Just got back on December 4th. I will try to touch on a few things that some people haven't.

Trip to hotel: We opted for Helidosa, what an awesome ride! For $144.00 per person, you get to the resort in 20 minutes, way before the crowds and in time to change your room before everyone else gets there. It is a beautiful and exciting way to start your trip off if you can afford it. Punta Cana airport very different. No toilet seats in the women's bathroom, gross.

Check in: No problems. Drinks on our arrival. They have B vitamins right on the counter to take in case of mosquitos, did not see one mosquito all week, there was a great breeze.

Room: We were in a "garden view" room - 3108 which was in the last building and actually had an oceanview. We loved it. It did have a musty smell and I was worried about my allergies, but it did fade over time and we left the wonderful breezes blow in when we were in the room anyways. We requested lounger chairs for on our balcony and the maids literally almost broke their backs to get them to us. Concierge called to make sure they had been delivered! The bedspread did smell musty and I also asked the maid for a new one (she did not speak English) so I smelled it in front of her and made a bad face. About 10 minutes later, she was there with a fresh smelling one with a smile on her face. You get sunscreen, body lotion, sewing kit, shampoo, body wash, and a little box with nail file, Q-tips and cotton balls on the vanity. Of course, room although a bit dated, was lovely with flowers and towel creatures.

Grounds: Absolutely beautiful! Even the public bathrooms are decorated with flowers and towel animals. No paper towels in the bathrooms here, real towels for you to dry your hands. Even plants next to some of the toilets. Lots of wildlife around too.

Pools: Cascade pool quieter, (except for the crowing chickens and peacocks). If you stay near this pool, these animal noises may bother you?? The BarRacuda bar there had all top shelf stuff, even Drambuie. They have salads they bring to the bar at lunchtime so you don't even have to leave the pool area for lunch if you don't want to. The large pool was cold, but refreshing. Pool floats you may want to purchase before arriving.

Beach: Huge waves, huge. Go 300 yards to the right of the resort (you are now off the property), take your Aquasocks because there is coral where you swim. Water very warm, warmer than the pool. There were some undertows so be careful to not go out too far. Always beach chairs available. I loved the beach beds and snoozed many times on them. They also have fun beach swings, makes for some great pictures. Sandfleas in the early a.m. - if you want sunrise pictures, take that bug spray along. They do need a few more bathrooms by the beach in my opinion.

Security: We watched from our balcony every night the guards standing by the watersports area, guns in hand. They try to hide them behind their leg, but we went down and talked to them. It made us feel secure to know they were there. Our building was at the end of the property, there was also an armed guard on the other side by the Excellence Club.

Casino: Small, not many people in there. About 20 slot machines, several blackjack tables with minimum 5 dollar bets. Roulette - saw a few people win on this. Keno, have heard to stay away that it does not pay well.

Restaurants: Everybody has different tastes, so not going to list my favorites. Just try different things and let it sink in a few seconds before you decide if you like it or not. I tried numerous items that I would have never eaten before (avacado ice cream, tequilla ice cream, celery juice, watermelon juice, caviar). A great suggestion that I had read so you don't tire of the buffets such as breakfast, eat one thing per day - one day pancakes, one day eggs, one day french toast, etc... and you will not be tired of the menu by the end of the week. Felix and his omelettes are awesome. Potatos have a definite different taste that I did not like at first, but by the end of the week loved 'em. So nice not to have to make reservations! Pizzas are yummy!

Service: Outstanding. They are always friendly and helpful. Everyone smiles and says "hola" and "it is my pleasure."

Shows: Great place to sit, drink a few cocktails and just have fun!

Sports: Most people do not know that behind the shops there is a whole sporting area with archery, pool tables, another bar and other things to do. Explore by the shops and you will find it.

Spa: Couple's massage was very relaxing, worth every penny and the spa itself is very pretty.

Disco: We were the only ones in it! Not much happening there when we were there.

Vendors: Pushy and annoying. I like that they are there, but they should not be right where everyone walks all the time and so often. They get on your nerves by about the 3rd day.

This is such a romantic environment. Saw so many couples snuggling and holding hands, you can't help but "feel the love." Ladies, bring your bikini - everyone else does. I have not worn one in 20 years and it was a blast. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, this place is great. We can't wait to go back...

“Excellent Resort”

Secrets Capri Riviera Cancun

12 Dec 2005

My wife and I along with another couple stayed at the Capri from November 26 to December 3. We all agreed the resort was excellent. My wife and I have been vacationing in Mexico for the last 10 years and specifically in the Riviera Maya for the last eight years. Prior to Secrets our favorite resort was the Royal Hideway. This resort is almost it's equal without the extra $1000.00 per person per week. The restaurants were very good and we also thought the buffet was excellent. As for other reviews complaining about the smell from the swamp next to the property. This area just experienced a major hurricane, the swamp used to be a forest/ jungle. We watched a parade of dump trucks dumping new beach sand, palm trees being re-planted and non-stop work being done not only at Secrets but all aroung Playa del Carmen. Our country could take lessions from the Mexican's when it comes to disaster recontruction. So be a little patient. We had no issues with thin walls and excess noise. I had sent an e-mail to the Resort prior to our arrival requesting a specific room. Not only did they honor my request, they also left a bottle of wine for us. My buddy and I also did the Resort diving course which included a nearby ocean dive and 2 dives at Cozumel. This is a very good value all inclusive for $220.00ea. A word about the Apple & Olympus reps at the resort. They are very unprofessional, leaving nasty messages as we did not come to meet them. They claimed they they had to reconfirm our return flight. Since they already had this information I did not feel the need to interrupt my vacation on their terms. The Olympus rep even threatened to cancel or pre-paid return trip to the airport. My wife finally went to see him, he just tried to sell her on their tours. We heard Apple's rep was doing the same thing. We actually had the Resort arrange for our return transportation to the Airport and it was excellent like the rest of the services they provided. Hopefully we will return to Secrets for at least 10 days in the spring. One week is just not enough.

