I have stayed at Riu in Cancun & absolutely love these places. It really is a great bang for the buck. If you enjoy the all inclusive, these places are great. They do not skimp on the details and the service is spectacular. Everyone on staff is friendly & willing to meet your every need.

The food in the restaurants is wonderful!! The buffet is good, nothing spectacular but more than adequate. As with most places where booze is included it seems to be watered down. But, you can always ask for a premium brand - no problem.

There are tons of chairs around the pool, on the beach & a sections of hammocks in the shade. No shortage of places to lounge away the hours.

I have just returned after a 5 night stay with a girlfriend. We are in our 50's and love to have fun. I have stayed at the Iberostar ( which is a beautiful complex with great food but more expensive than the Riu and far from Playa del Carmen) and wanted to stay at the Barcelo(although I think the beach here could be much calmer) but after the reviews I changed my mind. I contacted the Barcelo manager and told him about Trip Advisor reviews and he did not seem to care which concerned me. Anyway I am a flight attendant and have traveled all over the world for 30+ years. The Riu is above average. The pool is much bigger than it looks in the pictures. The beach/pool has tons of room for everyone and shade too. The "rocks" manmade are fine, they are saving the beach and they do look like rocks now. But the surf here is pretty rough. We only went in the ocean a few times. And we got a sunburn in just 45 min w/o sunscreen after using sunscreen for 2 days so be careful. We wanted to take a snorkel and parasail trip but in the 5 days there was only one day w/o strong winds and we missed it. So if you get a good day get out and take the water trips otherwise you may not get a chance. I was told by other guests that the parasail was a blast because you are taken out by wave runner to the boat which adds some extra fun. The price was as good at the hotel as anywhere else on the beach or in Playa. Worse case is you can go into Playa Del Carmen and there is a beach there that you can rent equipment and walk out. Check out a snokel/ parasail stand on the beach at the around 10th street. There is a small round bar next to it and a massage area. I felt very comfortable with the guys running the place and would have gone out with them their prices better than the hotel. Due to rough surf in Playa we got a cab for 30.00 each way and went down to Akumal for a snorkeling park there. It was just ok but crowded with locals on the weekend. On the way home from Akumal we stopped into Puerto Adventura. We were really impressed with this area. There are smaller hotels and the beachs are much less rough. There are fun restaurants and bars being a port for boaters. And there are dolphin/ seal parks that are beautiful right in the town, you can swim with the dolphins. I would consider this area next time. Great for families or Singles. Ok as for the Riu restaurants everyone avoided the Brazilian because it was too much meat. The rest were very nice with attentive service and nice atmosphere. We were suprised that the buffet was as good as it was so don't stress if you don't get all the reservations you want. The shows at night were pretty good. Don't miss the Michael Jackson show. I don't like Michael but everyone loved the show. The sports bar leaves a lot to be desired with poor lighting. But it is a place to go after midnight. There is little activity after midnight and unfortunately the disco in the other Riu is pretty bad unless you are under 30. The Riu Palace needs a night spot. MAKE SURE to sign up for the Riu resorts frequent user card at the front desk. You will immediately be able to get a 10% discount on tours and the spa. But you must tell the spa ahead of time that you want your discount. The massage therapists were very good too. The advantage of this hotel is location. You can walk into Playa del Carmen in about 20 min or take a 5.00 cab ride. Its fun to visit the shops and bars with the old/new mexico flavor. Lots of fun at night for the younger people but great for us too. ALWAYS ask the front desk for suggestions. We wanted to go to a bar in Playa that would be better for our age group. We ended up having a ball in a bar with a 10 piece band playing salsa thanks to the front desk staff. The cab drivers are pretty good and if you know the rates they will not rip you off just pay them what they are listed to get from the book in the hotel. ALSO you can hire a driver for the day just at the entrance to the hotel. We met Rodrigo for our Akumal trip. He told us for 125.00 he would spend 8 hours with us taking us to Tulum, Akumal, etc for the day. Chitizentzan(?) is more because its so far. But if you want to get out and plan your own trip look for Rodrigo he mostly parks at the Riu. The rooms are not as upscale as I would have thought for such a new hotel. As 2 single women the beds are close together but not bad. Most of all we had a great time meeting so many people, mostly couples or newly weds. But that was not a problem, people of all ages come together here in fun and you will be invited to join in on the fun. This hotel although not perfect is a great vacation for the price mostly due to the staff who really puts a smile on your face and the location.

