We just stayed at the Fairmont Mayakoba last week. How they received a AAA Five Diamond award is beyond comprehension. First, the front desk staff is disorganized and definitely not customer service oriented. Our room was not ready even after the official check-in time of 3:00 pm. They actually gave us a tacky beeper that would buzz us when the room was ready! Then, we were given a double bed room, even though we had confirmation, in writing, that we were to receive a King bed room. Our package included a $250 F&B credit but upon check-out, it was not applied and we had to fight for it. There were other guests disputing false phone charges so you really must review your bill with a fine tooth comb or you will get ripped off!!!!
We were very disappointed with the physical property. First, you cannot view the ocean or beach from the main part of the property so you feel like you're in the middle of a Disney park...or in Arizona. To get to the beach requires a golf cart ride, definitely not convenient. Their were many areas of the property that were not well-maintained and were already showing wear and tear. Rooms did not feel really clean and didn't smell fresh.
The food was OK, but nothing extraordinary. The wait staff was friendly and appeared to be trying so they were an upgrade over the front desk staff!
During our stay, there were a couple of large groups so it appears they cater to this type of business...lots of small kids and babies too (so annoying to deal with crying babies when trying to relax at the pool). The nicest restaurant was closed one evening for a group dinner!
On the positive side, the spa is very nice and our treatments there were great.
We would not return to this hotel and we will not recommend it to others.
