“Pleasantly Surprised”

Hotel La Paz

3 Apr 2008

Something must have changed about this hotel as our GAP group was pleasantly surprised after reading the poor reviews here. Just a pretty, pleasant , inexpensive hotel, with good hot showers, no AC, no TV but a veranda on the ground floor that serves breakfast, a maid that liked to leave our towels in the shape of animals, pleasant desk clerks ( who don't understand much English). I loved waking up with all the birds in the morning. It is very conveniently located : 3 blocks from the beach, 2 from the strand, the colectivos are just around the corner and the airport bus is also nearby as is Avenue Juarez. There is a fair amount of construction (noise) going on in the surrounding area so factor that in but my roommate and I thoroughly enjoyed our large room upstairs.

This is a hotel used as part of one of Gecko´s Central American tours. We arrived a few days ealier and had organised an additional four nights at the hotel, prior to the tour starting. We arrived and the lady at reception spoke no English, but through sign language, we were able to convey to her we were checking in. Well, when we saw our room, we both nearly cried. It was baking, so we turned on the a/c and the ceiling fan. Big mistake, as the fan started up, it lurched from the ceiling and started whacking against the ceiling. We could see it was about to come spinning off and threaten to decapitate us, so I had to dive underneath this precariously lurching fan, to turn it off. Sigh. Not a good start. Then came the bathroom. Having used the toilet, we couldn´t flush it. And no, we didn´t put toilet paper in it. We attempted to flush for half an hour, then realising we couldn´t get any assistance (nobody spoke English), we decided to cut our losses and find another hotel. Upon walking around the corner, we found a delightful hotel which cost only US$6 more than the hovel known as Hotel La Paz.
Save your money and don´t save here. If it´s a choice between Hotel La Paz, or the beach? Take the latter.

My wife and I stayed there last spring. The rooms were simple, no TV and there were no frills, but, the rooms were clean and the rate VERY reasonable. We spent a lot of time away from our rooms so we didn't care it wasn't fancy. We stayed there 5 nights. They even cook breakfast for you, which we ate outside under a gazebo (Very good). Not a 5 star hotel, but, we liked it.

“Horrible Hotel”

I have travelled Mexico and stayed in youth hostel the for months. On my way back, I decided I would have a nice hot shower the last night of my trip and decided to stay at hotel La Paz for 30USD (much more expensive that a hostel!!)in Playa Del Carmen. What a mistake. The sheets had not been changed, the shower floor was dirty, the service was horrible when I asked if they could change the sheets and clean the room a little. I remained polite but they did not. To top it all, I got up the next day with little spots on my body. I discovered later they were from flees, probably in the mattress. I have met two other American couples who suffered from the same problem as me and when we confronted the owner, he said we brought back american disease in Mexico and we are now trying to get away without paying our rooms. If you look on internet, the pictures of this hotel look wonderful, but when you get there it is a whole different story. My only advice - if you want something cheap, do not go to this hotel, spend a bit more time looking for something that will not include flees for free!!