We just returned from a vacation at the RIU Palace Riviera Maya and had a wonderful time. We were there from May 9 - 13. This was my first trip to Mexico and I spent a lot of time researching and reading hundreds of reviews about the resorts in both Cancun and Riviera Maya. I feel that my research paid off and chose a great resort. Even though this was my first trip to Mexico, I have vacationed in the Bahamas, Aruba and the US Virgin Islands.

I have to agree with many other reviews about how outstanding the staff was at this resort. They work so hard and provide excellent customer service. The staff was very friendly and responded very quickly if we needed anything. From the reviews, I knew the beds would be firm and I asked for the foam mattress pad upon arrival and they immediately brought them to our room. That evening they called twice to make sure that everything was ok and to see if we needed anything else. Our hotel room was very clean and our mini-fridge was alway stocked.

The resort was beautiful and they were constantly cleaning and keeping up the grounds. The pool was very nice and we enjoyed the swim up bar. We never had problems get chairs by the pool or beach. The beach area was nice, especially they upper area that they created.

I am a very picky eater and I found the food to be very good and there was a lot of variety at the buffet. We ate one evening at Chili's steak house and it was very good. We did not have any problems getting reservations for any of the restaurants.

Overall, we had a terrific vacation and we would definately go back to this hotel. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about this resort.

We just returned from a week’s stay at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya. Unfortunately, our stay definitely did not warrant more than an average rating. Warning: this is a long and detailed review!!

Service
The service was very sporadic. At times, it was excellent and immediate, whereas many other times it was nonexistent. For example, I called to ask for a room service menu because we did not have one in our room, but we never received it. We requested a wake-up call one morning before a day trip – and never received it. Thankfully we had set our alarm. One evening our toilet would not flush, so we called around 5:30pm and asked that they come fix it. When we returned to our room after 10pm, it had not been fixed. I called again and said that someone needed to come immediately, which they did. However, my husband had to fix it twice more over the next couple of days. These are just a few of the examples.

Dining
Overall, we were extremely unimpressed with the food. For breakfast and lunch, only one restaurant is open and it is buffet style. For dinner, you may either make reservations at one of the specialty restaurants or eat in the main dining room (where breakfast is), which is buffet style. As far as the buffets were concerned, I felt this food was barely better than cafeteria food. There are a few exceptions – like fresh fruit or the hot, chocolate fondue with homemade marshmallows – but overall, it was not very good at all. We had dinner at all of the specialty restaurants except for one, Chili’s, and that was because we just weren’t interested – the menu didn’t look too appealing and it’s also where you had to eat lunch every day.
The Japanese restaurant was decent. Sir Oliver’s was the best, though still not spectacular. This is sort of an Asian-Fusion - not French. The Brazilian restaurant was pretty weak, especially if you’ve ever been to a real Brazilian steakhouse like Fogo de Chao! The “salad bar” was merely the same thing that’s at the buffet every day – lettuce, a few veggies, and mystery salad dressings. Same at the Mexican restaurant, which was not good at all.

Beach
The beach, while certainly not earning any awards for “Best Beaches,” was not as bad as it was made out to be. You can walk a decent length down the beach to the south, past many resorts until you reach a completely empty area. However, walking the beach is not for everyone – the sandbags, pipes, tubes, jet skis, etc create quite the obstacle course. In addition to the sandbags, there are these pipes/tubes that pull in water from the sea and empty onto the beach. You will be asked every five minutes if you would like to jet ski or para-sail, and the equipment sits along the shoreline for you to walk around. (If you are just lying on your beach chair and pretend to either be asleep or involved in a book, they usually leave you alone.) Also, there is an issue with the kelp, though it seemed to only be an issue at this particular resort. Every morning, workers would be out on the beach and dig these massive holes, then rake up the kelp and put it in the holes and cover it back up. The effort was appreciated, but it didn’t smell very good if you got too close!