“Great place - some minor problems, but an overall "A"”

OK, let me preface this review by mentioning that I am a picky traveler, so the criticisms I have of Secrets Capri may seem rather, well, picky.

I agree with some of the other reviews about some room noise, the beach dropping off after 15 feet out, not all the restaurants being open every night, beds too firm, water temp changing in the showers, lack of entertainment at night, etc. Those are all true. However, in my experience at all inclusives across the Caribbean, unless you are willing to spend mega bucks for the few ultra resorts, you're going have these kinds of minor problems everywhere you stay. And they should't detract from the overall experience at Secrets.

First, any remaining hurricane damage was barely noticeable. Except for some isolated drywall and painting work, the only evidence of Wilma was some trimmed-back palm trees and the lack of vegetation in the "untamed" area next to the resort.

The food was, in a word, excellent. The Mexican buffet was, oddly enough, the worst, and we felt the Oceana seafood restaurant was the best. The best part was that you could order and modify the menu at will. We loved the steak and shrimp entree, but wanted the lobster tail, too, so we asked and voila! they combined the two and we got both. That was a constant theme throughout our stay.

The service was very good - especially the bartenders and waiters. Always polite and very attentive. I don't understand the posts on here criticizing the service. Unless you expect a personal valet, there should be no complaints.

The facilities were very nice. As has been noted in several reviews, the bifurcated pool is very nice. It may be pure coincidence, but the swim-up pool bar is in the "warm" side of the pool. Hmmmm. The lobby was nice, and watching the workers feed the turtles in the lobby pool with bananas was very interesting - who says those suckers are slow?

Rooms were above average. We were in a room with 2 full size beds the first two nights, and that was awful for a large person like myself who likes to actually sleep in the same bed as my wife. Moving to a room with a king bed made all the difference - both in comfort and in space. Make sure you request that, or put yourself on a waiting list when you check in if they have none available. Like I mentioned above, compared to other resorts I've visted around the Caribbean, these rooms, baths, beds, pillows, etc. are far above average, and the maid staff does an excellent job of cleaning them (even mopping the entire room) each day. The long and the short of it is that, hey, if you're spending a lot of time in your room, there's something wrong with you. The insides of your eyelids look the same anywhere, I always say.

I would highly recommend Secrets Capri. We went with 3 other couples who also (other than terrible hangovers) loved this place, too. Once they get back to full capacity, I think many of the small problems will take care of themselves, but still a wonderful place regardless.

“A Sunny Vacation”

Secrets Capri Riviera Cancun

7 Dec 2005

We just returned from the Secrets Capri. Most of what is stated in the reviews on this site is true The beds are firm, the walls are thin, and the food and the service great. What you may not have read was the water temperature in the shower changed from hot to cold without warning (not fun on a sun burn). There is no "tropical" view because the foilage is gone due to the hurricane. That did not bother us but there was a musty smell coming from the standing water in the surrounding swamps (this may have been dissipating by the time we left or we were just used to it). I suppose if you never venture to these sides of the hotel you may never notice but if you have a tropical room on the first two floors I think you will. And the last, but not least, was the biting flies. We met two other couples and all agreed that these flies were awful. They were not everwhere but definitely take some anti-itch cream.
All of this being said, our vacation was still great. The staff was wonderful and very attentive. The food was very good. The only down fall was that not all 5 restaurants were open each night. There was 4 the first two nights and 3 the next two nights. They rotated so you are still able to eat at all of them. I think this was because they seemed to only be about half occupancy. The beach was the best part. It was clean (in front of the hotel) and plenty of lounge chairs.

My wife and I were at Secrets from Nov. 20-27. We are in our later thirties and have three young children at home.

This resort was perfect for us. It was upscale with incredible service and very good food. To me the best thing was the service. Anything you wanted was given full attention 95% of the time. When we had a request it was taken care of promptly.

We ordered room service a couple of times and paid no attention to the menu. Ordered what we wanted and got it exactly as asked for. Maids were incredible keeping the rooms spotless.

We had an ocean front room that at dusk seemed to have a large number of little flies (non-biting) attracted to the patio. One call resulted in someone coming and spraying the area which eliminated the problem.

Beds are good for a resort in this area but not quite the heavanly sleeper. Good TV selection for late movies and mini-bar is adequate. Tubs are too small but shower was excellent.

Food was also very very good. Compare favourably to most high end restaurants anywhere in North America although you could tell it was more mass production then made speacially for you. But very tasty, great presentation and smaller protions were perfect as allowed you to have appetizer and dessert.

Beach was good but going into the water has a little touch because quite rocky for the first 15 feet in the water. Lots of Palapa's and service on the beach is great for drinks or food.

Pool is excellent with great loungers but my wife found it a little loud in the late afternoon when the music started and we wanted to nap. We went to the far side and could barely hear the music.

Gym was very good and spa was top notch according to my wife who is very experienced in this area. While expensive, the facial she received was one of the best ever even compared to high end spas in Arizona and Hawaii.

Drinks were excellent and found the entertainment to be quite good.. Three times during the week there was entertainment on the beach with bonfires, drinks and good music or football.

Finally, the staff was very very good. Friendly people who were happy to have us there after the hurricane. They seem to enjoy what they do and understand that service is what sets them apart from all other resorts.

Little things like brand name ketchup (heinz), peanut butter etc. are things we take for granted and enjoy but are seldom available in many Carribean and Mexican resorts but were here.

I would highly recommend this resort for anyone who wants to be serviced to a high degree, wants to unwind and relax, have a quieter week with great food and drink.
