Overall, a very nice resort. We traveled with 2 small children, ages 4 and 6. The rooms and physical facilities were beautiful, some of the nicest we have stayed in. They were spacious and very tastefully decorated. The Kids Center was outstanding.

The hotel has a corporate focus. There were pros and cons to this. It seemed very quiet most of the time as most guests were at conference rooms and activities. This made it easy to get beach chairs, get restaurant reservations, etc., but it was also a bit odd to feel like you were one of the few people actually on vacation. I would say overall this was a positive, but it did lose the intimacy of a smaller resort.

The restaurants were just okay. We never had a bad meal but never had a great meal. A small convenience store on sight was nice for light snacks and meals. Overall, prices for food were what we would expect for a resort. But drinks were extremely expensive. As a bonus, kids under 5 ate free.

My biggest disappointment was that I did not know the property for the most part is situated away from the beach. To protect the environment, the hotel and major restaurants had to be built in the mangrove swamps. Canals ran through the property which were quite charming. To get to the beach and approximately 10% of rooms actually located on the beach, you had to take a golf cart or boat. While the golf carts ran frequently, this was an inconvenience. Overall, since most of the facilities were located inland, we felt like we were at a jungle resort vs. a beach resort. Had I realized this was the way the property was set up, I would perhaps not have been as disappointed about the lack of beach presence during the majority of the time.

We also found service above average, but not outstanding. They made an effort, but seemed to often fall just short at times.

We enjoyed day trips from the hotel to Mayan ruins at Coba and Tulum and Xcaret park.

If we were to return to the area, we would seek out slightly better properties, recognizing that there is a good chance we would end up back at the Fairmont. So...pros and cons. Overall, a great trip!

We just stayed at the Fairmont Mayakoba last week. How they received a AAA Five Diamond award is beyond comprehension. First, the front desk staff is disorganized and definitely not customer service oriented. Our room was not ready even after the official check-in time of 3:00 pm. They actually gave us a tacky beeper that would buzz us when the room was ready! Then, we were given a double bed room, even though we had confirmation, in writing, that we were to receive a King bed room. Our package included a $250 F&B credit but upon check-out, it was not applied and we had to fight for it. There were other guests disputing false phone charges so you really must review your bill with a fine tooth comb or you will get ripped off!!!!

We were very disappointed with the physical property. First, you cannot view the ocean or beach from the main part of the property so you feel like you're in the middle of a Disney park...or in Arizona. To get to the beach requires a golf cart ride, definitely not convenient. Their were many areas of the property that were not well-maintained and were already showing wear and tear. Rooms did not feel really clean and didn't smell fresh.

The food was OK, but nothing extraordinary. The wait staff was friendly and appeared to be trying so they were an upgrade over the front desk staff!

During our stay, there were a couple of large groups so it appears they cater to this type of business...lots of small kids and babies too (so annoying to deal with crying babies when trying to relax at the pool). The nicest restaurant was closed one evening for a group dinner!

On the positive side, the spa is very nice and our treatments there were great.

We would not return to this hotel and we will not recommend it to others.

We traveled to the Fairmount Mayakoba for a medical conference with our 8 month old son, we're big Four Seasons fans and the Fairmount Mayakoba came very close to meeting these high standards.

First off, this is a BIG property that caters to conferences, there are also a fair number of young families with smaller children (mainly babies)...so not a great choice for younger singles.

The main issue that keeps this property from getting a "Five Star" rating in my opinion is that when a large group or conference hits the property, the service falls apart a little. We attended right after the PGA Tour had left, the resort was relatively empty and the service was just phenomenal, however, halfway through our stay a number of large corporate conferences arrived and the service suffered. I got the impression (though I have no proof) that the resort supplements it's staff when busy with "temporary" workers that just aren't well trained in service....

We stayed at a Signiture Casita, near, but not on the beach. It came with a personal butler, who was a FANTASTIC help when it came to arranging for a crib by the pool or on the beach for our son, washing baby bottles, etc. however, others were less thrilled with the service provided by other butlers...

The rooms are very nice, beautiful bathrooms with natural light, however, virtually all rooms overlook the mangrove marsh, only the most expensive rooms have ocean views.

The beach is great, the pools are great (one caveat, the pools are not heated...and they really need to be for a February stay) aparantly there are plans to install poool heaters in the near future.

The food is typical "high end hotel food" not bad, but nothing spectacular. There are three restaurants, one casual, one mid end, and one high end. Kids are not particularly welcome at the high end restaurant, but they're not expressly banned, and during our stay we did see a few baby strollers in the high end restaurant. We ate at the high end restaurant later during our stay, and the system had collapsed a bit, the service was lacking...food was OK, again not great.

Since the property is SO large (a fair amount is Mangrove preserve) transportation to the beach and to the lobby and restaurants is via golf cart. The service is usually pretty prompt, but on a few occasions we did have a 5-10 minute wait...

In closing, we loved this place, I felt this was the perfect vacation for a couple with young children, however older kids might be bored. The staff was great, the grounds are beautiful, the rooms were very nice. Frankly, the service was better than at the Four Seasons in Nevis. If you're Ok seeing small children (babies) on
vacation, and don't mind sharing the resort with a corporate meeting or medical meeting, then it's difficult to imagine a nicer vacation.

We were at Fairmont Mayakoba from April 1-6, 2008. The hotel is full of "dollar vultures" and crooks. Do not trust anyone at the hotel. We were charged for things that we did not use -- valet parking. Our hotel room was fully paid for via Apple Tours but they still levied charges adding up to hundreds of dollars in resort fees, etc. We rented a car for a day from the hotel premises (Carlos -- he is the guy who sits in the travel agency in the hotel) and we were asked to pay in US dollars in cash and then our credit card was also charged for $86.75. He refused to give us any receipt for the cash payment and then took an imprint of our credit card to boot. He then used the credit card imprint to charge us again. He realized this when we returned to the US.

FULL OF CROOKS. DO NOT GO TO THIS HOTEL. The rooms are nothing to write home about. We were in room 609 it was far from everything. The food in the restaurants are way, way overpriced $$$$$$$$$!!! This is extortion at best. We felt like captive victims in the premises with our US dollars there for the taking by the folks who run this place. You are better off staying at a different hotel and taking the cab to downtown Playa for meals etc.

Clutch your wallet tight if you dare to stay here and DO NOT TRUST THE CAR RENTAL GUY named CARLOS and BUYER BEWARE IN GENERAL.