Pool
The pool is nice, but there is music playing ALL day long. If you like to relax in the quiet until happy hour rolls around, you will have to go down to the beach. The pool gets very busy in the afternoon and you can usually only find chairs in the shade along the outside edge. “Sexy Bingo” is every afternoon, along with other activities like rifle shooting, futball (soccer), etc. Shania Twain’s “I feel like a woman” got a little old after it was played for the 50th time during “Sexy Bingo.” The pool closes at 8pm every night to be cleaned and treated. Based on the size of the hotel, we were surprised there was only one pool.

Excursions
We had booked our trip through our travel agent and there was a company, Olympus Tours, which had two representatives on site every day. We ended up booking our one-day trip through them, even though it was $60 more to do so instead of booking it online before we left – try googling cancun-discounts or entertainment-plus. You do, however, have to be careful with many companies offering reduced price or free tours, because they are trying to sell timeshares. Our trip was to Tulum and then to Xel-Ha. Tulum was great. Xel-Ha was fun, but be warned that the snorkeling is practically non-existent and the water is very murky.

We also took a cab ($5) to 5th Avenue in downtown Playa del Carmen. (This is also where you can catch a ferry to Cozumel if you like.) We had a good time, but don’t expect to get any really good deals – we (nor anyone around us) seemed to really be able to negotiate and haggle like we thought we would be able to do. Plenty of tequila to taste and bring home if you like!

Overall…
We had a good time – after all, it is vacation and the weather was beautiful. However, we will not be returning. At one point I made the comment that it was like seeing the previews for a movie, and then watching the movie – but all the good parts were in the preview. Even though it housed 400 rooms, the resort grounds were not very extensive – it is literally what is within the U-shape of the hotel. The food was not good.

The noise level was very loud, and it was impossible to sleep through the night – we could hear every person that came in after us and got up before us, as well as cleaning and room service carts. When we arrived, our first room (2069) was above the music club, which is open until midnight, and was SO loud. We requested to move, and they told us they were booked to capacity (thought they definitely were not.) Then they moved us to a different room (1053) the next day. The floors on the top level are definitely the best as they offer the best views, and even if you get a “garden view” room, if you are on the top level you most likely will be able to see the ocean as well.

The beaches in Playa del Carmen are not very good either – and this resort had one of the better ones. This was our first time to Mexico, so this may be mainly due to the hurricane damage suffered several years ago. Either way, we will not be returning anytime soon.

This was our 25th wedding anniversary trip. I was apprehensive having never left the country before but to my surprise it was the best vacation we have ever had. We got to the Riu Palace and were treated like royalty as soon as we hit the lobby. We had no problem communicating with the desk. As soon as we checked in we were taken to our room where I was stunned with the marble flooring, shower and tub. The refridgerator was full bottled water, assorted sodas and a 6 pack of Corona. The mini bar had 4 fifths of liquor , tequella, vodka, rum and brandy. The pool was beautiful, complete with swim up bar. Plenty of chairs for everyone and the waitstaff was great. The beach was amazing. Plenty of palm tress for shade and lots of space without trees for the sun worshipers and some hammocks too for the hubby. Beach service was great with no shortage of drinks being served. Very rarely had to ask for a refill. The buffet was there every day with wonderful food of all kinds. Out of the 5 seated resturants there were we at at 4. My favorite was the brazilian. You actually had to turn food away and the flavor was amazing. The shows in the courtyard in the evenings was a lot of fun and the show inside was like a vegas production only smaller. Playa is within walking distance, about 15 - 20 minute walk. If you need there are plenty of cabs - costs about 6 bucks american. I recomend the hot tub after a long day. It was soo relaxing after charter fishing ( where I caught a 43 inch king mackrel). No matter where you go or what you do there is someone always there to help. Tipping is not required but with the treatment we recieved we could'nt not tip. We are already making plans for our next trip. I recommend this wonderful place to everyone.
