my husband and i live in playa del carmen. we have heard wonderful things about esencia and are always looking for great places nearby to stay . we have stayed at or have had friends or family members who have stayed at (or work at) many of the hotels in the area, so we have a lot of knowledge about what there is to offer in the area. esencia is definitely the best! we got a room with a private plunge pool and it was fantastic. since the hotel is so small and the rooms really are completely private, you feel as if you are the only one there. not like at larger resorts where you can sometimes hear through the walls...
i would say we have pretty high standards for food. before breakfast, the staff will bring coffee and/or tea and pastries and leave them outside for you to enjoy whenever you wake up. just be warned that some birds in the area will steal some pastries! one morning i went out and had one, and when i returned later to get one for my husband, two were missing and i couldn't figure it out. so we left the glass doors open and we finally did see them in action. it is actually pretty funny.
breakfast at the esencia is fantastic. hard to find good breakfast in the area, but we were definitely impressed. as far as lunch and the day menu goes, the ceviche is great. maybe the best i have ever had. the sandwiches had a lot to be desired though. very bland tasting. a buffalo chicken sandwich had no buffalo in it at all! i would give the dinner 4 stars. had some high points, but nothing out of this world.
the service during out stay was impeccable. on the beach, there are enough palapas for everyone there, as well as chairs by the pool. another plus since at larger resorts, you often have to go out early to 'reserve' a good spot.
of course playa del carmen is only 15 minutes away so if you want to visit, it's a great little town. but once you get to the esencia, you will most likely not want to leave at all!
