“Loved Playa and Tropical Casablanca”

Tropical Casablanca

1 Nov 2007

My husband and I returned recently from an awesome vacation in Playa del Carmen. The trip was amazing and without any major glitches! Playa was a super destination for us. We are both hard working professionals (with no kids) and live by the adage “work hard play harder”. Playa fit the bill! Great beach, a ton of restaurants and shops, nightlife and touristy stuff. Our hotel was perfect for us. Great location and not huge like some of the all inclusive places. This place was small and intimate, close to the beach, like right across the street close and one block from 5th Avenue. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful with tropical plants and palm trees. The hotel even has it’s own cenote with fish and turtles in it. The swimming pool is nice for a dip after a day at the beach or to just relax with your morning coffee.
We did a couple of day trips, one to Tulum – beautiful - and one to the island of Cozumel – very cool!
I have no hesitation in recommending this travel destination as well as the Hotel Tropical Casablanca.

This hotel is located one block from the beach, on a quiet side street only a few blocks from the bustle of the main drag, 5th Avenue -- truly convenient to everything. There is a dive shop on site, which is *very* convenient for those 8:30am morning dives. It was the easiest dive vacation I have ever taken in the area: just get up, walk outside to be greeted with coffee and cookies while the dive shop staff set up my gear. Then, suit up, walk a block to the boat and wake up hitting the water.
A low-cost transport from the Cancun airport was booked by the hotel to meet me upon arrival so I did not have to deal with the chaos outside of the airport doors. The hotel was *impeccably* clean and the grounds were lush and welcoming, smelling of all the flowering plants. The rooms were set back off the street and there is a nice clean pool in the forefront for swimming, relaxing under the palms, and people watching. They had a cenote right on the property that had cute little turtles living in there they let me feed lettuce. There was also a really great view of the ocean and Cozumel from the roof but I am not sure I was supposed to be up there:)
The room came equipped with all sorts of wonderful treats: a bottle of wine and real wine glasses, robes, a refrigerator, nice toiletries (no Rose Venus soap!!), soft sheets and towels, and I found out the staff will happily arrange to stock the fridge with whatever you request prior to arrival!! While there, staff will also get you anything you want from tours to rental cars to groceries to delivery food and were all extremely nice, knowledgeable, helpful, and polite. It was not your typical experience with a Mexican hotel. The service was to 5 star standards and the room only cost $70USD!!!
They also have a large house on site they said could accommodate groups of up to 10 and comes with a cook. They have a dive shop in Tulum too that can organize cave and cenote diving for guests. All the dive guides were really good and friendly and it was nice to hang out with them at the hotel at the end of the day, learning about the animals of the reefs. I got to experience diving in the ocean and the cenotes with barely leaving the hotel! I have been to Playa many times over the last 13 years and this is by far the BEST hotel I have ever found in the area, not to mention an excellent value.

    • Liked — convenience and the wonderful, helpful staff
    • Disliked — the bars down the road played their music too loud on 2 nights out of 8 so I couldn't hang outside. Room was still quiet enough to sleep, though.

After checking in to another nearby hotel and having several problems with my room I walked around to check out a couple of other places and was lucky enough to stumble upon Tropical Casablaca. I felt as if Jose who was at the desk adopted me as he made the transition from my other hotel very easy and he was so accomodating. My room was large and clean with a fridge and small balconey. Best of all the bed was a very comfortable pillowtop - much better than most of the hard beds found in this area! The grounds are very pleasant with the gardens, cenote and great pool. The beach is steps away. The staff/owners were warm and friendly and I was really happy with my stay!

Dec. 20, 2006 Just returned fro two weeks in Cancun and Playa. The Tropical Casablanca is a very nice downtown small hotel. The managers are a couple from Canada (Niccola and Doug) who also run the Abyis dive shop next door. They were on site all the time and very accomidating The hotel is very clean with beautivul gardens and a small cenote with fish and turtles, There is no television and there was a problem with the hot water but they were installing a new hot water tank while we were there. Our room had two double beds shower, great air conditioner and a fridge, $78.00 a night. No safe and no resteraunt. The Blue Parrot beach club is a short block away as is Fifth Ave. with great shops and resteraunts. Try La Perralla Resteraunt, great place for food and drinks good food and service. (Especially waiter Marco)
we ate there several times and with several Margaritas our meal averaged around $40.00- 50.00. also a great spot to people watch. Although there are several great small bars we also found the Tequila Barrel another great spot to sit and relax and enjoy people watching. Try [----] for lots of information and reviews of trips and advise.

We stayed at Tropical Casablanca for a week in March, 2006. The hosts, Reyna and Yudy, are outstanding people!! The hotel is very clean. The swim pool was kept perfect all week. Clean sheets and towels were delivered everyday. I would highly recommend this hotel to anybody who was looking for a small, quaint, inexpensive hotel that is close to the beach (across the street through Costa del Mar). The two problems that we had were bearable, but still an anoyance. First, the building next door is being converted to condos and construction started every day at 7 am and lasted until 5:30pm. The wall in my room was next to the construction so there was no avoiding the noise. Ask for a room by the pool. Secondly, If you have sensitive hearing, and want to get to bed early, bring earplugs! Between the music at the Blue Parrott across the street (until 4am) and the music on 5th avenue (until 3am) it gets loud. I turned the ac on and wore earplugs and it was ok. With all that said, I would still recommend anybody to this hotel!!
