo, body wash, and a little box with nail file, Q-tips and cotton balls on the vanity. Of course, room although a bit dated, was lovely with flowers and towel creatures.
Grounds: Absolutely beautiful! Even the public bathrooms are decorated with flowers and towel animals. No paper towels in the bathrooms here, real towels for you to dry your hands. Even plants next to some of the toilets. Lots of wildlife around too.
Pools: Cascade pool quieter, (except for the crowing chickens and peacocks). If you stay near this pool, these animal noises may bother you?? The BarRacuda bar there had all top shelf stuff, even Drambuie. They have salads they bring to the bar at lunchtime so you don't even have to leave the pool area for lunch if you don't want to. The large pool was cold, but refreshing. Pool floats you may want to purchase before arriving.
Beach: Huge waves, huge. Go 300 yards to the right of the resort (you are now off the property), take your Aquasocks because there is coral where you swim. Water very warm, warmer than the pool. There were some undertows so be careful to not go out too far. Always beach chairs available. I loved the beach beds and snoozed many times on them. They also have fun beach swings, makes for some great pictures. Sandfleas in the early a.m. - if you want sunrise pictures, take that bug spray along. They do need a few more bathrooms by the beach in my opinion.
Security: We watched from our balcony every night the guards standing by the watersports area, guns in hand. They try to hide them behind their leg, but we went down and talked to them. It made us feel secure to know they were there. Our building was at the end of the property, there was also an armed guard on the other side by the Excellence Club.
Casino: Small, not many people in there. About 20 slot machines, several blackjack tables with minimum 5 dollar bets. Roulette - saw a few people win on this. Keno, have heard to stay away that it does not pay well.
Restaurants: Everybody has different tastes, so not going to list my favorites. Just try different things and let it sink in a few seconds before you decide if you like it or not. I tried numerous items that I would have never eaten before (avacado ice cream, tequilla ice cream, celery juice, watermelon juice, caviar). A great suggestion that I had read so you don't tire of the buffets such as breakfast, eat one thing per day - one day pancakes, one day eggs, one day french toast, etc... and you will not be tired of the menu by the end of the week. Felix and his omelettes are awesome. Potatos have a definite different taste that I did not like at first, but by the end of the week loved 'em. So nice not to have to make reservations! Pizzas are yummy!
Service: Outstanding. They are always friendly and helpful. Everyone smiles and says "hola" and "it is my pleasure."
Shows: Great place to sit, drink a few cocktails and just have fun!
Sports: Most people do not know that behind the shops there is a whole sporting area with archery, pool tables, another bar and other things to do. Explore by the shops and you will find it.
Spa: Couple's massage was very relaxing, worth every penny and the spa itself is very pretty.
Disco: We were the only ones in it! Not much happening there when we were there.
Vendors: Pushy and annoying. I like that they are there, but they should not be right where everyone walks all the time and so often. They get on your nerves by about the 3rd day.
This is such a romantic environment. Saw so many couples snuggling and holding hands, you can't help but "feel the love." Ladies, bring your bikini - everyone else does. I have not worn one in 20 years and it was a blast. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, this place is great. We can't wait to go back...
