My husband and I stayed at this hotel for our honeymoon (two weeks) To cut a long story short....We arrived and were not on the register, we were downgraded to a smaller room. Later in the day we were moved into the room we had paid for...on departure they said it was our fault (even though we booked with first choice) Thay wanted us to pay an extra £250!! The rep at the hotel was rude and unhelpfull. Food was good. Beach was so bad you couldnt go in it for all the crap (dont be fooled when they tell you they have 'cleaned' it up)!!!Rooms are lovely and very clean although we had to wait three days for the loo to be unblocked! Hotel trips are ok but when you arrive at your destination they charge you 'Insurance' (£20-30) if you dont pay all hell breaks loose! I would go to Mexico again but NOT WITH FIRST CHOICE AND NOT THIS HOTEL. Please be warned, I would hate your holiday to be as bad as ours, it was our honeymoon and we both ended up in tears...

This resort left something to be desired. From the poor service and food quality to the dirty public space, I was not impressed. My friend and I stayed at here because her company took everyone on a trip for making their budget in 2007...so it was free. That being said, I feel bad for the guests who paid hard earned $$ out of their pocket to stay. There are so many places in Playa which are much more desirable with great service that chosing Blue Bay is silly.

The rooms are nice and large with beautiful views and spacious patios. Be prepared for housekeeping to be non-existent. The TV, safe and AC were broken and not repaired, even after numerous requests to the front desk, for the duration of our stay.

The adjacent beach is very rocky and full of seaweed, but you can walk about 5 minutes and enjoy the resort next door's beach very easily. The cocktails were totally watered down, all the bars close VERY early and, besides taking a taxi into playa for nightlife, the resort pretty much shuts down around 10pm...boring!

If you are planning a trip to Playa, stay in town, NOT at one of these resorts, you will be glad you did!

“Mosquito breeding ground”

Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda

8 May 2008
1/11 found this review helpful

Bad:

- Mosquitos are everywhere, breeding in the stagnant pools within the property. Staff leave the room doors open while they enter, letting all the mosquitos in, hence expect to be bitten at least 5 times per night.

- Ocean water only knee high for as far as you can walk, and full of seaweed. Beach doesn't have enough cabanas for shade.

- Restaurants (French/Italian) are fully booked when only 1/8 full, however if you beg for entry the food is good.

Good:

- Modern (if badly designed - lots of walking - too much jungle) resort.

Would never go back.

The resort and rooms were beautiful. The beds were very comfortable. We had difficulty getting the golf cart transportation to various locations on the resort and its very spread out. We had a child and an adult with physical disabilities. If you don't make reservations the day before at the better restaurants you won't get a reservation which leaves eating at the buffets which aren't very good except the brkft buffet. The room service food was tastey and fairly quick. Loved the ocean side bar. The staff there was fun and the drinks were yummy and strong. The beach is ok but venturing out into the water was a nightmare on our feet with tree stumps, rocks, etc. As in other parts of Mexico, certain areas had a sewage aroma. This one is near the brkft buffet. I guess since the price is better than some of the other all inclusives we checked out you could put up with the anoyances. It might be cheaper but it certainly isn't cheap. Next time I'm checking out the Moon Palace per recommendation of several friends.

We spent 2 weeks at Blue Bay from 11th to the 25th of April and had a fantastic time.
Like some others, we had read various dodgy reviews before we went and must admit we went away with more than a little trepidation.
However, our worries were completely unjustified: ok, the sea was a strange colour - big deal and if you are not into karaoke the night life won't enthral you.
That said, if you can't enjoy yourself here then I think you should really just stay at home.

The staff are excellent, very friendly and are only too willing to help with anything. The place is ultra clean and hygiene is a top priority especially in food areas.
The food is superb, even the pickiest eater could not complain at the choice. For dinner, the buffet restaurant has a tremendous choice and there is a different theme every night
There are several a la carte restaurants including steak house, seafood, French, Italian and Mexican which you book a day in advance with your concierge who is situated at the front desk of your accommodation block. We always managed to book 8:30 reservations without a problem.

Every day the animation team have many activities e.g., water polo, volleyball, football, water aerobics and salsa lessons, late afternoon there was always a quiz, bingo then Spanish lessons.

The beach has fine white sand with plenty of sunbeds but not many umbrellas, the sea is a little disappointing due to the amount of seaweed but the hotel staff try their best to rake up the seaweed and remove it.

There is a free internet café in the reception area with 8 pc’s. Although this was very popular, we never had to wait long to get access to a machine.

This has been our 5th time in the Caribbean and it has been the first time none of the family have been ill with bad stomachs for even a singe day.

One of the other highlights of our visit was the wildlife (this does not include the under 21’s from Canada). Within the hotel grounds there are a number of White-Nosed Coati-Mundi (racoon type animals) as well as numerous iguanas. There is a also a great variety of birdlife including a flock of brown pelicans that fly along the coast a number of times each day.

We met lots of friendly people and would say hi to all at Jaime’s beach bar especially Mike and Gilda from Birmingham and Adele from Canada, the best stand-in bartender Blue Bay has ever seen.
