The Royal Playa Del Carmen is a beautiful hotel and I highly recommend it! My husband and I (31/29) have stayed at other all inclusives (Aruba, Jamaica) before and this is by far the best one!
We went from May 3-May10th. We stayed in room 283 with a Royal Jr. Suite Ocean View.
We picked out the room at 1am EST on May 1st and had no problems. The website made us “try again” just once as it must have been busy.
After waiting to get through customs for almost an hour….we arrived to the Royal with Olympus Tour bus and all was good. We were the first stop. Took about 45 minutes. We got to our room within 5 minutes of arriving and one “white shirt”/Time share person trying to reel us in…Just said “no thanks”. Just make sure you print out your room confirmation!
We only had another “white shirt” approach us at the end, and again it was “No, Thank you”.
Room:
The room was immaculate, with Jacuzzi, beautiful stone tiles everywhere, canopy drapes, hammock on balcony,
Mini bar was stocked almost every day as well as the toiletries. We got turn down service with candles lit, and chocolates almost every night and two towel art nights…so cute!
THE BED was like magic. That has to be the most comfortable bed in all of Mexico. I can’t imagine a bed being more comfy. As soon as I put my head on the pillow, I was OUT like a light every night.
Food:
We didn’t care for any of the menus at Chef Plate, so we didn’t make a reservation.
We ate at the Spice Buffet the first night, and it was pretty impressive for an all inclusive. Breakfast every morning there was good. Omlette’s made to order, great pancakes, and mimosas!
We ate at Asiana’s twice (and I loved the sushi rolls, and I’m a sushi snob!) and also Maria Marie’s twice (my husband LOVED the lamb and we both were head over heels for the mashed potatoes w/bacon/smoky flavor), and we also ate
at Il Pescatore twice. I loved their pasta dishes…the Carbonara, Alfredo and Pesto were all TERRIFIC! I was completely impressed.
Pelicano’s was ok. Had the cheese pizza there and guacamole and chips…nothing to write home about.
We had room service almost every night, late night about 1am or so and had burgers, hot dogs, fries, or their home made potato chips (awesome!).
We also had room service for breakfast one morning which was very nice. My one complaint: no real Mexican food.
I was craving, bean burritos, rice, cheese. Nada. I asked for it once at Maria Marie’s but it wasn’t really what I wanted.
The fruity drinks were watered down, but that was ok, didn’t do too many of those. Had Champagne and Dos Equis a lot. The best tequila they had there (in lobby bar only I found) was Don Julio. The lobby bar also has the friendliest bartenders!
Hotel/Grounds/Beach/Pool:
I woke up about 8:30 every morning and reserved beach/pool chairs, and always found some. I would put towels down and also a book or drinks or suntan lotion, on top of my towel, to ensure it wouldn’t be removed.
The beach was beautiful and I met the famous “Alexis”! The beach butlers would come around very often to get you drinks, cold towels and frozen grapes. I always got a spot underneath the huts as my hubby needs shade. Then in the afternoon, we’d move to the pool (as it was hard to get any shade on the beach in the afternoon anyway b/c of the sun).
The pool was cold at times, but having the chairs in the water by on really hot days was key. We went in the Jacuzzi outside during the day a few times too. Very nice. They also came around for drinks.
We used the swim up bar once as it usually was crowded and shady and cold.
The swing bar was cool, and got really happening in late afternoons.
The gym was great, with “Lifestyle” equipment. I didn’t take any classes. I wanted to do a yoga class one morning, but it wasn’t in the gym when I went, so I just used the treadmill. I found out the next day that the classes are held on the gazebo when I passed by .
We loved sitting in the lobby bar before dinner every night and feeling the warm breeze flow through. They had mariachi bands and shows there a few nights which was fun. The area is huge and welcoming.
The 24 lounge got a lot of use by us. We played lots of pool and ping pong, and lots of drinks in there.
You are able to take a bottle with you, which was great!
Didn’t use the spa, but all the services looked terrific!
We saw a few weddings there, but it never was intrusive on our space. Some were in the ballrooms, and some were on the beach.
We met a lot of great people from NY and also Canada. Hello to you all if you’re reading!
Everyone at the hotel was VERY friendly and were very helpful with everything. The service everywhere was exceptional.
The tours we did were: Alltournative – Mayan Zipline & Tulum, which was great (a long day, but worth it) and also we did a Cozumel trip with Eagle Ray divers. That was the best snorkeling we ever have done. Saw an Eagle Ray, Barracudas, tons of big rainbow colored fish, eels, squid, everything!!! Even though the ferry and boat we were on made me nauseous, and the day was long, the snorkeling was simply amazing! .
We went to 5th Avenue twice. Once to just walk, once to shop. There were great bands that played, tons of restaurants that are very modern looking and beautiful. We didn’t eat there, just stopped at one place for a drink. The shop owners there will call for you almost every other store to come in, but that’s how they are. We also heard about two guys being robbed by the police there, so PLEASE do not venture off 5th avenue, especially at night. Even if it’s just for a shortcut and a quick block, don’t do it. We heard of more stories about the police, once we got home.
I wish we were still there and we would totally go back to the Royal! For an all inclusive, it cannot be beat!
